There is no single best wife in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: the right choice depends on which quests you have completed, where you want your spouse to live, and which character you prefer. Aela suits players already working through the Companions, Lydia fits Whiterun progress and owning Breezehome, and Mjoll offers a Riften route tied to a specific quest. Ysolda and Brelyna are alternatives with their own unlock tasks.
Which wife should you choose?
Use unlock effort and location as practical filters, not as a claim that one spouse is objectively stronger. The available guide describes marriage routes and benefits, but does not establish a numeric ranking of combat ability or overall performance.

How Skyrim marriage works
The marriage process requires both the general Mara-related steps and the individual candidate’s condition. The guide, updated May 20, 2024, describes this sequence:

- Wear the amulet and speak to the candidate to propose.
- Return to arrange the ceremony, then attend the wedding.

What marriage can provide

What to know about Serana and candidate counts
Do not assume Serana is a standard marriage option: the cited marriage guide links to separate Serana coverage but does not list her among its main candidates.
