Publication cutoff: 2025-era coverage; this is an editorial shortlist, not a controlled lab ranking. For a compact phone, compare the handset’s height and width as well as its screen diagonal. This guide ranks small-screen slab phones separately from flip-style foldables and explains what each pick suits. Its comparison draws on TechPP’s February 2025 roundup, Stuff’s guide published April 13, 2025 and updated September 15, 2026, and Apple’s live iPhone 16e specifications. Because the sources use different dates and methods, their judgments are not a like-for-like test.
What counts as a small phone?
There is no single industry definition of “small.” Recent guides often treat phones with screens around 6.1 to 6.3 inches as compact, a broader standard than older expectations. Screen diagonal alone does not tell you whether a phone will feel manageable: compare the body’s height and width, weight, and how you hold it.
A flip-style foldable is a different kind of pocketable phone. It folds to a smaller shape for carrying, but its screen is much larger when open. The Galaxy Z Flip 6, for example, has a 6.7-inch open display in Stuff’s roundup, so it belongs in a separate foldable category rather than among small-screen slabs.

1. Samsung Galaxy S25: the compact Android flagship candidate
TechPP’s 2025 comparison describes the Galaxy S25 as a Samsung flagship with a 6.2-inch screen and 163 g weight. It reports a 50 MP main camera, 10 MP telephoto, and 12 MP ultrawide, giving it more camera-lens versatility on paper than a dual-camera setup. Those are TechPP’s published figures in the reviewed material, not independently checked Samsung specifications.
TechPP also reports a 4,000 mAh battery and cautions that heavy users may not get a full day. That is an editorial assessment, not a result from a shared battery test across this shortlist. The S25 ranks first for readers who want an Android flagship in a relatively compact body, but confirm the exact regional model and specifications before purchase. 2. Apple iPhone 16: the standard compact iPhone option
TechPP lists the iPhone 16 with a 6.1-inch display and a dual-camera setup. It is the straightforward pick for someone who wants a standard iPhone rather than the 16e’s more value-oriented positioning or a foldable design. 3. Apple iPhone 16e: confirmed dimensions and a simpler purchase check
Apple’s live specifications give the iPhone 16e a 6.1-inch OLED display and dimensions of 146.7 mm high, 71.5 mm wide, and 7.8 mm deep; it weighs 167 g. Those are manufacturer measurements, not an independent comfort assessment. Apple also lists the A18 chip and an IP68 rating under IEC 60529: in controlled laboratory testing, the phone was tested at a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Apple says water resistance is not permanent and may decrease with normal wear; liquid damage is not covered by warranty.
The 16e uses eSIM and has no physical SIM-card support, so verify that your carrier and region support eSIM before choosing it. Apple says the box includes a USB-C charge cable but no power adapter. If you do not already have a compatible adapter, you may need to obtain one separately. Check Apple’s iPhone 16e technical specifications and box contents.

4. Google Pixel 9a: consider the date before treating it as a current pick
TechPP included the Pixel 9a in its February 2025 ranked comparison with expected price and availability context at the time. That article is evidence of what was considered in the roundup, not proof of current stock, present-day pricing, or complete official specifications. Verify those details directly for your country before comparing it with phones that have established current specifications in this guide. Check the date and context of TechPP’s comparison.

Stuff’s guide includes the Samsung Galaxy S24, Google Pixel 8a, ASUS Zenfone 10, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, and Sony Xperia 5 V among its category picks. These are editorial selections from a page published April 13, 2025 and updated September 15, 2026; they are not verified current-stock recommendations. Stuff identifies the Zenfone 10’s 5.9-inch screen as particularly small among its choices. Its Z Flip 6 selection illustrates why folded pocketability should not be confused with a small screen: the phone opens to a 6.7-inch display.

How to choose the right compact phone
- Start with body size, not just screen size. Compare height and width, then consider weight and grip. The iPhone 16e’s official dimensions are a useful example of how to assess a handset beyond its 6.1-inch diagonal.
- Choose your ecosystem first. The iPhone 16 and 16e are Apple options; the Galaxy S25 is an Android candidate. Your existing apps, accessories, accounts, and preferred services may matter more than small differences in screen diagonal.
- Decide how much camera versatility you need. TechPP reports three rear camera roles for the S25 and a dual-camera arrangement for the iPhone 16. These descriptions do not establish which produces better photos; no common camera test is available across the phones here.
- Be cautious with battery claims. The S25’s reported 4,000 mAh capacity does not by itself predict endurance. TechPP warns that heavy users may not get a full day, but the cited sources provide no controlled cross-phone battery comparison.
- Check display and software details at purchase. The reviewed comparison does not establish comparable refresh-rate or update-support commitments for every candidate. Confirm the manufacturer’s current regional product information rather than inferring these from screen size or model tier.
- Verify availability and carrier fit. Prices, stock, regional variants, eSIM support, and carrier compatibility can change. For the iPhone 16e in particular, carrier eSIM support is required because it has no physical SIM slot.
What this ranking can—and cannot—tell you
The strongest directly documented size comparison in the sources is Apple’s iPhone 16e specification, while the S25 and other comparisons rely on figures and verdicts reported by editorial roundups. The sources span different publication and update dates, and they do not supply a common laboratory method for battery, camera, or performance. Treat the ranking as a shortlist organized by use case, not a universal winner or a guarantee of current price and stock.
