Gen Z’s money apps do different jobs: bank apps handle everyday accounts, peer-to-peer (P2P) apps move money between people, budgeting and savings tools help organize cash, investing apps provide access to investments, and buy now, pay later (BNPL) services split purchases into installments. There is no reliable current ranking in the available evidence showing which individual fintech app is most used by Gen Z.

For a U.S.-focused view, YouGov reports that 66% of its Gen Z respondents used a bank’s mobile app for transactions in 2025. The figures below describe survey responses and product examples—not a definitive list of the most popular apps.

What the available surveys say about Gen Z and money apps

YouGov’s 2025 article reports that 78% of its Gen Z respondents had one bank account and 66% used a bank’s mobile app for transactions. Its other reported banking channels were internet banking (46%), ATMs (42%), in-person branches (35%), phone interactions (14%), third-party apps (9%), and live chat (5%). Respondents could use more than one channel. YouGov’s displayed findings do not provide full field dates or sample size, so these figures should be read as survey results, not a census of every Gen Z consumer. YouGov’s findings

The same article says 24% of respondents had no budget and 12% often overspent despite budgeting. The most frequently named financial goal was an emergency fund (32%), followed by a major purchase such as a car or appliance (25%), debt repayment (21%), a vacation (20%), home buying (19%), and retirement (13%). These results help explain why money-management apps can serve several distinct needs; they do not show that any one app meets them all.

Some other published figures come from companies that sell financial products. Cash App says The Harris Poll surveyed 2,080 U.S. adults online on its behalf from September 25–29, 2025, including 319 respondents ages 18–28 identified as Gen Z. In that survey, 77% of Gen Z respondents said earning interest would motivate them to save more. Among respondents with a savings account, 46% reported having less than $500 saved, and 44% knew their account’s interest rate. The release also reports interest in stock-market investing (68%) and cryptocurrency investing (55%). These are reported attitudes and self-reported savings, not verified balances or proof of investment activity. Cash App’s survey and product announcement

Acorns reports that 39% of Gen Z respondents named lack of savings as a financial concern. Its 2025 survey was conducted by Opinium Research for Acorns from September 5–26 among 5,000 U.S. adults ages 18 and older; the page separately describes a survey of 2,494 Acorns customers. These are Acorns-commissioned findings, and the two samples should not be conflated. Acorns’ 2025 Money Matters Report

App category Examples supported by sources What to compare
Mobile banking A bank’s mobile app; Cash App describes banking services provided through partner banks Eligibility, account terms, fees, deposit protections, customer support, cash access, and whether the provider is a bank or a financial-services platform
P2P payments PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle Who you need to pay, transfer limits and timing, funding source, dispute options, privacy settings, and safeguards against paying the wrong person
Budgeting and saving Budgeting tools as a category; Cash App savings goals Manual or automated tracking, goal setup, linked accounts, fees, access to funds, and data permissions
Investing Acorns Round-Ups and retirement and family accounts; Cash App describes stock and bitcoin investing Account type, fees, investment choices, risk, automation, eligibility, and whether investing suits your time horizon
BNPL or installment payments Afterpay Payment schedule, late-payment consequences, total cost, returns and refunds, and whether installments fit a realistic budget

Bank apps for everyday account access

A bank app is typically the place to check balances and manage transactions on an existing account. Compare the account terms behind the app—not only its interface. Confirm whether the provider is a bank, how deposits are protected, what fees apply, how you can reach support, and how to access cash if needed. Cash App says its banking services are provided by partner banks and that Cash App itself is a financial-services platform, not a bank. Its announcement names Sutton Bank as the card issuer; those details describe the stated arrangement in that release and should not be assumed to cover every feature or future account terms. Cash App’s announcement

P2P apps to send money to other people

The Federal Reserve defines P2P services as tools that electronically transfer money between consumers, often through a mobile app. Its 2025 household banking report names PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle as survey examples. That establishes them as examples of the category, not as a ranking of Gen Z usage. Federal Reserve household banking report

Before sending money, check that the recipient is correct and review the app’s transfer timing, limits, funding source, privacy options, and dispute process. Do not assume that a payment can be reversed simply because the app is familiar; understand the service’s protections before using it for an unfamiliar recipient or purchase.

Budgeting and savings tools for goals and cash flow

A budgeting tool may help track spending, while a savings feature can help set aside money for a goal. YouGov’s finding that 24% of its respondents had no budget points to a need some people may want to address, but it does not show a preference for apps over other methods. A notebook or spreadsheet can also support a budget; choose a method you will keep using.

When comparing digital tools, consider whether transactions must be entered manually or can be tracked automatically, how goals are set up, whether accounts are connected, and whether fees or withdrawal restrictions apply. If a tool requests account access, understand what data it can see and how to revoke permission.

Investing apps for long-term goals

Acorns describes several product categories: Round-Ups that invest spare change, Acorns Later retirement investing, Acorns Early investment accounts for children, a checking account and debit card, shopping rewards, and financial education. These are the company’s descriptions, not an independent assessment of fees, suitability, investment performance, or adoption among Gen Z. Acorns’ product descriptions

Cash App’s 2025 release describes stock and bitcoin investing among features available through sponsored teen accounts, with parental controls. The release also says banking services are provided by partner banks and names Sutton Bank as the card issuer. These teen-account details are product claims in the company’s announcement, not a comparison of current eligibility, costs, protections, or investment choices across apps. Cash App’s announcement

Before investing, check the account type, fees, available investments, risks, eligibility, and whether the money can remain invested for your intended time horizon. Round-ups and automated contributions can make investing feel routine, but automation does not remove investment risk or make a product suitable for every goal.

BNPL apps for installment purchases

Cash App Afterpay reported in April 2025 that, in Morning Consult research, 52% of surveyed Gen Z respondents believed BNPL could help them manage finances better than traditional credit, and 55% were open to using BNPL in the future. These are survey findings about perceptions and openness—not evidence that BNPL improves budgeting or financial health. Cash App Afterpay’s release

Before using an installment plan, check every payment date, the consequences of a late or missed payment, the total amount due, and how returns or refunds affect installments. Make sure the scheduled payments fit your budget alongside rent, bills, and other obligations; an installment schedule does not make a purchase affordable by itself.

What to check before connecting accounts or choosing an app

Review data permissions

Deloitte reports that nearly 70% of its surveyed Gen Z and millennial respondents had authorized banks to share data with other providers. Because the figure combines two generations, it is not a Gen Z-only result. Deloitte’s analysis describes consumers using specialized apps for tasks such as budgeting, taxes, and investing. If an app connects to a bank or another account, review the permissions, privacy terms, and process for revoking access. Deloitte’s analysis of connected finance

Compare the terms that affect your money

  • Check fees, eligibility, account terms, deposit protections, and customer-support options for banking services.
  • For payments, verify transfer limits and timing, funding sources, privacy settings, recipient details, and dispute options.
  • For savings and budgeting tools, check account connections, access to funds, fees, and data permissions.
  • For investing, review the account type, investment choices, fees, eligibility, and risk.
  • For BNPL, review payment dates, late-payment consequences, total cost, and returns or refunds.

The sources cited here do not provide a neutral, current side-by-side comparison of app fees, customer service, protections, or ratings. Product examples and survey findings can help identify what to investigate, but current terms must be checked with each provider.
