Members of The Glen Golf Club in North Berwick voted 273 to 221 against taking negotiations with The Ancient Links Golf Company (TALGC) further, according to The Golf Business on October 2, 2026. The motion would have allowed continued talks and due diligence; it did not ask members to approve a completed deal.
What The Glen members decided
The Special General Meeting rejected a motion to continue negotiations with TALGC. The Golf Business reported the vote as 273 against and 221 in favour. The publication said the outcome was understood to draw a line under The Glen’s association with TALGC.
The reported proposal was an investment package worth around £8 million, according to The Golf Business. That is the publication’s approximate valuation; an offer document independently confirming the figure is not available here.

Why members disagreed
Concerns raised by opponents
Opponents argued that The Glen did not need the investment and questioned whether investors might eventually seek a return in ways that affected club operations. They raised the possibility of fewer tee times available to members if more capacity went to golf tourists, as well as higher visitor fees. These were concerns about potential effects, not established terms of an agreement or changes that followed the vote.

Arguments made by supporters
Supporters organized as The Silenced of the Glen accused opponents of creating divisions and intimidating members. They also argued that opponents had criticized TALGC without fully investigating its impact at clubs where it had already made deals. Those claims are the group’s allegations and arguments, not independently established findings.
A strained club atmosphere
The Golf Business reported that the dispute had become so divisive that members from opposing sides were said to be unable to sit together in the clubhouse.

What the vote means for tee times and visitor fees
The vote did not approve an agreement, and the reported concerns about member access and visitor pricing should not be read as confirmed future changes. The Golf Business report does not set out a detailed contract, financial model or proposed governance terms that would establish how those matters might have been handled. The motion would have enabled more negotiations and due diligence; members voted against that next step.

Jonathan Brown, managing secretary at The Glen, told The Golf Business: “This is an internal matter for the club and its members and should not be a debate or conversation for the wider public.” A member of Friends of the Glen said: “Hopefully this will bring an end to this distraction and allow the members to plan for a future controlled by them.” The publication said TALGC had been approached for comment but had not responded by the time of publication.

How the vote fits TALGC’s other Scottish activity
The Golf Business reported investment partnership deals involving TALGC at Scotscraig and Forfar, and separate 99-year takeover proposals for Montrose Golf Links. Angus Council was consulting the public on the Montrose proposals because the links include a Common Good asset intended to benefit the community. That consultation is separate from The Glen’s member vote.
The report also described work at the partner clubs: restoration of Forfar’s 15th hole to its original architectural intent and a clubhouse transformation at Scotscraig that included a reported £1 million kitchen upgrade. Those examples concern other clubs and do not establish what TALGC would have done at The Glen.
