The Emmys will move to Prime Video starting with the 2027 ceremony under a six-year exclusive global streaming agreement. The Television Academy says the stream will be free, and the Associated Press reports that viewers will not need a Prime subscription.

Where can you watch the Emmys in 2027?

The 79th Primetime Emmy Awards, expected in September 2027, will be the first ceremony under the new agreement. Prime Video will be the Emmys’ exclusive global streaming home during the six-year deal, according to the Television Academy’s announcement. The Academy says the stream will be free; the Associated Press reports that a Prime Video subscription will not be required.

The agreement was announced October 6, 2026. The specific 2027 air date and other viewing details may be announced separately.

Do you need Amazon Prime to watch?

No. The Academy says the ceremony will be free to stream on Prime Video, and the AP reports that viewers will not need a Prime subscription. The announcement does not say that viewers must buy a Fire TV device. If your television can access Prime Video through its built-in app or another connected device, you can use that; Amazon’s Fire TV documentation describes accessing Prime Video from the Fire TV home screen and app.

Are the Emmys leaving broadcast TV?

The announced change is a shift in the Emmy Awards’ distribution rights to an exclusive streaming arrangement on Prime Video. It does not establish whether the 2027 ceremony will also have a television simulcast. The Academy and AP announcements do not confirm one, so viewers should not assume either that a broadcast simulcast will happen or that it is definitively ruled out.

The AP reports that the annual Emmy telecast had appeared on a broadcast network since 1955, rotating among ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC for roughly the past three decades. The 2026 ceremony was the last under that rotation. The change to Prime Video begins with the 2027 show.

What the six-year deal does—and does not—tell viewers

The agreement gives the Emmys one continuing streaming home for six years, beginning in 2027. Television Academy chairman Cris Abrego told the AP, “With one partner over six years, we can really learn together and build from year to year together.”

Prime Video head Mike Hopkins told the AP he expects the arrangement to increase viewership over time and attract younger viewers. That is a stated goal, not evidence of an audience increase: the available announcements provide no ratings, audience results, or deal value.

The announced scope is the Emmy Awards. The available announcements do not specify whether every related ceremony, red-carpet program, or other ancillary event is included.
