A new study estimates that hot water continued circulating through the Chicxulub impact crater for at least about 8 million years after the asteroid struck Earth. That long-lived hydrothermal system could have created conditions suitable for life, but the study does not show that microbes lived there throughout that period—or that the crater was literally teeming with life.

What the study found

Chicxulub, the impact structure in what is now Mexico associated with the end-Cretaceous mass extinction, formed about 66 million years ago. A 2026 study in Communications Earth & Environment concludes that its post-impact hydrothermal activity persisted for at least about 8 million years. The authors describe this as roughly four times longer than earlier estimates and the longest-lived impact-generated hydrothermal system documented on Earth. Read the study.

“Hydrothermal activity” means hot water circulating through fractured rock, heated by the impact. The estimate concerns how long that system remained active; it is not a count or duration of organisms living in it.

How researchers estimated the system’s lifetime

The team examined impact-melt rocks recovered from Chicxulub’s peak ring during Expedition 364, an international drilling project at Site M0077. They dated potassium-rich feldspar minerals using argon-argon geochronology, a method that uses radioactive decay to estimate when minerals formed or were last altered.

Some mineral ages were much younger than the impact. One possible explanation was that hydrothermal fluids formed or altered the minerals later. Another was that a later heating event disturbed the dating signal. Co-author Marissa Tremblay tested the later-heating explanation with laboratory experiments and mathematical modelling; Purdue University’s account says those results made it unlikely. The researchers combined the mineral-age evidence with numerical simulations to estimate the system’s duration. Purdue’s summary of the study.

How this compares with earlier estimates

Earlier approaches produced shorter estimates, though they did not all measure the same thing. A prior model estimated about 1.5–2.3 million years for the rock to cool to 90°C at one kilometre depth; cooling below temperatures associated with thermophilic organisms would take longer. A separate magnetic and stratigraphic constraint indicated that the system remained very hot for about 150,000–500,000 years.

Evidence or estimate What it indicates
Earlier numerical model About 1.5–2.3 million years to cool to 90°C at one kilometre depth; a longer period to cool below the thermophilic temperature window.
Magnetic and stratigraphic constraint About 150,000–500,000 years in a very hot state.
2026 mineral dating and simulations Hydrothermal activity lasted at least about 8 million years.

These are not identical measures of heat or activity, so the figures should not be read as competing stopwatch readings. The new result is a substantial upward revision of Chicxulub’s estimated hydrothermal lifetime. The study also notes that crater thermal histories remain poorly constrained and that more thermochronometric measurements are needed.

Does eight million years mean the crater was full of life?

No. A long-lived supply of heat and water in fractured rock could provide potentially habitable conditions, but habitability is not evidence that organisms were present. The 2026 study does not establish continuous microbial occupation of the hydrothermal system for eight million years. Evidence linking microbes to particular impact processes is rare and difficult to date, and the surviving rock record is too limited to confirm that early-Earth impact environments were inhabited.

There is separate evidence for biological recovery in the marine basin after the impact. A 2018 study of crater sediments found that marine life returned within years and that a high-productivity ecosystem was established within about 30,000 years. Those findings concern fossil and sediment evidence in the basin, not proof of deep microbial life in the hydrothermal system over its estimated lifetime. Read the 2018 recovery study.

A 2025 review of Expedition 364 findings also discusses rapid oceanic recovery and thermophilic life in the buried peak ring 66 million years later. That is distinct from evidence that the hydrothermal system was continuously occupied throughout the eight-million-year interval. Read the review.

Why the result matters beyond Chicxulub

Impact craters combine heat, water and fractured rock—ingredients that can make them useful places to investigate prebiotic chemistry, the development of life, or microbial survival. The Chicxulub result suggests that such conditions may persist much longer than some earlier estimates indicated. Purdue co-author Marissa Tremblay described long-lived impact hydrothermal systems as places that might be good for life to develop on early Earth or other planets; this is a possibility, not a discovery of extraterrestrial life.

Chicxulub is an unusually large, well-preserved example, but its target rocks do not necessarily match those of early Earth or other worlds. The study therefore supports using impact craters as analogues for potentially habitable environments, not assuming that those environments were inhabited.
