Apps are not disappearing. What may be fading is the expectation that you must open each one and navigate its screens to get something done. AI assistants are beginning to connect to app services and expose some of their capabilities through conversation. That makes the assistant a new interface layer—not a replacement for the services underneath. The examples are real; evidence that people are abandoning standalone apps at scale is not.
Are apps going away because of AI?
Not in the literal sense. The emerging change is that you can describe an outcome—such as finding information, scheduling an event, or sending a message—and an assistant may use a connected service to help carry it out. Instead of navigating from app to app, you interact with the assistant, which may respond in chat, show an interactive component, or pass the task to another service.
That shifts the role of the app interface, but it does not make the underlying service unnecessary. The assistant still depends on the app or service that stores the data or performs the action. Standalone apps also remain useful when you need their full feature set, prefer direct control, or want to inspect and correct details yourself.

How assistants are bringing app capabilities into chat
Apps inside ChatGPT
On October 6, 2025, OpenAI announced apps that users could interact with inside ChatGPT. The company described natural-language conversations alongside interactive interface components, with users able to name an app or have ChatGPT suggest one when relevant. The announcement also introduced an Apps SDK preview for developers, built on MCP. These are capabilities described in a dated launch announcement, not a guarantee that every app or feature is currently available to every user. OpenAI’s announcement
OpenAI’s launch terms included specific regional and account rollout conditions at the time. Those conditions may have changed, so the announcement should not be treated as a current availability checker. It also described a connection prompt on first use and developer privacy requirements; users should review the current product’s prompts and terms before connecting a service.

Gemini Connected Apps
Google says Gemini can connect to other apps to help complete requests and, with permission, take actions in them. Its examples include creating calendar events, searching productivity apps, playing media, grocery shopping, booking reservations, and sending messages. The actual set of available apps and actions is conditional: Google says it can vary by location, language, device, account context, and Gemini app. Some connections also depend on settings such as Keep Activity. Google’s documentation also describes ways to connect or disconnect apps. Before relying on an assistant to change or send something, check which service it is using and what it proposes to do; permissions and available controls are part of the feature, not incidental details.

What is MCP, and why does it matter for apps?
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems and data. Anthropic introduced it on November 25, 2024, describing a model in which MCP servers expose data or capabilities and AI clients connect to those servers. In practical terms, a protocol like MCP can give an assistant a structured route to information or tools beyond its own chat interface. Anthropic’s MCP announcement
MCP is an integration mechanism, not evidence that every app supports it or that assistants can reliably complete every task. A connection can make a capability reachable; it does not make the assistant’s interpretation, recommendation, or action automatically correct. The protocol’s existence therefore helps explain how the interface shift can happen, but does not establish mass adoption or make conventional app interfaces obsolete.

What changes for users—and what still needs to work?
A conversational front end can reduce the need to remember which app holds a feature or to move through multiple menus. It may also introduce a new intermediary between you and the service: the assistant interprets the request, chooses a tool or connection, and presents or performs an action. That can be convenient, but it makes visibility and control especially important.

- Know what is connected. Review which services an assistant can access and disconnect ones you no longer want linked.
- Inspect consequential actions. For messages, bookings, purchases, or edits, look for a clear confirmation of what will happen before it happens.
- Check the result in the service. If an action matters, verify it in the app or account that owns the data rather than assuming a conversational response proves it succeeded.
- Keep a recovery path. If a request is misunderstood or an action is wrong, the original service’s interface may be the place to correct or undo it.
- Expect variation. Connected features can differ by region, language, device, account, settings, and product version.
These are design requirements and practical precautions, not a claim that every assistant currently handles confirmation, explanation, or recovery equally well. The cited product documentation describes connections and permissions, but it does not provide a standardized comparison of reliability across assistants.

Will AI assistants replace apps?
They may replace some app-opening and menu-navigation habits for tasks that assistants can handle well. They are not shown to replace apps as software services, nor is there comparable independent usage data here demonstrating that assistants have caused people to use standalone apps less. OpenAI’s launch announcement and Google’s support page establish that connected experiences exist; Anthropic’s MCP announcement explains one way integrations can be built. None measures displacement across the app market.
A more useful way to judge the shift is to ask what each experience actually supports, where it is available, what permission it requires, whether it acts in chat or hands off to another service, and how clearly it shows what it is doing. Until there is evidence of sustained usage change, “the death of apps” remains a provocative description of a changing interface—not a demonstrated market outcome.
