No. Xbox has not revealed The Elder Scrolls VI’s subtitle. On August 11, 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wrote that she had seen a live playthrough of the game, and she displayed the title with its subtitle replaced by eight asterisks. The redaction has led fans to assume an eight-letter subtitle, but the published posts do not say that, and they do not reveal the wording.
What Sharma’s post actually says
Sharma’s post, as reproduced by GameSpot in its August 11, 2026 report by Eddie Makuch, reads: “Live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ******** this morning. The scale and grandeur are incredible. The story is even greater.” The original X post could not be opened directly when this article was prepared, so the wording above is the text as quoted in that reporting. Gadgets 360 carried the same redaction in its August 12, 2026 coverage.
Two details matter here. First, “live playthrough” describes something Sharma watched, not something the public can play. A playthrough shown to an executive is typically an internal build, so the post confirms that the game was running and presentable, not that a gameplay reveal is coming on any particular date. Second, the post praises the scale, grandeur and story, but it says nothing about setting, characters or systems.
Bethesda’s reply
Bethesda Game Studios answered Sharma with its own redaction. According to Gadgets 360, the studio wrote: “It was great being able to show you ********. Thank you for the kind words and a wonderful visit.” Bethesda’s reply mirrors Sharma’s format, which is why the asterisks have become the focus of attention. It still does not state the subtitle or its length.

Why eight asterisks invite an eight-letter guess
The eight-letter idea comes from counting the asterisks. That count is a reasonable starting point, but it is only a starting point. Three readings fit the public evidence, and none has been confirmed:
- A length match. The asterisks correspond to the subtitle’s actual character count. This is the reading fans have adopted, and it is possible.
- A generic placeholder. Eight asterisks may simply be a conventional way to hide a word without signalling its length.
- Deliberate teasing. The redaction may be a marketing device meant to keep the title secret while signalling that a reveal is near. Its intent is not explained in the statements.
Until Bethesda or Xbox states the subtitle, or the length of the hidden text, the eight-letter claim should be treated as an inference from punctuation rather than a fact.

Where development stands
The most direct official update is Bethesda Game Studios’ July 17, 2026 post, “A Note from Bethesda Game Studios.” It says:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The Elder Scrolls VI is the studio’s “primary development focus today,” and “the majority of our team” is working on it.
- The team is “playing it every day,” and the studio says the game is “where we planned to be.”
- The game is being built on Creation Engine 3.
- The update does not announce a release date.
The July update is the most recent official word on production that the reporting cites. It describes an active, large-scale project, but it does not place the game on a calendar or say when the public will see it.

Franchise context
The same July 17 update cites Bethesda’s figure of more than 65 million copies sold for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and says players are still exploring that game 15 years after its release. That number describes the earlier game. It is not a sales figure for The Elder Scrolls VI and does not indicate anything about the new title’s subtitle or launch.
Fan theories, including “Sentinel”
Several subtitle guesses have circulated, and “Sentinel” is among the most discussed. A October 8, 2026 roundup by Softonic lists fan theories of this kind. These are guesses drawn from the redaction and from the game’s lore, not information from Bethesda or Xbox. None should be described as the leaked, known or official title.

Background on the announcement
GameSpot’s June 10, 2026 coverage marked the anniversary of the game’s June 10, 2018 announcement and noted that no new image or trailer had been released at that point. The studio’s position has since shifted from announcement to active production, but the public still has no official trailer, subtitle or release window in the reporting reviewed for this article.
What is not established
- The official subtitle, and whether it has eight letters.
- The game’s setting, which the August posts do not describe.
- A release date or launch window.
- Any public gameplay. Sharma’s playthrough was a private viewing, and the public has not received gameplay footage in the reporting cited here.
- What the asterisks are meant to signal.
How to judge the next subtitle claim
- Check whether the claim comes from Bethesda, Xbox or another official channel, or from a fan post, rumour site or aggregator.
- Look for the exact words. A redacted title with no stated length supports only a question, not an answer.
- Be wary of any claim that a leaked subtitle has been confirmed. The sources cited here describe the August posts as hints, not disclosures.
- Treat a release date as established only when Bethesda or Xbox announces one, and treat a playable build as public only when a public demo, trailer or launch is announced.
Bottom line on the eight-letter hint
Xbox and Bethesda have confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is in active development and that the subtitle is being kept hidden. They have not confirmed the subtitle, its length or the game’s release date. The eight-asterisk format is the most concrete clue available, but it remains a clue.
