Gears of War: E-Day has not launched as of October 3, 2026, so there are no verified live-build results to support a definitive tier list. Based on the Coalition’s official pre-launch weapon descriptions, the Gnasher is the strongest provisional close-range Versus pick, the Breechshot offers the most explicit precision payoff, and the Prototype Lancer looks like the most adaptable rifle. Treat these as role-based recommendations—not measured rankings—and expect the picture to change after release.
How to read this E-Day weapon ranking
The ranking weighs the Coalition’s stated weapon roles and handling traits, not damage tests, win rates, or hands-on match results. The official Xbox listing gives the release date as October 6, 2026, three days after this article’s October 3, 2026 cutoff. The order below is therefore provisional. (Xbox release listing)
Mode matters. Versus gives players the same starting loadout and disables weapon mods; teams contest Power Weapons found on the map. Horde Siege supports weapon mods and class progression, which can change how a weapon fits a build. Campaign weapon mods are described in official material, but there is not enough comparative campaign data to rank guns for that mode separately. (The Coalition’s multiplayer overview)

Best E-Day weapons, ranked provisionally
-
Gnasher: best provisional close-range Versus pick
The Coalition uses sliding into a close-range “gib” as its example of the Gnasher’s role. Its capacity is six shells, down from the previous eight, and it supports round-by-round active reload: you can load one or two shells without completing a full reload cycle. That combination makes it the clearest close-quarters choice in the pre-launch descriptions, though its live-build performance remains unverified. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)

-
Breechshot: best provisional precision payoff
The Coalition says the Breechshot returns with a one-shot headshot kill in PvP and gains round-by-round active reload. That is the strongest explicit precision claim among the listed weapons, but the description does not compare its fire rate, ammunition economy, or practical hit rate with other guns. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)
-
Prototype Lancer: best all-round rifle candidate
The developer calls the Prototype Lancer “a great all round rifle,” citing a higher rate of fire and deeper magazine than recent Lancers. That makes it a sensible adaptable starting choice on paper; it does not establish that it outperforms specialist weapons in every fight. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)

-
Hammerburst: burst-fire precision option
The Hammerburst fires an accurate six-round burst, and a perfect active reload increases its rate of fire. It may suit players who can place deliberate bursts, but official descriptions provide no comparative damage or time-to-kill figures. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)

Lancer MK1 (Retro Lancer): high-risk close-to-midrange rifle
The official description calls it deadly up close and usable at mid-to-long range if the shooter can control its strong recoil. That trade-off makes it a skill-dependent alternative, not a straightforward upgrade over the Prototype Lancer. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)

Snub: fast-draw cleanup sidearm
The Snub fires as fast as the trigger can be pulled and is quick to draw and stow. The Coalition describes it as a deadly cleanup weapon, making it a likely option for finishing a weakened opponent or switching quickly rather than replacing a primary gun. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)
-
Smoke Grenade: tactical repositioning tool
Its volumetric smoke blocks player and AI sightlines, giving you cover to reposition or charge. It belongs in a utility discussion rather than a direct damage ranking against guns. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)

Heavy Boomshot: situational high-impact heavy
The Heavy Boomshot is described as the Locust’s Prototype Boomshot. Its heavier kick is presented as a balancing choice, and carrying a heavy slows movement, although most movement remains possible. The pre-launch descriptions do not establish where it is available or how its impact compares across modes, so its placement is necessarily situational. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)

Which weapon should you use in Versus?
Versus starts players with the same loadout weapons and equipment, disables weapon mods, and makes Power Weapons map pickups. Choose based on the fight you expect and the role you can execute:
Best Value
- NECA Gears of War Series 1 Action Figure Locust Sniper
- Close distance and finish quickly: start with the Gnasher as the provisional close-range pick.
- Take deliberate headshots: consider the Breechshot, whose stated one-shot headshot kill in PvP is a developer design claim, not an independently verified match result.
- Need a flexible rifle: the Prototype Lancer is the most direct all-round candidate in the official descriptions.
- Prefer controlled burst fire: try the Hammerburst if you can make its six-round bursts count.
- Need to reposition or press a charge: use smoke to disrupt sightlines rather than treating it as a gun substitute.
E-Day also uses simulated projectile ballistics and travel time, according to the Coalition; at range, you may need to lead a moving target. That makes engagement distance and aim demands part of the choice, not just the weapon’s label. (The Coalition’s gameplay update)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Horde Siege and Campaign change the choice
Horde Siege
Horde Siege adds class progression and weapon mods. Weapon parts fund mods, and the developer says some mods can change a weapon’s functionality. Judge a gun in the context of your class, mod build, mission length, and whether your squad needs to defend, move, or extract—not as an isolated entry in a universal tier list. (The Coalition’s multiplayer overview)
Campaign
Official material describes weapon mods in Campaign, but does not provide enough comparative campaign-only weapon information to rank performance there. The Versus-oriented order above should not be treated as a campaign verdict. (The Coalition’s gameplay update; The Coalition’s multiplayer overview)
What remains unknown until launch
Official descriptions establish intended roles, but not which weapon will be strongest in actual matches. No independent numerical comparison is available here for damage, DPS, effective range, accuracy, or win rate. After launch, a useful comparison should hold mode and game build constant and measure engagement distance, damage and shots to down or kill, recoil, reload cadence and active-reload payoff, ammo capacity and replenishment, mobility and time to aim, skill demands, pickup availability, and—in Horde Siege—class and mod interactions.
The Coalition’s July 31, 2026 gameplay update says all projectiles use simulated ballistics and travel time. In a June 9, 2026 Official Xbox Podcast transcript, gameplay director Matt Searcy described the intended active-reload tension: “It adds to the tension of reloading your weapon, how you manage your weapon, whether or not you’re going to jam it, get extra damage.” That comment explains the design intent; it is not an independent performance finding.
