An ADAS camera can remain powered and produce an image while giving its perception software a view that differs from the conditions it was calibrated or trained to handle. Lens geometry, the windshield, rain, dirt, occlusion and fog each alter the image in different ways. Physics-informed machine learning can use optical information to improve confidence estimates, but it does not remove the need for sound calibration, environmental testing and vehicle-level validation.

How can an ADAS camera fail if it is still working?

“Camera failure” can mean more than a dead sensor or a broken connection. A camera may send frames normally, yet those frames may no longer contain the same geometric or visual information that its downstream perception model expects. The resulting problem is a mismatch between the scene, the image-forming system and the model—not necessarily an electrical failure.

That distinction matters because different causes call for different remedies. Rectifying lens geometry does not remove raindrops; cleaning a lens does not correct windshield-induced aberration; and improving a model’s confidence estimate does not restore missing visual information. A field symptom such as missed or uncertain detections therefore does not, by itself, identify one dominant cause.

What changes the image before the model sees it?

Wide-angle lens distortion bends scene geometry

Wide-field, fisheye and super-wide-angle lenses can map a straight line in the scene to a curve in the image, with pronounced distortion often near the edges. A 2019 study by Kumbham and colleagues investigated self-calibration and image rectification for larger-field-of-view ADAS cameras. Its approach estimates distortion parameters using candidate lines and a straightness constraint, then rectifies images for downstream tasks.

Rectification is not a free improvement: stretching the outer parts of an image can reduce or alter useful detail, and the study reports limitations with severe distortion and low-cost, low-resolution imagery. It compares its method with OpenCV and other approaches, but does not establish universal superiority. The practical question is not simply whether an image can be made geometrically straighter, but whether the corrected image retains the information needed for the task.

The windshield is part of the optical system

The camera lens does not form an image in isolation. Light passes through the windshield before reaching the sensor, so the glass and lens jointly shape the image. Windshield-induced optical aberration can shift incoming data away from the distribution represented in a model’s training data, even when the camera itself has no obvious hardware fault.

A 2024 preprint by Wolf, Braun and Ulrich explores this problem for semantic segmentation. It uses Zernike coefficients—descriptors of optical aberrations—as physical priors in a parameterized temperature-scaling method for uncertainty calibration. This is a research demonstration of a way to calibrate model confidence under optical aberrations, not evidence that every ADAS task or deployed vehicle receives the same benefit.

Rain, contamination, occlusion and fog remove or obscure visual evidence

Rain can change the image through droplets, streaks and reduced visibility; dirt or other contamination can obscure part of the camera’s view; and fog reduces scene visibility. Occlusion may be total, partial or transparent. These conditions can deprive perception software of the visual cues it uses, rather than merely bending image geometry.

A 2024 SAE paper by Li and colleagues describes a controllable, full-scale rain simulation system with dynamic rain intensity and droplet distributions, along with camera-evaluation methods and sample results. A 2023 paper by Hajdu and Lakatos discusses monitoring for contamination, occlusion and fog. These works describe testing and monitoring approaches; they do not establish a single leading cause of real-world camera problems or a field-failure rate.

Why does an ADAS camera seem to stop working in rain?

Rain can make the camera’s input less informative or change its appearance enough to challenge a perception system. The camera may still be capturing frames, while the model becomes less able to identify or locate objects reliably. Whether that produces a warning, a degraded function or an apparent failure depends on the vehicle’s system design; the cited studies do not establish one behavior for all vehicles.

Controlled testing helps separate weather effects from other variables. In 2022, Ozarkar and colleagues described a physics-based adverse-weather simulation workflow that couples fluid and optical simulation. Together with the 2024 SAE wind-tunnel rain work, this illustrates why repeatable test conditions matter: outdoor weather varies, while a controlled setup can expose cameras and algorithms to specified scenarios for comparison.

What does physics-informed machine learning change?

Ordinary image-based learning can treat a camera frame mainly as pixels and learned patterns. A physics-informed approach can also use knowledge of how optics produced those pixels. For the windshield-aberration case, the 2024 preprint adds Zernike-based optical information to uncertainty calibration. Its reported result is reduced expected calibration error for semantic segmentation under optical aberrations.

That outcome concerns confidence calibration: whether a model’s stated confidence better reflects its likelihood of being correct. It is not the same as proving that the model detects more objects, that an image has been restored, or that a vehicle is safer. The preprint does not demonstrate fleet-scale deployment or a safety guarantee. Calibration and validation remain necessary, and uncertainty estimates cannot recreate detail that weather or occlusion has hidden.

Geometric self-calibration and rectification Scene-line candidates and straightness constraints to estimate lens distortion Camera distortion parameters and a rectified image Kumbham et al. (2019) discuss larger-FOV ADAS imagery; severe distortion, low-resolution imagery and edge stretching are limitations.
Physics-informed uncertainty calibration Optical-system Zernike coefficients as priors for aberration-aware calibration Better-calibrated confidence estimates for semantic segmentation Wolf, Braun and Ulrich (2024 preprint) report reduced expected calibration error under optical aberrations; this is not vehicle-level safety evidence.
Synthetic-data calibration prediction Synthetic data for learning camera calibration and distortion parameters Predicted calibration and distortion parameters Chaudhry et al. (2025) present Deep-BrownConrady. The available source information does not establish a deployment outcome or universal performance advantage.
Controlled adverse-weather simulation Specified rain conditions or coupled fluid-and-optical weather simulation Repeatable camera and perception evaluation Li et al. (SAE, 2024) describe full-scale dynamic rain simulation; Ozarkar et al. (SAE, 2022) describe a physics-based workflow. No specific degradation percentage is established here.
Contamination and sensor-disagreement monitoring Occlusion, fog or disagreement between camera and ranging sensors A possible diagnostic or monitoring signal Hajdu and Lakatos (2023) discuss contamination, occlusion and fog monitoring. A 2026 IEEE conference record proposes camera-ranging inconsistency as a safety trigger at abstract level; it is not established here as production practice.

What should calibration and testing account for?

Calibration needs to reflect the optical path and conditions in which the camera will operate, not just the sensor in isolation. A calibration or validation plan can distinguish among geometric distortion, windshield effects and environmental degradation by recording the setup and varying one factor at a time where possible.

  • Separate the failure modes: distinguish geometric warping from obscuration, visibility loss and model-confidence problems.
  • Test the installed optical path: account for the windshield and camera placement as well as the lens.
  • Include environmental scenarios: use repeatable rain and adverse-weather testing rather than assuming clear-weather results transfer unchanged.
  • Evaluate the right outcome: image rectification, calibration-parameter accuracy, perception performance and uncertainty calibration are different measures.
  • Validate beyond a single benchmark: synthetic data or a controlled test can isolate variables, but neither alone establishes performance across real vehicles and field conditions.

For an in-vehicle camera, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s calibration procedure after repair, replacement or other work that requires recalibration. A bench experiment is a separate activity: a calibration target may help reproduce a controlled camera-calibration setup, but the 2019 ADAS study does not recommend a particular checkerboard, retail target or vehicle-specific method.

What is established—and what is not?

The cited work establishes that several distinct optical and environmental mechanisms can alter camera inputs, and that research methods exist for rectification, optical-prior-based uncertainty calibration, synthetic calibration prediction and repeatable weather testing. It does not establish a general ADAS camera failure rate, a single dominant field cause, a quantified safety improvement or a universal remedy. Those conclusions would require evidence across specific vehicles, camera installations, perception tasks and operating conditions.
