The first theatrical film adapted from a Michael Crichton novel was The Andromeda Strain, Robert Wise’s 1971 science-fiction film based on Crichton’s 1969 novel of the same name. It was rated G, and its story follows scientists investigating a deadly crisis after a satellite crashes near Piedmont, New Mexico.

What is the first movie based on a Michael Crichton novel?

The Andromeda Strain is the film. Robert Wise directed it, and Nelson Gidding wrote the screenplay. The American Film Institute (AFI) identifies the source as Crichton’s 1969 novel and records the movie’s release in March 1971.

AFI describes the book as the first novel Crichton published under his own name. That wording matters: it does not establish that it was the first book he wrote. The film is therefore best described as the first film adaptation of a Crichton novel, rather than making a broader claim about his writing career.

Was The Andromeda Strain rated G?

Yes. AFI records an MPAA G rating, and Universal Pictures’ current home page also labels the film G-rated. The rating is a historical classification for this film; it does not mean the story lacks tense or disturbing science-fiction material.

What happens in the film?

A satellite comes down near the fictional town of Piedmont, New Mexico. A scientific team investigates the disaster and the deadly biological threat associated with it. The film builds its suspense around a methodical inquiry into an unfamiliar crisis rather than a conventional action-hero plot.

The Library of Congress’s Now See Hear! post says the film emphasizes the novel’s clinical, fact-like style, “striving to present fiction as fact” while exploring the idea that technology cannot be trusted. That approach helps explain why the story’s procedural detail is central to its atmosphere.

How did the film adapt Crichton’s novel?

The film retains the novel’s central premise, but it is not a scene-for-scene reproduction. AFI’s account of a modern interview with Wise describes one specific change: the adaptation made one of the novel’s all-male scientists a woman. Screenwriter Gidding suggested the change; Wise initially resisted and later agreed.

Crichton also appears briefly in the film as a surgeon, according to AFI and his official website. AFI records Academy Award nominations for art direction and film editing, reflecting the production’s attention to the scientific setting and visual presentation.

When was it released, and how long is it?

AFI records a March 21, 1971 New York world premiere and a March 30 Los Angeles opening. Runtime listings are less consistent: AFI notes that copyright records give 121 minutes, while contemporary reviews cited in its entry report 127, 130, or 131 minutes. A runtime should therefore be tied to its source or edition rather than presented as a single undisputed figure.
