Choose an Ascension Shard farm by the power level you need. For Power Level 5, Fellhollow green dragons are listed as a reliable source of 15–20 shards per kill. For Power Level 4, General Velgar is listed at 30–40 shards per kill and can be summoned again; Abyssal Demons are another option, with a specialist guide reporting 12–19 shards on a 40/100 roll. These are reported game drop-table figures, not firsthand measurements. Check the live Journal and Mystic Forge before a long farm, since drops and recipes can change.
What Ascension Shards are used for
Ascension Shards are crafting materials for supported Ascension Core recipes. The Mystic Forge consumes those cores to upgrade eligible Masterwork or Vestige equipment; not every piece of equipment qualifies. A current guide lists Power Level 4–6 core recipes that each require 99 shards of the matching tier, alongside tier-specific bars, leather and cloth. The guide also reports a Power Level 8 recipe in version 1.0. Check the live Forge and Journal if their information differs from a guide. How to choose between the routes
Match the farm to the shard tier required by your intended core recipe. For PL5, the documented route here is green dragons. For PL4, Velgar has the larger listed yield and a repeatable summon loop, while Abyssal Demons have a chance-based drop according to the specialist guide. Jagex’s official announcement confirms the Abyssal Demon Tier 4 shard reward but does not provide that guide’s exact quantity or chance. Jagex’s announcement
There is not enough comparable evidence to call any route the fastest. The available figures do not establish kills per hour, travel time, or the cost of failed or dangerous encounters. Use the listed yield and reliability to narrow your choice, rather than treating a per-kill drop as a proven efficiency ranking.

Check the live Forge before farming
- Confirm the power level of the shard material you need in the Journal or Mystic Forge.
- Open the Forge and check the current Ascension Core recipe. The cited PL4–6 recipes require 99 matching shards plus other tier materials, so verify the full cost before setting a target.
- Check that the specific Masterwork or Vestige item you intend to upgrade appears in the Forge’s ascension interface.
- Do not farm PL7 shards for an old shard-to-core recipe screenshot. A current guide says the visible PL7 recipe was unintended and removed in version 1.0; it says PL7 cores come directly from the Nightmare Crucible. Follow the live game if it differs from that guide.
