The early twist in The Celebrity Traitors was a recruitment choice—not one Traitor betraying another. Premiere coverage identified Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant as the original Traitors; after they chose James Acaster and Amol Rajan as candidates, episode-two coverage reported that Acaster joined them and Rajan was murdered.
What was the early twist?
In the series premiere on October 1, 2026, Claudia Winkleman selected Maya Jama and Richard E. Grant as the initial Traitors. The season began with 21 celebrity players, according to Goss.ie’s premiere report.
The pair were then allowed to put forward two candidates who would plead to join them. The choice was between James Acaster and Amol Rajan: one would become a Traitor, while the other would be murdered. The Standard’s episode-two coverage reports that Acaster was recruited and Rajan was murdered.

The season opened with two Traitors
Some viewers were surprised that Winkleman began with two Traitors rather than the three they had seen in the previous season, as The Standard’s premiere coverage notes. Goss.ie quoted social posts asking, “Only two Traitors?” and “Am I missing something or did we only see two people picked for Traitors?”

Acaster did not want to leave the Faithful
The recruitment forced Acaster to choose between joining the Traitors and facing the stated consequence of refusing. The Standard reported his response as: “I can’t believe I’m a Traitor, I’m gutted to not be Faithful anymore, I don’t like lying, but if I don’t join, then they kill me.” The outlet also quoted a viewer saying, “I really feel for James Acaster, he wanted so badly to be a faithful and have fun being a detective”. These are examples of reactions reported by the outlet, not a measure of the audience as a whole.
Did Richard E. Grant betray another Traitor?
The reports reviewed do not establish that. The Standard says Grant told Joe Lycett, “I am a traitor,” then later appeared to backtrack. That is a reported in-game disclosure and reversal, but the coverage does not describe it as a betrayal of another Traitor. The documented twist was the recruitment decision between Acaster and Rajan, not a confirmed Traitor turning on a fellow Traitor.

Where did episode two leave the game?
After a mission, Jerry Hall and Hannah Fry were vulnerable to murder. The episode’s round table ended on a cliffhanger, with the banishment unresolved in The Standard’s report. That coverage does not establish who was banished, so the episode’s result should not be inferred from the cliffhanger alone.
