AI’s most unexpected effect on technology work may be that it prompts some people to build a life beyond a conventional tech career. That is a hopeful possibility, not a proven pattern: exposure to AI does not mean a job is gone, and leaving tech is not automatically a better outcome.
What the idea gets right—and what it does not prove
James Anderson’s September 16, 2026 DEV Community essay treats AI-era uncertainty as a possible opening. Some technology workers, he observes, may put their skills into independent projects, small businesses, crafts, teaching, or work that combines technology with another pursuit. His argument is reflective and personal; it does not measure how often people make these moves or whether they are happier afterward. Read Anderson’s essay and discussion on DEV Community.
That distinction matters. A change in tasks is not the same as a job being eliminated, and a job loss is not the same as a freely chosen career change. The essay offers a way to think about possibility, not evidence that AI is reliably sending tech workers toward more fulfilling lives.
What labor-market evidence says about AI and work
Exposure is not a job-loss count
The International Labour Organization’s May 20, 2025 update says, “One in four workers across the world are in an occupation with some degree of GenAI exposure.” Exposure refers to work tasks that may be affected; it does not mean one in four jobs will disappear. The ILO assesses that most jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant because human input remains necessary, while acknowledging that this is not a guarantee against displacement. Displacement and new opportunities may not reach the same people
The OECD’s 2024 report says the full effects of generative AI on job creation and displacement remain uncertain. It also cautions that newly created jobs may not benefit the workers who lose jobs through automation. One U.S. occupation forecast is not an AI verdict
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected software developer employment to grow 17.9 percent from 2023 to 2033 in projections published March 11, 2025. This is a U.S. occupational forecast, not a count of current jobs, a guarantee for individual workers, or an estimate of AI’s causal effect. How to consider a change without romanticizing it
If AI-related change has you rethinking your work, the practical question is not simply whether another path sounds more meaningful. Consider what it would require and what you can learn before making an irreversible move.
- Income and benefits: Work out how a transition would affect earnings, healthcare coverage, and household obligations.
- Runway and support: Consider savings, time to explore, and the people or community you can rely on. In the essay’s comments, reader Jo Do observed that a new path feels like a choice only when there is runway, health coverage, or community underneath it. That is personal commentary, not a representative finding, but it names a real constraint.
- Retraining costs: Estimate the time and expense involved, and identify which existing skills transfer to the new work.
- Small tests: Where possible, try a project, class, freelance engagement, or other limited experiment to test interest and demand before committing to a major change.
These are decision questions, not a ranking of careers. The essay provides no comparative outcome data for its examples, and there is no basis to say that crafts, teaching, entrepreneurship, or any other path is generally safer or more satisfying.

The less visible risk: how new technologists gain experience
A separate question in the discussion is what happens if AI automates some junior tasks that once helped new engineers learn. If those tasks change, where will future senior engineers gain judgment? A commenter raises this as an open concern; the conversation does not establish that an apprenticeship pathway has already disappeared. Still, it points to a practical issue for employers and educators: learning to use tools is not the same as gaining experience in diagnosing problems, making trade-offs, and taking responsibility for outcomes.

Anderson’s most useful contribution is a question to sit with, rather than a prediction about what most workers will do: “if the path you’re on disappeared tomorrow, what’s the thing you’d finally let yourself build — or become?” It can help clarify what you want, but the ability to act on that answer depends on circumstances as well as ambition. AI may prompt some people to pursue work outside a conventional tech role; the available evidence does not show that this is a widespread or uniformly liberating result.
