If motion on your Google TV looks uneven or juddery, enable Match Content Frame Rate. The option allows the streaming device to switch its output to the frame rate used by the video instead of forcing every title through one fixed rate. On Google TV hardware, it is found in the advanced display settings, although the exact menu path and wording vary by device, television, firmware and HDMI connection.

What Match Content Frame Rate does

A streaming box must decide how to send video to your television. With a fixed output rate, the box continually presents content at one selected rate even when the source was mastered differently. That conversion can make camera pans, scrolling credits and other movement appear to jump or pulse.

When Match Content Frame Rate is enabled, Google TV can change its output to follow the source video’s frame rate during playback. The television may briefly resynchronise when a title starts, but motion should be more consistent when the source and output are aligned.

Brian Burgess described the reason for making the change in XDA Developers on October 14, 2026: “The Match Content Frame Rate setting lets my Google TV device match video frame rates instead of outputting a fixed rate.”

Where to find the setting

Google TV does not expose an identical menu on every product. Look under the device’s display, picture or resolution controls, then open an area labelled Advanced display settings (or a very similar term). Select Match Content Frame Rate and turn it on.

  1. Open Settings from the Google TV home screen.
  2. Enter the section for Display, Display & Sound, or resolution and picture output.
  3. Open Advanced display settings.
  4. Choose Match Content Frame Rate and enable it.
  5. Play a title with noticeable camera movement and check whether pans and scrolling text look steadier.

If you cannot see the option, do not assume it has been removed. Its availability can depend on the Google TV model, connected television, firmware version and the HDMI equipment between them. A Google TV Streamer 4K and a television from another manufacturer may therefore show different labels or choices.

Why Google TV can still look juddery

The source and output do not match

Frame-rate matching addresses the most direct cause: content being converted to a fixed output rate. It cannot correct judder that is already present in a stream, a television’s own motion processing, or a poorly handled HDMI handshake.

The television is using the wrong display mode

Resolution and refresh-rate choices remain important. A device can match content while still sending an unsuitable resolution or refresh rate for the television. Check the display menu after enabling the setting and confirm that the selected mode is one your television and HDMI input support.

Region and programme standards differ

Practical troubleshooting reports for Chromecast with Google TV often point to trying 50 Hz or 60 Hz when movement jumps or a particular mode is unavailable. Neither is a universal winner: the better choice depends on the content, television and regional video standards. Change one setting at a time and test the same scene so you can identify the effect.

What to check when 4K or HDR disappears

Motion problems and missing high-quality output can share an HDMI cause. Work through these checks before replacing hardware:

Symptom Check What it can affect
4K option is missing Confirm the selected resolution, HDMI input capability and the receiver or switch in the signal path. Available resolution modes
HDR does not appear Review dynamic-range matching and the television input’s enhanced or advanced HDMI mode. HDR detection and playback
Colours look wrong Inspect the colour-format setting and compare it with the television’s supported formats. Colour reproduction and compatibility
Motion jumps after a mode change Test 50 Hz and 60 Hz separately, then retest with Match Content Frame Rate enabled. Motion consistency

These checks come from user troubleshooting discussions rather than controlled laboratory testing, so they are possibilities, not guaranteed fixes. A certified high-speed HDMI cable can help when the cable or HDMI mode cannot carry the selected 4K or HDR signal, but a new cable will not solve every frame-rate or motion problem.

A sensible setup order

  1. Enable Match Content Frame Rate in advanced display settings.
  2. Set a resolution your television and the entire HDMI chain support.
  3. Turn on the television input’s enhanced or advanced HDMI mode if required for 4K or HDR.
  4. Review dynamic-range matching and colour format.
  5. If motion or compatibility is still wrong, test 50 Hz and 60 Hz independently.
  6. Retest the same programme after each change, and return to the previous value if the change makes the result worse.

What this setting will—and will not—fix

  • It can help: uneven pans and judder caused by forcing content through one fixed output frame rate.
  • It may expose: a short HDMI resynchronisation when playback switches modes.
  • It cannot guarantee: perfect motion from every app, stream or television.
  • It does not automatically provide: 4K or HDR when the television, HDMI input, cable or intermediate equipment does not support the required mode.

Start with the free setting change. Only consider a cable or other hardware change after checking the display, HDMI and matching controls, because the underlying cause may be a mode or compatibility setting rather than the cable itself.
