The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has the ingredients of a Mass Effect-style action RPG: third-person cover combat, companions who help in fights, a crew to lead, and consequential decisions. You do not appear to need prior knowledge of The Expanse to follow its mercenary-and-conspiracy setup. But the game is still in development, and preview impressions of its execution are mixed, so its promise is not yet proof that it can match Mass Effect.

What is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?

Developed and published by Owlcat Games, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a single-player, third-person action RPG set in the universe of The Expanse, the book and television franchise. The game puts you in the role of a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose shore leave on Eros turns into a lockdown and a wider conspiracy. You create a captain with an Earther, Martian, or Belter background and lead a crew through the events that follow. Steam’s game listing describes choices that affect relationships and events.

The setup gives newcomers a clear starting point: a mercenary, a crew, a crisis on Eros, and a conspiracy in the solar system. The official descriptions reviewed do not say that players must read the books or watch the show first. That makes the franchise an optional source of context, not an established prerequisite; the sources also do not make a formal promise about how the game fits into the franchise’s canon.

Why people compare it to Mass Effect

The comparison is about recognizable design elements, not a guarantee of equivalent storytelling or quality. Owlcat and Xbox Wire’s overview point to a mix of action and crew interaction that will sound familiar to players of BioWare’s space RPG series.

#1 Best Overall

  • A crew and relationships: You lead a team, with relationships among the elements the game says players’ choices can affect.
  • Decisions with consequences: Official materials describe mission choices that affect events.

Those are meaningful points of comparison for anyone looking for a new narrative action RPG. They do not establish how much dialogue, role-playing flexibility, companion development, or long-term consequence the finished game will contain. The available material is clearer about the promised combat and crew systems than the depth of the complete story.

What hands-on previews say—and where they differ

Preview reactions offer a more cautious picture than the feature list alone. PC Gamer’s April 22, 2026 hands-on preview found the core combat solid, though not inspiring, and said the mission shown offered limited role-playing context. Reviewer Robin Valentine concluded: “So, too soon to declare the second coming of Mass Effect just yet, but Osiris Reborn is definitely promising.” That is a judgment about an in-development build, not a verdict on the released game.

TechRadar’s October 3, 2026 hands-on preview was more critical after a 90-minute demo, describing the experience as underwhelming and questioning whether its writing, cinematic presentation, and action could meet the standard set by Mass Effect. That reaction belongs to the demo and the reviewer; it is not evidence of a settled consensus.

Together, the previews suggest that the premise and familiar mechanics have potential, while the story and moment-to-moment execution remain points to watch. Because the game is unreleased, neither preview establishes how the final version will play.
