A black rectangle placed over PDF text may hide it on screen without removing the underlying content. To remove sensitive text or images, use a PDF editor’s redaction feature, apply the redactions, save a processed copy, and inspect that copy before sharing. In Adobe Acrobat, redaction and removal of hidden information are separate operations.
Why a black box may not protect PDF content
A drawn shape or annotation can change what appears on the page without deleting what is underneath. Depending on how the PDF was made, someone may be able to select or copy the covered text, remove the shape, or otherwise reveal content that remains in the file. The rectangle’s appearance alone does not prove that the information is gone.
Adobe describes redaction as permanently hiding selected sensitive information from a PDF. In practice, use the program’s redaction tool and apply the marked redactions; do not treat a visual overlay as an equivalent. Adobe’s documented workflow is to mark the content, apply the redaction, decide whether to remove hidden information, and save the resulting document. Interface labels can change, so the exact wording may vary by Acrobat version.

- Make a copy of the PDF so the original remains unchanged.
- Open Acrobat Pro’s Redact a PDF workflow.
- Select the text or image you want to redact.
- Choose Apply to commit the marked redactions.
- When prompted, decide whether to sanitize the document and remove hidden information.
- Continue through the prompts and save the processed document under a different name.
These are Adobe’s product instructions; they are not a report of independent testing. Keep the unredacted original secure, and review the saved output—not just the editing view—before sending it.
Redaction and sanitization are different
Redaction addresses selected content visible on the page. Sanitization addresses hidden information that may remain elsewhere in the file. Adobe lists examples its removal workflow may address, including metadata, comments, attachments, scripts, hidden layers, and embedded content. Removing visible text does not automatically mean every kind of hidden data has been removed; consider the sanitization option as a separate step when confidentiality matters. Find repeated sensitive text before applying redactions
If a name, account number, or phrase appears more than once, manually marking only the first instance can leave other copies exposed. Acrobat’s search workflow can find a word or phrase, multiple phrases, or patterns, then mark matches for redaction before you apply the changes. Check the document for other instances and review the saved result afterward; search is a way to find candidates, not a substitute for checking the whole file. Check the saved PDF before sharing it
- Open the saved, redacted copy and confirm that the targeted text and images are no longer visible.
- Check for other occurrences of the same sensitive information, including pages or areas you did not initially mark.
- Where appropriate, test whether the supposedly removed text can still be selected or copied from the saved file.
- Review whether hidden information such as comments, attachments, or metadata also needs to be removed.
These checks help catch oversights, but they should not be read as a guarantee that every PDF or workflow is secure. Adobe’s general guidance recommends working from a copy, applying redactions, considering hidden-data removal, and saving under a different name: Remove hidden information and sensitive content.
