Among 1995–2005 Pontiac Grand Ams, 1998 has the lowest complaint rate in one analysis of NHTSA owner reports, while 1999 has the highest. A separate complaint site ranks 2003 worst. That disagreement means no model year is a definitive reliability verdict: use these rankings to guide questions and inspections, then judge the individual car by its records, condition, and a mechanic’s findings.

Which Pontiac Grand Am years look better or worse in the available data?

ForCar analyzed 3,410 NHTSA owner complaints for 1995–2005 Grand Ams and divided complaint totals by distinct first-11-character VIN production runs. Its results put 1998 at the lowest reported rate and 1999 at the highest. ForCar identifies 1999, 2000, and 2001 as its three higher-rate years; after excluding 1998, it identifies 1997, 1995, and 1996 as the three lower-rate years. The figures below are ForCar’s reported values, updated in September 2026.

Model year Complaints per production run Complaints Production runs
1998 1.50 132 88
1997 1.94 282 145
1995 1.96 273 139
1996 2.70 343 127
2002 2.72 297 109
2001 2.93 381 130
2000 3.13 523 167
2005 3.18 89 28
2004 2.47 220 89
2003 2.38 255 107
1999 5.21 615 118

The table preserves ForCar’s displayed year values rather than sorting them by rate. Its per-production-run figure is a complaint-rate calculation, not a probability that a vehicle will fail or an official NHTSA reliability rating. Owner complaints are reports, not confirmation that a defect exists, and they do not capture every failure.

Why another site says 2003 is the worst year

CarComplaints uses its own complaint data and ranking method. It ranks 2003 as the worst Grand Am year and engine problems as the worst category, while its displayed model-year comparison shows 378 complaints for 2001 and 187 for 2003. The site explains that its ranking can account for factors beyond raw totals, such as repair cost or lower mileage. These figures do not match ForCar’s extract and groupings, so the two rankings should not be combined into a single score.

In practical terms, treat 1998 as a potentially promising year to investigate—not as a guarantee—and give a 1999, 2000, 2001, or 2003 extra scrutiny rather than automatically ruling it out. A well-maintained car with a clean inspection can be a better choice than a neglected example from a more favorable year.

What problems should you check before buying?

Inspect the engine and cooling system for leakage

CarComplaints highlights reports of intake-manifold leakage on 2003 Grand Ams, coolant leakage or cracked intake-manifold gaskets on 2001 models, and intake-manifold gasket failure on 2000 models. These are reported complaint patterns, not defects every car of those years will have. A mechanic should look for signs of coolant or other leakage and assess the engine and cooling system on the specific vehicle.

Check the whole vehicle, not just the engine

For a decades-old car, model year is only one clue. Review service documentation and look for rust, structural damage, and evidence of previous crash repairs. An independent pre-purchase inspection can identify condition issues that a year-level complaint ranking cannot.

How to compare two Grand Ams

  1. Compare the records. Prefer documentation that shows what maintenance and repairs were performed, rather than relying only on the seller’s description.
  2. Inspect for leakage and physical damage. Have the engine and cooling system checked, and assess rust, structural condition, and prior repairs.
  3. Read diagnostic trouble codes when appropriate. RepairPal provides Grand Am diagnostic-code resources and year-level problem information. An OBD-II reader can retrieve codes, but a code is a clue to investigate—not a root-cause diagnosis or proof that the car is roadworthy.
  4. Check recalls by VIN. Use the specific vehicle’s VIN to check current recall status; a model-year summary cannot establish whether a particular car has an open recall.
  5. Use complaint patterns as tie-breakers. If two cars are otherwise similar, their model years can help shape follow-up questions, but the inspection and the cars’ actual condition should carry more weight.

Sources and limits of the rankings

None of these year-level complaint pages is a vehicle inspection or a complete VIN-specific recall determination. Their data can help you decide what to ask about, but they cannot establish that a particular Grand Am is trouble-free.
