AI is changing mobile gaming first behind the scenes: developers use it to help with tasks such as playtesting, localization and code generation, while studios are also exploring player-facing dialogue, coaching and game tips. Some examples are production tools or demonstrations, not proof that AI-generated characters or levels are already standard across mobile games.
How is AI changing mobile games?
There are two distinct tracks. AI can support the teams that build and operate games, often without players seeing it. It can also become part of the game experience, generating dialogue or offering context-aware help. The first track has survey evidence of broad use among game developers; the player-facing examples currently cited here are demos and a dated platform rollout.
A 2025 Google Cloud and The Harris Poll survey of 615 game developers in the United States, South Korea, Norway, Finland and Sweden, conducted in late June and early July, found that 90% were already using AI in their work. That is a finding about surveyed game developers across several markets—not an estimate of adoption among mobile studios specifically.
How does AI help game developers?
Developers report using AI for repetitive or time-consuming work as well as creative support. In the same 2025 Google Cloud and The Harris Poll survey, 47% said AI was speeding up playtesting and balancing mechanics, 45% said it was assisting localization and translation, and 44% said it was improving code generation and scripting support. These results describe respondents’ reported uses; they do not show how often each use appears in mobile games.

Candy Crush shows how AI can assist level production
The Associated Press reported in May 2025 that King uses AI to help create new Candy Crush Saga levels and revisit older ones. The game had more than 18,700 levels at the time of that report. That scale helps explain the appeal of production assistance, but it does not mean a model independently designs the game or replaces the level team. Candy Crush franchise general manager Todd Green described the aim as using AI on existing problems “to make the work of the teams faster or more accurate, and more accurate more quickly.”
Will AI make mobile game characters more realistic?
AI can make a character’s responses more flexible, but that is not the same as making the character more believable in every respect. Google’s May 2025 developer article describes Gemma Journey, a sample in which players question non-player characters (NPCs) whose dialogue is generated in real time using a designed character persona and a game prompt. The example demonstrates a way to vary dialogue while steering it with authored context; it is not evidence that mobile games broadly ship open-ended AI characters.

- 7-Color RGB Light Ring & 600mAh Battery: The mobile game controller features a 7-color adjustable light ring on the joystick(ABXY button lights can be turned off, but their colors are not adjustable). The lighting is vibrant yet eye-friendly. The built-in 600mAh battery provides up to 6 hours of battery life in brightness mode — enough for a full day of gaming
Generated conversation also changes the design problem. A studio needs to decide what a character knows, how it should sound, what subjects it can address and how to handle responses outside the intended experience. A persona and prompt provide direction, but they should not be treated as a substitute for safeguards.
Are mobile games using AI to create levels?
There is a reported commercial example, but the important distinction is assistance versus autonomy. AP’s Candy Crush report says AI helps King create levels and revisit older ones. The description supports AI as part of a production workflow; it does not establish that AI creates complete levels without human review, or that the same workflow is common across mobile games.

For players, AI-assisted production may be invisible. Its value is whether the finished level is enjoyable, fair and well tested—not whether a model contributed to a draft. The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison of AI-assisted levels with conventionally produced levels.
What player-facing AI features are emerging?
Coaching during play
Google’s May 2025 developer article describes a mobile baseball coaching demonstration hosted on Google Cloud and powered by Gemini 2.0 Flash. It illustrates how a game could offer real-time advice, but it is a vendor-described demo rather than independent evidence of a feature deployed widely in commercial mobile games.

Tips and game progress in an overlay
In a March 11, 2026 Android Developers post, Google described Play Games Sidekick as an in-game overlay for rewards, achievements and quest progress, with AI-generated Game Tips. Google said it had debuted in over 90 games at the time of that post. That figure is a dated rollout statement, not a guarantee of the current number of games or availability in every region or title.

The location of inference—the processing that produces a model’s response—shapes a feature’s technical design. Google’s developer materials describe both an on-device example and cloud-hosted demonstrations. The available examples do not establish that either approach is universally faster, cheaper, more private or better for mobile games.

| Approach | Example in Google’s developer materials | What it means for a game team |
|---|---|---|
| On-device | Gemma 3 is described as an open model family spanning 1B to 27B parameters; Google also describes a Unity plugin built on Gemma.cpp. | Inference can happen on the player’s device. The cited material illustrates a local approach, but gives no production comparison for battery use, latency, cost, privacy or model quality. |
| Cloud-hosted | The mobile baseball coaching demo uses Gemini 2.0 Flash and is hosted on Google Cloud. Google also points to Vertex AI and Google Kubernetes Engine for live-service AI. | Model processing is hosted in the cloud. The cited material does not quantify network requirements, operating costs, response times or moderation workload for a shipped mobile game. |
These are examples of available approaches, not a head-to-head benchmark. A team would need to evaluate the demands of its particular feature, devices, connectivity assumptions and safeguards before choosing an architecture.
What are the risks and responsibilities?
Adoption does not mean developers have settled questions about control of data or player trust. In the 2025 Google Cloud and The Harris Poll survey, 63% of respondents expressed concern about data ownership and 35% about player data privacy. Those are developer-reported concerns, not evidence of a particular breach, studio practice or legal finding.
Generated content also brings platform-policy obligations. Google Play’s AI-generated content policy makes developers responsible for preventing prohibited output from generative AI apps, including offensive content, content that may exploit or abuse children, and content that could deceive users or enable dishonest behavior. A game using generation needs controls suited to its feature and a review against the current policy before release; the policy does not prescribe one universal technical solution.

What the next stage is likely to look like
The examples point toward AI being added to specific parts of mobile-game production and play, rather than replacing the whole process. For development teams, that can mean assistance with a first pass on content, testing or code. For players, it can mean a contextual hint, coaching response or dialogue that is less fixed than a conventional script.
What remains uncertain is how widely these features will be adopted, whether players will prefer them, and how on-device and cloud systems compare in real production conditions. The available examples show plausible directions, not a reliable measure of prevalence or a prediction that every mobile game will use generative AI.
