The “elephant bridge” is best understood as a proposed synthesis, not an established result: Bohmian mechanics, Palmer’s Invariant Set Postulate, and asymptotic safety begin with different mathematical objects and address different problems. A first-principles reconstruction can compare them and argue for a connection, but the connection needs its own derivation and evidence.

What would it mean to rebuild these ideas from first principles?

To rebuild a theory from first principles is to state its starting assumptions, show how its mathematical rules follow, and explain what those rules imply. For a proposed bridge among these three programs, that means more than pointing out that they all concern fundamental physics. The argument would need to identify a shared foundation, derive each framework—or a justified part of it—from that foundation, and make clear where any extra assumptions enter.

The three programs do not start from the same kind of thing. Bohmian mechanics adds particle positions and their motion to the quantum-state description. Palmer’s Invariant Set Postulate proposes a cosmologically defined fractal subset of state space. Asymptotic safety studies how gravitational couplings behave under renormalization-group flow. Their juxtaposition may motivate a synthesis, but resemblance or compatibility is not a derivation.

What is Bohmian mechanics?

Bohmian mechanics supplements the usual quantum-state description with the positions of particles and a law governing how those positions evolve. In the 1995 preprint “Bohmian Mechanics as the Foundation of Quantum Mechanics,” D. Dürr, S. Goldstein, and N. Zanghì describe the move this way: “One need only complete the usual quantum description in what is really the most obvious way: by simply including the positions of the particles of a quantum system as part of the state description of that system, allowing these positions to evolve in the most natural way.”

In this account, particle positions follow trajectories associated with the quantum state. Dürr, Goldstein, and Zanghì argue that the familiar quantum formalism, including uncertainty and quantum randomness, can be understood through analysis of that evolution. This is a foundational program for interpreting quantum mechanics, not a report that standard quantum predictions have been experimentally overturned.

What is Palmer’s Invariant Set Postulate?

In his 2008 proposal, Roger Palmer posits that physical cosmological states belong to a non-computable fractal geometry in state space, invariant under subordinate deterministic causal dynamics. The proposal explores possible implications for contextuality, the quantum formalism, and gravity. It is a proposed framework, not evidence that such a state space has been observed.

Its starting point is therefore cosmological and geometric: the allowed physical states are constrained by a proposed invariant set. That differs from Bohmian mechanics’ explicit particle positions and trajectories. A connection between the two would have to show how one framework’s mathematical objects and rules map to the other’s, rather than treating “deterministic” as a sufficient link.

What does asymptotic safety mean in quantum gravity?

Asymptotic safety is a research program seeking a non-perturbatively renormalizable quantum field theory of gravity. In the scenario, gravitational couplings follow a renormalization-group flow from trans-Planckian scales toward low-energy physics, with ultraviolet behavior that could make a consistent quantum theory possible.

Max Niedermaier and Martin Reuter’s 2006 review describes it as a scenario in which “a renormalizable quantum theory of the gravitational field is feasible which reconciles asymptotically safe couplings with unitarity.” Their review surveys technical evidence from symmetry truncations and truncated flows of the effective average action. Gubitosi, Ripken, and Saueressig’s 2019 review likewise presents an ongoing program; determining the complete set of free parameters remains unfinished. This is evidence developed within approximations and truncations, not experimental confirmation of a final theory of quantum gravity.

How do the three frameworks compare?

Framework Starting point Main explanatory aim Evidence and status
Bohmian mechanics Particle positions added to the quantum-state description, with a law for their evolution. Give a foundational account of quantum dynamics, measurement, and quantum randomness. A developed foundational program; the cited account does not claim that standard quantum predictions have been overturned experimentally.
Invariant Set Postulate A proposed non-computable fractal subset of cosmological state space, invariant under deterministic causal dynamics. Explore a cosmological basis for quantum phenomena, including contextuality and gravity. Palmer’s 2008 exploratory proposal; the cited work does not establish observational confirmation.
Asymptotic safety Gravitational couplings and their renormalization-group flow. Seek a non-perturbatively renormalizable quantum theory of gravity. Technical support within approximations and truncations; full parameter determination remains in progress in the cited 2019 review.

The table separates kinds of claims that are easy to conflate. Bohmian mechanics supplies a particle ontology and dynamics; the Invariant Set Postulate proposes a constrained cosmological state space; asymptotic safety investigates the ultraviolet behavior of gravitational couplings. Determinism is explicit in the first two descriptions, but it cannot simply be carried over to asymptotic-safety calculations without an argument.

Does the “elephant bridge” already unify them?

The cited work describes the three programs individually; it does not demonstrate a shared derivation unifying them. Their different scopes matter: Bohmian mechanics concerns quantum measurement and dynamics, Palmer’s proposal offers a cosmological foundation for quantum theory, and asymptotic safety addresses the ultraviolet completion of gravity. Calling these a bridge states an ambition or thesis to examine, not a conclusion established by the cited literature.

A serious synthesis would need to make several points explicit:

  • Common foundation: State the shared mathematical or physical structure from which the three approaches are meant to follow.
  • Correspondence: Define how particle positions and trajectories, an invariant fractal state-space subset, and gravitational couplings or their flow relate to one another.
  • Derivation: Show which results follow from the shared assumptions and which require additional postulates. Similar language about determinism, for example, is not enough to establish equivalent dynamics.
  • Scope and limits: Explain how the proposed construction addresses quantum dynamics, cosmological state-space constraints, and quantum gravity without treating success in one area as proof of success in the others.
  • Distinctive consequences: Identify predictions that differ from standard quantum theory or competing quantum-gravity programs, then specify what observation could test them.

What could test a proposed synthesis?

A synthesis needs an empirical discriminator: a prediction for which the proposed bridge and a relevant alternative do not give the same outcome. The cited sources do not establish a single shared experimental test for a synthesis of these three approaches. A claim of testability should therefore name the prediction, the competing prediction, and the observation capable of distinguishing them—not just invoke quantum experiments or gravity in general.

That standard also keeps different kinds of support in view. A mathematical result within a truncation can support work on asymptotic safety without settling the empirical status of quantum gravity. A deterministic interpretation or cosmological postulate can be conceptually ambitious without, by itself, demonstrating a new observable effect. Any bridge must connect its formal construction to consequences that can in principle be checked.

How to read the title’s promise fairly

“Rebuilding from first principles” signals a program of explanation. The useful question is not whether the three frameworks can be placed side by side, but whether the proposed account supplies explicit assumptions and derives meaningful connections among their different objects and aims. Until that is shown, Bohmian mechanics, Palmer’s postulate, and asymptotic safety remain distinct programs whose possible relationship is an open thesis rather than an accepted unified theory.
