A July 2022 newsletter described Chinese users sharing adult-only material through Wallpaper Engine, while U.S. authorities announced what the Justice Department called the first-ever cryptocurrency insider-trading tipping scheme. The two stories are distinct: the China account rests here on a dated newsletter repost, and the crypto case later led to a guilty plea, a prison sentence and civil settlements.
How did Chinese users use Wallpaper Engine?
A July 23, 2022 newsletter repost summarized Zeyi Yang’s reporting by describing Wallpaper Engine as animated and interactive wallpaper software. It said some users were using it as a cloud drive and video player to exchange adult-only content, in the context of China’s restrictions on pornography. That is an account of reported use, not advice for evading local restrictions.
The repost also attributed to MIT Technology Review an estimate that at least 40% of Wallpaper Engine’s global user base was Chinese. This was a dated 2022 estimate repeated secondhand by the newsletter; its original methodology is not established here. The repost is the only independently available support for the claims about Chinese use and access, so they should not be treated as a current or independently verified picture.
What was the first crypto insider-trading case?
On July 21, 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission announced separate proceedings concerning trading ahead of Coinbase token-listing announcements. Prosecutors alleged that former Coinbase product manager Ishan Wahi shared confidential listing information with his brother Nikhil Wahi and friend Sameer Ramani, who allegedly used it to trade before announcements. DOJ described the alleged conduct as the first-ever cryptocurrency insider-trading tipping scheme.

The SEC brought a civil securities-law complaint; DOJ pursued criminal wire-fraud charges. These were different legal proceedings and theories, not one universal ruling about whether crypto assets are securities. SEC Division of Enforcement Director Gurbir S. Grewal stated the agency’s position in the case: “We are not concerned with labels, but rather the economic realities of an offering.” That was the SEC’s explanation of its approach, not a court ruling on all crypto assets.
Why did reports give different profit figures?
| Agency and date | Figure and description |
|---|---|
| SEC, July 2022 | More than $1.1 million in alleged illicit profits. |
| U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, July 2022 | Approximately $1.5 million in alleged realized and unrealized gains. |
The agencies used differently worded measures. The amounts should therefore remain attributed to their respective releases rather than being combined or treated as interchangeable.

What happened after the 2022 announcements?
The criminal and civil records developed after the initial allegations. DOJ announced Ishan Wahi’s guilty plea in February 2023 and his two-year prison sentence in May 2023. In June 2023, the SEC announced settlements with Ishan and Nikhil Wahi. These later outcomes are distinct from the July 2022 charging announcements; the official releases cited here establish developments through 2023.
