The Drifter is a good pick for Nintendo Switch owners who want a story-led 2D point-and-click adventure they can play handheld, on a tabletop stand, or on a TV. The Switch release is listed for 22 June 2026, after the game first appeared on Steam and GOG on 17 July 2025. The main caveats are tone and pacing: the game is adult and violent in places, and its puzzles follow a linear path that can produce trial-and-error frustration.

What kind of game The Drifter is

Nintendo categorises The Drifter as a Puzzle and Adventure title. Its listing describes a fast-paced 2D point-and-click structure in which the puzzles exist to move the story forward, with practical, grounded problems that tie into the plot rather than sitting apart from it.

The protagonist is Mick Carter. Nintendo’s listing says he witnesses a killing, is framed for it, and is pursued and pulled into a conspiracy. The premise as presented in the publisher’s material adds a darker opening: Carter is a drifter who is murdered and revives moments before death, and the investigation that follows is what drives the game.

Release timeline across platforms

The Drifter did not launch on Switch first. Powerhoof’s press kit lists the following dates, and the difference matters when you read older coverage.

Platform Release date Where the date is stated
Steam and GOG (PC) 17 July 2025 Powerhoof press kit
Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 22 June 2026 Powerhoof press kit; Nintendo UK listing for Switch

Reviews published around the original PC launch therefore describe the game before its console debut. Newer console reviews, including the one discussed below, cover a different edition and a different platform.

Soundtrack

Powerhoof’s launch post mentions The Drifter Original Soundtrack as Steam DLC. The sources used here do not confirm a Switch-specific soundtrack or a physical soundtrack release, so do not assume one is available on Switch.

Playing handheld, tabletop or on TV

Handheld play is the strongest argument for this version. Developer Dave Lloyd wrote on the Powerhoof homepage on 23 June 2026:

“I’d designed the game to be playable on Switch since the early days and always loved how it feels and looks on the handheld, so great to finally have it out.”

That is the developer’s stated intent and opinion. It is not independent performance testing. For independent observations, the Nintendo Life reviewer played in both handheld and docked modes, though that review covers the Switch 2 edition (see below).

  • Handheld: the Switch used as a portable console, the most natural fit for a game built around short, scannable scenes.
  • Tabletop: the console propped on its stand or a table, with the screen in front of you.
  • TV: docked play on a television, the mode Nintendo lists as TV.

Controls and the Pro Controller

The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is listed as compatible, but it is an option rather than a requirement, because the listing also supports handheld and tabletop play. If you prefer a stick and buttons for moving between hotspots, it is worth having one on hand. If you prefer to play in handheld mode, you do not need to buy one to play the game.

The Nintendo Life reviewer described smart controls and a streamlined interface that highlights interactive points, and noted brief timed sections. They also described two ways of interacting: Joy-Con mouse mode and controller-based interaction. These observations belong to the Switch 2 edition the reviewer played and should not be assumed for Switch 1.

DRAGON BALL FighterZ - Nintendo Switch

  • Spectacular fights: Experience aerial combos, destructible stages, and famous scenes from the Dragon Ball anime reproduced in 60 FPS

  • HIGH-END ANIME GRAPHICS: Using the power of the Unreal engine and the talented team at Arc System Works, DRAGON BALL FighterZ is a visual tour-de-force.
  • Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Content Description: Cartoon violence, mild language, mild suggestive themes

What the Nintendo Life review says

Roland Ingram reviewed the European Nintendo Switch 2 edition on 25 June 2026 and gave it 9/10. The table below separates the praise, the criticism and the reviewer’s own play time.

Aspect Reviewer’s observation (Switch 2 edition)
Score 9/10
Praise Pulp story and atmosphere, distinctive art, adaptable controls, streamlined interface
Drawbacks Linear puzzle progression and occasional trial-and-error frustration
Play time About 10 hours for the reviewer’s run, not a guaranteed completion time
Other notes Brief timed sections; Joy-Con mouse mode and controller-based interaction

The reviewer’s conclusion puts the game’s blend of old and new this way:

“The Drifter might hark back to 20th-century point-and-clicks with its pixel visuals, but its smart controls, streamlined interface and smooth scrolling place it firmly in the modern world.”

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - US Version
  • A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
  • Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
  • Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
  • Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
  • Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.

Both the publisher’s description and the review agree that the game is focused on story and puzzles. The review adds that the tone is adult-oriented, violent and grotesque, and that is the point where readers need to make their own call.

Tone and content suitability

Nintendo’s UK listing carries a PEGI 16 rating with strong violence and strong language flags. The review describes the same tone in stronger terms. Teenagers aged 16 and over, and adults who enjoy noir-style crime fiction, are the obvious audience. Parents of younger players should treat the rating as the starting point and read the review before buying.

Switch or Switch 2?

The sources do not establish technical differences between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. Powerhoof lists both consoles under the same 22 June 2026 date. Nintendo Life’s review covers the Switch 2 edition only, so its score, control notes and play time do not establish how the game runs on the original Switch. Owners of either console should expect the same listed modes and features, but the sources do not confirm that the two versions are identical in performance.

The sources also do not establish a physical cartridge release. The Switch listing is for a digital download, and you should check a retailer if you specifically want a physical copy.

Who should buy it and who should wait

  • Buy it if you enjoy story-led puzzle adventures, want a game you can play in handheld mode, and are comfortable with adult, violent themes.
  • Wait if you dislike linear puzzle progression, find trial-and-error frustrating, or want a long game. The reviewer’s roughly 10 hours is one run, not a benchmark.
  • Skip it if you are under 16 or unhappy with strong violence and strong language.

Verdict

The Drifter is a strong match for Switch players who want a moody, story-first point-and-click that suits short sessions on the go. Its 9/10 review comes from a single reviewer playing the Switch 2 edition, so treat it as one informed opinion rather than a consensus. Judge the game by its tone and pacing first, and check your region’s storefront details before purchase.
