The Blood of Dawnwalker is a dark fantasy action RPG about a hero who is human by day and vampire by night. It launched September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Reviews of the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions find promise in its writing and atmosphere, but also point to familiar open-world design, uneven combat, and technical roughness. There is no cited head-to-head performance test across platforms, so choose based on your hardware and the edition extras you actually want.

What kind of game is The Blood of Dawnwalker?

Rebel Wolves’ first game, published by Bandai Namco, is a single-player open-world dark fantasy action RPG. It takes place in 14th-century Europe, in Vale Sangora, a fictional region of the Carpathian Mountains. You play Coen, who is trying to save his family from the vampire lord Brencis.

The central hook is Coen’s changing nature: he is human by day and vampire by night. The publisher presents the day-and-night cycle and player choices as forces that shape both the story and gameplay. That premise gives the game a clear identity, though it does not by itself establish how satisfying every system is in play.

What do reviews say about the game?

The available reviews here offer two platform-specific perspectives, not a controlled comparison. Treat their criticisms and praise as each outlet’s assessment of the version it reviewed.

#1 Best Overall
THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER: Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
  • Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

Xbox Series X: story appeal with rough edges

Tom’s Guide reviewed the Xbox Series X version. It praised the writing and atmosphere, but criticized the open world as barren, combat as clunky, and the game as having technical rough edges. Its overall view is that the story can make the experience compelling, depending on how much roughness a player is willing to tolerate. Read Tom’s Guide’s Xbox Series X review.

PS5: a striking but familiar medieval world

Creative Bloq reviewed the PS5 version and described a broad medieval landscape of hamlets, towers, castles, forests, caves, and mountain passes. Its review sees the resemblance to The Witcher 3 as both a point of appeal and a limitation: the familiar foundations may attract fans of that style, while making it harder for the game to feel wholly distinctive. The Blood of Dawnwalker Collector Edition [PS5]
  • Make the story your own - Experience and design the plot the way you want it. Set out to save your family, or swear revenge on your Creator and destroy all who stand in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Plunge into the action or take time to prepare. Go alone or find friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day and Night - Experience two different gameplay loops with different abilities to choose from, secrets to uncover, and different ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every action counts - every action - and every inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family's days are numbered, and every time you take a quest, time progresses and brings you closer to the end. Choose carefully who you help and who you leave behind. You won't have time for all. The world is waiting for no one. And neither does evil.
  • Sword, claws and anger - Defy gravity, become a brutal force of nature and use your supernatural abilities as a vampire. Or raise your sword and use powerful magic to take on your opponents as a human being. Experiment and adapt as your shape changes throughout the day and night; each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Open world full of adventure - venture through the handmade open world and discover everything it has to offer. Stroll through the lush forests, the vast plains, the treacherous swamps and explore the steep mountain peaks and medieval settlements. Explore forgotten ruins, find remains of an ancient civilization, and uncover a truth that might have preferred to remain hidden.

Neither review establishes how the PC version performs, and neither supports a ranking of console frame rates, resolution, bugs, or patch effectiveness. Bandai Namco announced a major day-one patch, but that announcement does not establish the condition of later builds. Check current platform-specific reports if technical performance is your deciding factor.

Which platform should you choose?

The game is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The cited publisher materials do not provide comparable console performance figures, so there is no evidence-based winner for image quality or smoothness. Choose the platform you already use, and on PC, compare your components with the official requirements before buying.

Which edition should you buy?

The publisher documents a standard edition, physical Day 1 and Collector’s editions, and Eclipse digital content. The official contents do not establish current prices, stock, or value for money; those can differ by retailer and region. Confirm what is available locally before choosing.

Edition or content What the publisher lists Best fit
Standard Base game Players who want the game without listed extras.
Day 1 Edition (physical) Base game, steelbook, world map, and early unlock of the Sangoran Wayfarer’s Armor Set Players who want the physical items and the early armor unlock. The publisher says the armor can also be obtained later in-game; participating-retailer availability is limited by stock.
Eclipse digital content Digital world compendium, digital comic book, digital soundtrack, and the same early-unlock armor bonus Players who want the listed digital extras. Check whether it is sold as an upgrade or bundled with the edition you are considering.
Collector’s Edition (physical) Base game, steelbook, 33 × 40 cm world map, 23 cm Purearts Coen figurine in a collector box, 60-page hardcover physical world compendium, plus Eclipse digital content Collectors who specifically want the physical display items and book as well as the digital content.

If you only want to play, the standard edition is the straightforward choice. Pay extra for another edition only if its physical or digital items matter to you; the armor is an early unlock, not described as permanently exclusive.

Is The Blood of Dawnwalker worth buying?

It looks most appealing if you want a story-led dark fantasy RPG and the day-to-night human-and-vampire premise interests you. The reviews point to strong atmosphere and writing, but also give reason to be cautious if you expect a consistently polished open world or tight combat. For PC buyers, check the requirements first. For console buyers, the available reviews do not establish a technical advantage for either PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

In short, this is a buy-if-the-premise-and-story-come-first choice rather than a safe recommendation for polished combat or a technically proven console version. Match the edition to the extras you value, and consult current local listings for price and availability.
