This November 19, 2024 edition of The Download pairs two technology stories: an adoption-forward message about AI at a gathering of police leaders and a subscriber-only discussion about what may come next for mixed-reality glasses and goggles. It is a dated newsletter guide—not a current product review or evidence that police AI systems are effective or safe.
What the police AI item reports
James O’Donnell’s report describes police leaders gathering at an International Association of Chiefs of Police event for product demonstrations, discussions, parties, and awards. The newsletter characterizes the message from the expo hall, talks, and interviews as a push for departments that had been slow to adopt AI to move quickly, and says leaders appeared enthusiastic.
That is a description of the event’s atmosphere and adoption message, not an assessment of AI performance. The excerpt does not identify the products, departments, specific deployments, or safeguards discussed in the full story. It therefore cannot establish how accurately any system works, what tasks it performs, or how a department reviews its outputs.

The edition also gives the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s scale as “18,000 police departments,” without specifying a year. That figure is contextual; it is not a count of departments using AI.

What the mixed-reality item offers
The second thread promotes “What’s Next for Mixed Reality: Glasses, Goggles, and More,” a subscriber-only Roundtables conversation hosted by editor-in-chief Mat Honan and AI hardware reporter James O’Donnell. The edition frames augmented-reality glasses as an emerging category and points readers to related coverage, including Snap’s augmented-reality Spectacles.
This is an event promotion and reading guide, not a comparison or buying recommendation. The excerpt provides no device specifications, model identification for the Spectacles, capability assessment, availability information, or price. It cannot answer which glasses are best or what a particular pair can do.

How to read this edition
- For the police AI thread: Treat the reported enthusiasm as a signal about the conversation at the event, not proof of accuracy, safety, or successful deployment.
- For the mixed-reality thread: Treat the Roundtables session and Spectacles mention as pointers to further coverage, not evidence that specific devices were tested against one another.
- For the date: The edition was published November 19, 2024. Its framing should not be mistaken for an up-to-date account of products or deployments.
