The film The Fanimatrix appeared online on September 27, 2003; its BitTorrent file was created the next day, September 28. In September 2023, TorrentFreak reported that the torrent was still active, making it a widely reported candidate for the oldest living torrent—not a record verified for all torrents or a confirmation of its status today.

What the 20-year-old torrent shared

The Fanimatrix is a 16-minute New Zealand Matrix fan film, not an official installment in the franchise. Film metadata lists its online release as September 27, 2003. TorrentFreak reports that Sebastian Kai Frost, the production team’s IT specialist, created its torrent on September 28 and ran a tracker on his Linux computer. Hackaday’s anniversary account gives the same torrent date. Film metadata for The Fanimatrix TorrentFreak’s 2023 account Hackaday’s 2023 account

The distinction matters: the film’s online release and the torrent’s creation were separate events, one day apart. The torrent was a way of distributing the fan film, rather than a commercial Matrix release.

Why a small film used BitTorrent

The production was reportedly made for about $800 and completed in nine days, according to 2023 coverage by TorrentFreak and Hackaday. Those figures are reported estimates, not an audited budget or production record. Hosting a video for online viewers could cost more than the filmmakers could readily afford, so Frost looked for a way to distribute it without carrying the full bandwidth burden on a single server.

BitTorrent appealed because people downloading a file can also share pieces of it with others. Frost explained the attraction to TorrentFreak: “It looked promising because it scaled such that the more popular the file became, the more the bandwidth load was shared. It seemed like the perfect solution,” TorrentFreak.

That was the creators’ reason for choosing peer-to-peer distribution, not a guarantee that every torrent is faster, cheaper, or more reliable than centralized hosting. In this case, the approach helped distribute a film whose creators said they could not afford conventional hosting at scale.

How the torrent stayed alive

A torrent depends on participants who have the file and upload it to others. Those uploaders are called seeders. The torrent’s continued availability therefore depended not only on its original creator but also on people who kept sharing it. TorrentFreak reported that the swarm had nearly died several times, and that some people contributed bandwidth after learning how old it was.

In September 2023, TorrentFreak reported more than 100 seeders. That was a count at the time of publication, not a continuing measurement. The coverage describes community participation, but does not establish that the torrent operated without interruption for two decades.

Frost told TorrentFreak: “It’s really heartening seeing the community pull together around this torrent, despite its usually low transfer count, and work together to keep it alive and kicking. It warms my heart on the daily.” TorrentFreak

Is it still the oldest active torrent?

“Oldest active torrent” is a qualified description, not a proven universal record. In its September 2023 report, TorrentFreak called it the oldest active torrent “as far as we know”; Hackaday likewise presented the superlative as a belief. Neither account establishes that no older torrent was active elsewhere.

Those reports confirm activity at the 20-year milestone in 2023, but they do not establish whether the torrent is active in 2026. Its current swarm status and current authorized distribution options are not confirmed by those accounts.
