For a conventional touchscreen laptop, Tom’s Guide names the Dell XPS 14 (2026) its best pick for most people. If you want a 2-in-1, RTINGS names the LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 (2026) its best tested convertible. Those are different categories, and neither is a universal winner: screen size, tablet handling, workload, and accessory needs should decide which design fits you.
This guide compares the current picks and explains what to check before buying. The judgments and specifications below are attributed to their reviewers or manufacturers; battery results from different publications are not directly comparable.
Best touchscreen laptops in 2026 at a glance
| Use case | Pick | Why it stands out | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional touchscreen laptop | Dell XPS 14 (2026) | Tom’s Guide’s pick for most, with a 14-inch 2.8K OLED touchscreen and compact premium design. | Tom’s Guide notes the relatively small screen and lack of a microSD slot. |
| Large convertible 2-in-1 | LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 (2026) | RTINGS’ best tested convertible in its October 1, 2026 update; vivid OLED, 120Hz refresh rate, and battery life it describes as lasting a normal workday. | RTINGS reports heat and reduced performance under demanding workloads; its 16-inch size is awkward to hold as a tablet. |
| More compact OLED convertible | Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition 14 (2025) | A 14-inch OLED convertible; RTINGS says its smaller format is easier to carry than the 16-inch LG. | Tom’s Guide describes performance as less compelling for the price it cited; price and availability vary. |
| Detachable tablet-first 2-in-1 | Microsoft Surface Pro | Microsoft positions it for touch, keyboard, and Surface Slim Pen workflows. | Confirm the exact generation’s accessory compatibility and whether keyboard and pen are included. |
“Best” here means a reviewer’s recommendation for a stated category, not a result from one shared test of every model.
What kind of touchscreen laptop do you need?
Traditional clamshell
A clamshell keeps its keyboard attached in the usual laptop position. It is the straightforward choice if touch is useful for navigation, but you do not expect to use the computer as a handheld tablet. Microsoft describes its Surface Laptop as a traditional laptop design with a touchscreen and built-in keyboard; its broad performance claims are manufacturer claims, not independent benchmark results.

Convertible 2-in-1
A convertible keeps the keyboard attached and rotates the display around a 360-degree hinge. It can switch between laptop and tablet modes without separating parts, and the attached keyboard makes it stable for ordinary laptop use. The compromise is bulk: when folded back, the keyboard remains behind the screen, and larger models can be unwieldy to hold.
Detachable 2-in-1
A detachable separates its display from a magnetic keyboard and typically uses a kickstand. That makes the screen easier to hold as a tablet, but the kickstand-and-keyboard arrangement is generally less suitable on a lap than a conventional laptop base. Microsoft presents Surface Pro as this kind of device, supporting touch, keyboard, and Surface Slim Pen workflows.
WIRED’s 2026 2-in-1 guide captures the design trade-off: “Of all the models I’ve tested, no 2-in-1 laptop is equally good at being both a tablet and a laptop.” WIRED says models tend to favor one mode or the other; treat that as its reviewer’s assessment, not a technical rule that applies identically to every user.

ENERGY STAR 9.0 certified and EPEAT Silver registered for eco-friendly computing with 65W power adapter included.
The compact premium design is the case for choosing it over a larger-screen laptop. The costs are also practical: Tom’s Guide calls out the smaller screen and absence of a microSD card slot. If your work depends on a larger canvas or that card format, those drawbacks may outweigh the portability.
LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 (2026): best tested large convertible
RTINGS named the LG gram Pro 2-in-1 16 its best 2-in-1 in an update dated October 1, 2026. It describes the OLED touchscreen as clear and vivid, and says the 120Hz panel makes scrolling and pen input smooth. RTINGS also says its battery lasts a normal workday, without establishing a directly comparable battery ranking against the other picks here.
RTINGS reports that the laptop gets hot and its performance declines under demanding workloads. It also describes the keyboard as firm and the 16-inch device as awkward to hold in tablet mode. It is therefore a stronger fit for someone who values a large convertible screen and mostly uses it on a desk than for someone who plans to carry it around as a tablet.

