The biggest drawbacks of switching to Windows from Mac are practical, not universal: familiar shortcuts and interface conventions change, some apps or workflows may not transfer cleanly, and Apple-service integrations need checking. Before replacing your Mac with a Windows PC, list the software, files, devices, and services you rely on and verify each one on the Windows version you intend to use.
What changes when you move from macOS to Windows?
Mac and Windows organize common tasks differently. Apple’s Mac guide describes the menu bar, Dock, window controls, Command-key shortcuts, and trackpad gestures as part of the Mac experience. On Windows, you will encounter different conventions, including different keyboard shortcuts and ways of switching between apps. The change can slow familiar tasks until you build new habits, but how much it matters depends on how you use your computer; there is no supported estimate for how long adjustment takes.
Microsoft’s Mac-to-Windows developer guide suggests shortcut key mapping as one way to adapt workflows. For example, Mac users may know Command+Tab for app switching; the guide compares it with Alt+Tab on Windows. Shortcut remapping can help, but it does not make the two operating systems behave identically.

Will your essential apps and work still function?
Check your own must-have apps rather than assuming they will all have Windows versions with the same features. Availability, feature parity, file handling, and licensing can differ by app. Apple notes that some familiar cross-platform software, including Microsoft Office, is available on Mac, but that does not establish Windows compatibility for every app you use or prove that purchases transfer between platforms.

- Check how your documents, project files, libraries, and app-specific data can be opened or moved.
- Confirm whether your license or subscription permits use on a Windows PC.
Apple’s support guide explains migration from a Windows PC to a Mac, including moving settings and personal data. That is the reverse direction from your proposed switch; it does not establish that every item moves from Mac to Windows in the same way. Verify important files and app data individually before you rely on them.
Could you lose Apple-service or device continuity?
If you rely on Apple services or integrations between your Mac and other Apple devices, treat their Windows compatibility as a separate pre-switch check. Support can vary by specific service, feature, and device combination; the available guidance does not establish that every Apple service disappears on Windows or that every one has an equivalent. Identify the exact functions you use—such as syncing, sharing, or device handoff—and confirm how each will work with your planned setup.

Will the switch affect a developer workflow?
Developers should check whether their work depends on macOS-specific tools or workflows, especially Xcode. Microsoft’s guide covers Windows, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), and Windows-native developer tools, and describes Visual Studio as the nearest Windows-native equivalent to Xcode for native Windows app development. “Nearest equivalent” does not mean it replaces every Xcode workflow; confirm that your target platforms, build tools, and project requirements are supported before changing machines.
Are you replacing the Mac or running Windows on it?
These are different decisions. The limitations Microsoft documents for running Windows 11 Arm in virtualization apply to that setup on Apple silicon Macs with M1, M2, or M3 chips—not to a new Windows PC. Microsoft warns that some apps, games, and hardware may be affected, including apps that rely on DirectX 12; it also lists unsupported nested-virtualization experiences. If you do not already have one, Microsoft says this virtualization scenario requires a separate Windows 11 Pro license for each instance. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 options for Macs with Apple silicon for the specific scope and details.

Some PCs may ship with Windows 11 in S mode. Microsoft says S mode runs only apps from Microsoft Store. Leaving S mode is free but permanent, so confirm whether the apps you need are available in the Store and whether you are willing to make that change. Microsoft also states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; when choosing a PC or planning a migration, check that it runs a supported Windows version. A pre-switch checklist
- Test essential apps: Confirm Windows availability, required features, license terms, and the handling of your existing files and data.
- Check Apple-dependent tasks: Write down the services and device integrations you use, then verify support for each exact function.
- Review specialist work: If you develop software, check whether you need Xcode or another macOS-specific tool and whether a Windows workflow meets your target requirements.
- Verify hardware and games: Confirm compatibility for your peripherals and the particular games or applications you depend on.
- Choose the right transition path: Decide whether you are buying a Windows PC or testing Windows virtually on an M1, M2, or M3 Mac; the compatibility and licensing considerations are different.
- Plan for new conventions: Expect to learn different shortcuts and interface habits, and consider mapping shortcuts if that would help.
