The best virtual keyboard is the one that works with your device, apps, language and preferred way of typing—not a single universal winner. Start with the keyboard built into your operating system; add another only if it supports a layout or input method you need and is allowed in the places you type.
What a virtual keyboard does
A virtual keyboard is software that lets you enter text on a screen. Android calls its on-screen keyboard a “soft input method”: it can appear when a text field receives focus, and an app can tell the system what kind of input it expects, such as an email address or phone number. Apps can also request behaviors such as autocorrect or a keyboard action like Done or Next. Android’s input-method documentation explains this system model.
A virtual keyboard is not always the best input tool. On a tablet or other large-screen device, an attached hardware keyboard may be more practical; Android supports hardware keyboards as well as soft input methods. On a touchscreen computer, the on-screen keyboard can be useful when there is no physical keyboard attached or when touch or pen input better fits the task.

Android: built-in keyboard and Gboard
Android supports different soft input methods, so available keyboards and settings depend on the device and its software. Google’s Gboard Help covers features and settings such as changing languages, swipe typing, voice typing, translation as you type, handwriting and writing tools. Treat these as documented Gboard capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature works on every device, in every language or in every app.
#1 Best Overall
- Connect in seconds: Fast, easy Bluetooth wireless technology simply connects without the need for a dongle or USB port
- Durable and reliable: Built for quality, K250 offers long-lasting keys, a spill-resistant design (2)

Before switching, check whether your current keyboard can be configured for the language, layout or input style you want. If you need an external keyboard for a tablet or large screen, consider that separately from the on-screen keyboard choice.
iPhone and iPad: Apple’s keyboard or a custom keyboard
iOS and iPadOS let users install and enable third-party keyboard extensions, select more than one keyboard and switch between them. Apple’s guidance says a custom keyboard can be used in app text fields except secure text fields and phone-number fields; an app can also prohibit third-party keyboards. Apple’s custom-keyboard extension model is not supported in macOS.

Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for virtual keyboards also recommend matching the layout to the task—for example, a number-and-punctuation layout for numeric entry—and state that “A virtual keyboard doesn’t support keyboard shortcuts.” That is Apple platform guidance, not a universal performance comparison of all software keyboards.
Windows touchscreen computers: choose a touch layout
Microsoft documents five touch-keyboard layouts in its Windows touch keyboard guide. The right one depends on how you hold the device and what you are entering:

Microsoft notes that some layouts are unavailable in some languages and swipe typing is not available in all languages. The guide also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; use current Windows support guidance for lifecycle questions rather than treating older Windows 10 instructions as current support advice. Microsoft distinguishes the touch keyboard from the Windows On-Screen Keyboard in its keyboard interaction guidance.
How to choose a virtual keyboard
- Check platform and app compatibility. Confirm the keyboard is built into or installable on your operating system and works in the apps and fields you use. On iPhone and iPad, Apple custom keyboards cannot be used in secure text fields or phone-number fields, and an app may block them.
- Verify the exact language and layout. A language may have multiple layouts, and feature availability can vary by device, app and language. Check the specific language you need rather than assuming that a listed feature is universal.
- Match the input style to the task. Tap typing, swipe gestures, voice input and handwriting are distinct options. Choose only among methods documented for your keyboard and available in your language and app.
- Consider screen space and posture. Larger keys, a split layout or a movable compact keyboard can change how the screen feels to use. These are ergonomic choices, not proof that one layout produces faster or more accurate typing.
- Decide whether you need on-screen entry at all. If you regularly type long passages on a large screen, an external hardware keyboard may suit the task better; a virtual keyboard remains useful when touch, pen or accessibility needs make it preferable.
- Review privacy disclosures and permissions. Understand the platform’s controls, then check the keyboard provider’s own disclosures and the permissions it requests. A platform sandbox does not replace reviewing an individual keyboard’s practices.
What Apple’s custom-keyboard security controls mean
Apple says custom keyboards are extensions enabled system-wide and, by default, run in a restrictive sandbox that blocks network access, network-operating services and APIs that could allow typing data to be exfiltrated. A developer can request Open Access, which requires user consent. Apps can also prohibit third-party keyboards. These are Apple platform controls; they do not establish how keyboards on other platforms handle data or describe the practices of any particular provider. See Apple’s security documentation.

When a stylus makes sense
A touchscreen stylus is an optional accessory for someone who prefers handwriting on a compatible device. Microsoft documents that the Windows handwriting panel accepts a pen or fingertip, but that does not establish compatibility for a particular stylus and device. Check the device maker’s compatibility guidance before buying; a stylus is not a general typing upgrade.

The platform documentation establishes available behaviors and constraints, not a comparable winner for speed, accuracy, popularity or user satisfaction.
