The transistor’s case for being the greatest discovery of the last 100 years rests on what it made possible: reliable solid-state amplification and switching became foundations for radios, telephones, computers, integrated circuits and digital systems. The first working point-contact transistor was demonstrated at Bell Telephone Laboratories in December 1947. No authoritative ranking proves it was the single greatest discovery, but its breadth of influence makes it a compelling candidate.
When was the first transistor made?
The first working point-contact transistor was built at Bell Telephone Laboratories in December 1947. On December 23, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain presented the working solid-state amplifier to Bell Labs colleagues and managers, according to the American Physical Society. That date marks the laboratory breakthrough; it was not the date the transistor became a mass-market component.
The device used a germanium crystal and closely spaced metal contacts. It demonstrated that a semiconductor could amplify an electrical signal, a result that opened a new path for electronics beyond vacuum tubes.

Who invented the transistor?
John Bardeen and Walter Brattain built and demonstrated the first working point-contact transistor. William Shockley led the wider semiconductor research effort at Bell Labs and subsequently developed the junction-transistor design, which became central to practical transistor development. It is more accurate to describe the invention as the result of this shared research effort than to credit only one person.

Bardeen, Brattain and Shockley jointly received the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics. The Nobel citation recognized them “for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect.” The award came nine years after the first working device.
What did the first transistor do?

- Switching: it could control whether current flowed, a basic operation behind electronic logic.
The U.S. Department of State describes the 1947 point-contact transistor as “a semiconductor device that amplifies sound and switches electrical currents.” These functions mattered in communications equipment, where vacuum tubes had been used to amplify signals. Solid-state operation offered a route to electronics that could be smaller, more reliable and lower in power use than tube-based systems.

The transistor’s historical importance comes from its role as an enabling component: it could amplify or switch signals in a compact solid-state form. Those basic operations are needed across many kinds of electronic equipment, allowing the device to serve as a building block rather than a tool for just one application.

- Radios and telephones: transistors could handle signal amplification and switching in communications devices.
- Computers: switching made transistors useful for the electronic logic on which computers depend.
- Integrated circuits: transistor technology became part of the basis for combining many electronic components in circuits.
- Digital systems: transistor switching underlies the operations performed by later digital electronics.
These links describe historical influence, not a single measured statistic assigning every later technological change to the transistor alone. Bell Labs also helped the invention spread beyond its originating laboratory by licensing the technology, supporting its wider development and use.
Is the transistor really the single greatest discovery of the last 100 years?
There is no authoritative, universal ranking that establishes one discovery as objectively greatest. The claim is best treated as an argument about impact, not a settled fact. The transistor has a strong case when judged by five criteria:

The internet, antibiotics, nuclear power and the integrated circuit are also plausible candidates for major discoveries or technological turning points. Comparing them fairly would require applying the same criteria to each, including whether it enabled other technologies, how widely its effects spread and how strong the evidence for its impact is. The available historical record supports calling the transistor a leading candidate; it does not prove it outranks every alternative.
Why the transistor’s genesis still matters
The December 1947 breakthrough joined a scientific finding to a practical electronic function: a semiconductor could amplify and switch signals. Bardeen and Brattain produced the first working point-contact device; Shockley’s research leadership and later junction-transistor design helped carry the work forward. The transistor’s subsequent reach explains why its origin is often treated as a turning point in modern electronics, while the claim that it was the single greatest discovery remains a judgment rather than a measurable fact.
