A smart TV can often keep working as a screen after you disconnect it from the internet: HDMI devices still provide their own content, and compatible TVs can receive antenna broadcasts. What you give up is the TV’s internet-dependent features, including built-in streaming apps and connected services. Disconnecting also prevents the TV from sending data over that internet connection while it is offline—but it does not erase data already collected or prove that every radio or data pathway is disabled.
What still works when a smart TV is offline?
HDMI devices
A TV can serve as a display for devices connected over HDMI, such as a game console, cable box, disc player, or separate streaming device. RTINGS reports that the TVs in its testing could be disconnected after setup and used as basic HDMI displays; that result applies to its tested sample, not every model. Check your TV’s manual for model-specific setup requirements and offline behavior: RTINGS’ smart-TV privacy and testing article.
Antenna television
A compatible set can receive local over-the-air channels through an antenna without internet delivery. The FTC says TVs made since 2007 have a digital tuner for antenna reception, but the channels you can receive depend on your location and signal conditions. An antenna does not provide premium subscription channels. See the FTC’s antenna guidance from March 2021.

Setup may be a separate hurdle
Offline use after setup is not the same as setup without internet. Roku says all Roku-branded TVs require an internet connection to complete setup; afterward, they can be disconnected and used with HDMI sources or antenna Live TV. That is Roku-specific guidance, not a rule for every smart-TV brand. Roku Support puts it this way: “After setup, your TV can be disconnected from the internet and be used without Wi-Fi to play content from HDMI sources or Live TV via antenna.” Read Roku’s TV guidance and check the requirements for your own model.

What do you lose by disconnecting it?
During the offline period, internet-dependent features may be unavailable: built-in streaming apps, online recommendations, and internet-delivered software updates. Exact behavior depends on the TV’s make and model. You can restore those features by reconnecting it, but they will then operate through the TV’s connected platform and services.
Keeping the TV offline also means you may miss software updates while it has no connection. If you choose to disconnect for an extended period, consider how you will check for and install updates the manufacturer provides. The FTC’s general advice for connected devices is to update them, review privacy controls, disable features you do not use, and remove unused apps: Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home.

Does disconnecting stop TV tracking?
It stops the TV from sending data over its internet connection for as long as that connection is unavailable. That is a practical consequence of being offline, not proof that the TV never collected or stored data, that previously collected data has been erased, or that every hardware radio is disabled. The evidence does not justify a blanket claim that every smart TV records audio or behaves identically.
Connected-TV data practices vary by platform and feature. The FTC’s smart-TV workshop, held December 7, 2016, discussed viewing-data collection and automated content recognition (ACR), which can identify screen content and report information. That workshop is historical context, not a current audit of every TV: FTC Fall Technology Series: Smart TV.

Privacy controls are not always all-or-nothing
Roku’s disclosure says that when its Smart TV Experience feature is enabled, ACR can collect information about viewing through antenna and devices connected to the Roku TV. It also says turning off that feature does not affect data collected when a user streams through internet channels; those channel operators may have their own practices. This is a Roku-specific example, but it illustrates why turning off one tracking feature is not the same as stopping every data flow. See Roku’s Smart TV Experience disclosure.
LG’s statement dated September 12, 2026, describes privacy controls and voice functions on LG smart TVs. Treat it as the manufacturer’s account of its own products, not as independent confirmation of behavior across the industry. For any brand, check the documentation and settings for your specific model, region, and feature: LG: Understanding Privacy On LG Smart TVs.

Which approach fits your viewing habits?
| Approach | Privacy and convenience | Setup and feature trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Keep the TV offline; use HDMI or antenna | Reduces the TV’s internet-based reporting while disconnected. | Built-in streaming and other connected services may be unavailable. Setup requirements vary by model; Roku-branded TVs require internet for initial setup. |
| Keep the TV online and change privacy settings | Preserves smart features, but settings and data practices vary. An ACR opt-out may not stop data collection by apps or services. | Review the TV’s model-specific settings, disable unwanted features, and remove unused apps. |
| Keep the TV offline and connect an external streamer | Restores streaming convenience, but shifts the connected-platform relationship to the streaming-device provider; it is not a blanket privacy fix. | Requires an HDMI device and its own setup and account or service arrangements. |
| Use an antenna for local broadcasts | Receives those broadcasts without internet delivery. | Requires a compatible tuner and reception suitable for your location; it does not unlock premium channels. |
Choose based on the content you actually watch. If you mainly use consoles, a cable box, or local broadcasts, staying offline may be a workable way to reduce the TV’s internet connection without losing your main sources. If you need built-in apps, changing settings may preserve convenience; an external streamer is another option, but it brings that provider’s own data practices into the picture.
How to make the change with fewer surprises
- Check setup requirements. Look up the manual or support page for your exact TV model, especially if it has not been set up yet.
- List the content sources you need. Confirm you have working HDMI devices, or check antenna compatibility and likely reception for your location.
- Review privacy settings before disconnecting. Look for viewing-information, ACR, voice, and app controls in the TV’s settings. Names and options differ by brand and model.
- Disconnect the TV from the network. Use the TV’s network settings or remove its Wi-Fi connection; if it uses Ethernet, unplug the network cable.
- Test your sources. Select each HDMI input and, if applicable, run the TV’s antenna channel scan. A missing signal may be an input, cable, tuner, or reception issue rather than a need for internet.
The FTC’s broader advice is to “Disable or disconnect what you don’t use.” For a smart TV, that can mean choosing offline HDMI or antenna viewing, or keeping the TV connected while turning off specific features you do not want.