Tom’s Guide lists a 14-inch 2.8K OLED screen and measured 210.6% sRGB and 149.2% DCI-P3 color coverage in its review. Those figures are that publication’s lab result for this model, not a general measure of OLED laptops. Tom’s Guide says performance is less compelling for the $1,549 price it cited; that price is time- and market-sensitive and should not be treated as a current universal price.

RTINGS says the 14-inch Yoga is easier to carry than the 16-inch LG and lasts longer on battery in its assessment, while noting CPU performance and availability trade-offs. Because the publications’ battery methods are not a shared controlled test, this is a within-review comparison, not proof that the Yoga will outlast every LG configuration in every use.
Microsoft Surface Pro: detachable design
Microsoft presents Surface Pro as a detachable 2-in-1 for touch, keyboard, and Surface Slim Pen use. Check the exact generation before buying: pen and keyboard compatibility can vary, and the manufacturer page does not mean those accessories are included in every configuration. Microsoft’s performance and battery benefits on that page are vendor claims.
Microsoft Surface Laptop: conventional clamshell alternative
Microsoft positions Surface Laptop as a traditional laptop with a touchscreen and built-in keyboard. That format avoids the tablet-handling trade-offs of a convertible or detachable, but it does not turn into a standalone tablet. Treat the manufacturer’s broad performance statements as vendor claims rather than independent test results.

Other models that show why trade-offs matter
TechRadar’s separate roundup contrasts the Dell 14 Plus 2-in-1 and Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i: it reports long battery life for the Dell alongside a 300-nit IPS screen, while describing the Lenovo’s OLED display and strong multitasking alongside limited ports and less impressive battery life. Those observations and durations belong to TechRadar’s own review method and date. They should not be ranked directly against results from Tom’s Guide or RTINGS.

How to choose the right model
Match the form factor to how you work
- Choose a clamshell if touch is a convenience and you mainly type at a desk or on your lap.
- Choose a convertible if you want one attached device for laptop and occasional tablet modes.
- Choose a detachable if holding the screen as a tablet matters more than having a conventional laptop base on your lap.
Check the actual display, not just “touchscreen”
Compare screen size, resolution, panel type, brightness, and refresh rate. A 16-inch OLED at 120Hz and a smaller IPS touchscreen serve different priorities; touch support alone says little about readability, color, smoothness, or available workspace. For specific configurations, verify the listing rather than assuming every SKU has the same panel.
Size performance to the workload
Match processor, memory, and graphics to what you run: everyday browsing and documents have different demands from sustained creative or computational work. A convertible’s touch capability does not guarantee strong performance under prolonged heavy loads; RTINGS specifically reports heat and declining performance for the LG under demanding workloads.
Interpret battery claims carefully
Battery life depends on configuration, settings, and workload, and the reviewed sources do not establish a common test set across all shortlisted models. Use a reviewer’s battery result as evidence about that review’s tested device and method, not as a head-to-head ranking across publishers.

Consider how often you carry the laptop and whether you will type on it for long sessions. A large convertible may feel comfortable on a table yet cumbersome as a tablet; keyboard feel is subjective, and RTINGS describes the LG’s keyboard as firm. Inspect the port list against your peripherals and memory-card needs: Tom’s Guide notes that the XPS 14 lacks a microSD slot, while TechRadar flags limited ports on the Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i.
Verify operating-system and app compatibility
Check whether the software and peripherals you rely on support the exact processor platform and operating system configuration. Where a model uses an ARM processor, confirm support for essential apps, drivers, and accessories rather than assuming compatibility from the touchscreen or 2-in-1 label.
Confirm pen and keyboard details
For handwriting or sketching, verify the pen standard and exact model compatibility, and check whether the pen is bundled or sold separately. Apply the same check to detachable keyboards: compatibility and included accessories can depend on generation and configuration.
