If you want the closest follow-up to Ocarina of Time, play Majora’s Mask. If you would rather see a different branch of classic-era Zelda, consider The Wind Waker. For a modern change of pace, start with Breath of the Wild—then play its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom.
Which Zelda game is most like Ocarina of Time?
Choose Majora’s Mask to stay closest to Ocarina
Majora’s Mask is the natural next game if you want to remain near Ocarina of Time in the series’ story and classic-era context. Nintendo’s series overview places games after Ocarina on branching timeline paths and links to Majora’s Mask. The available official timeline information supports that broad connection, but not a more detailed account of the games’ continuity.
Want a different classic-era route?
Choose The Wind Waker for another post-Ocarina branch
The Wind Waker is another option if you want a different presentation rather than the closest follow-up. Nintendo’s series overview says the timeline branches after Ocarina of Time into Child and Adult paths and links to The Wind Waker. Treat it as a contrasting route through the broader post-Ocarina series, not as a direct continuation of Majora’s Mask.

Start with Breath of the Wild
If your priority is a later-era game on current Nintendo hardware rather than a close narrative follow-up, choose Breath of the Wild. Nintendo lists it for Nintendo Switch and as a Nintendo Switch 2 edition. The catalog can vary by market, so check the relevant Nintendo store for your region and console.

Play Tears of the Kingdom after it
Tears of the Kingdom is the next choice if you have played Breath of the Wild and want to continue from it: Nintendo explicitly describes it as a sequel and recommends catching up on the earlier game’s story. Its publisher description says, “In this sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, embark on a perilous quest to unravel the truth behind a cataclysmic event that has sent the kingdom into turmoil.” Nintendo describes an adventure across Hyrule’s land and skies. The UK game page gives the original release date as 12 May 2023; Nintendo lists Switch and Switch 2 editions in its catalog.
How can you play the classic games?
Nintendo says classic Zelda games are available through Nintendo Classics libraries with a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Which games are in the catalog depends on region and can change, so check the live catalog before subscribing specifically for a particular title. Current catalog information and platform listings are available in Nintendo’s Zelda game catalog and its 40th anniversary announcement.
