The Nokia 1100 is commonly estimated to be the best-selling individual mobile phone, with the Nokia 1110 close behind. Among smartphones, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are often grouped as the leading family. These are historical estimates, not audited totals: rankings differ in how they count variants and generations, and feature phones are included in the overall list.
Which mobile phone sold the most?
The Nokia 1100, launched in 2003, is commonly listed first, at more than 250 million estimated units. The Nokia 1110, launched in 2005, is usually placed just behind it, at roughly 248–250 million. The estimates are so close—and the underlying totals are not universally audited—that the evidence does not establish a reliable two-million-unit gap or a precise margin between them. iTechGuides’ August 2026 compilation presents these as rounded estimates drawn from public milestones, analyst estimates, industry reporting and historical data.
These leaders are feature phones, not smartphones. Because an all-phone ranking includes feature phones sold in the era when many people were buying a mobile for the first time, it is not interchangeable with a smartphone-only ranking.

Estimated all-time leaders and what each entry counts
The figures below are the estimates reported by iTechGuides in August 2026. Entries are not all single handset models: where a row combines variants or a series, its total belongs to that group rather than to each phone separately. Treat the figures as a guide to scale, not as a precise audited league table.

The lower positions should not be read as a definitive ordering: the estimates are rounded, and sources do not necessarily use the same grouping or counting rules. A separate cross-check also lists the 1100 and 1110 at 250 million each, but that list carries a factual-accuracy dispute notice; it does not settle the close comparison. The disputed list is best treated as corroboration of the broad picture, not proof of exact totals.
Why feature phones still lead all-phone lists
All-time totals span very different eras and buyer markets. The Nokia 1100 and 1110 were basic phones from a period when mobile ownership was expanding to mass-market and first-time buyers. Smartphone lists cover a narrower product category and a later market. Comparing the two without stating the category makes “best-selling phone” ambiguous.

Historical evidence supports the scale of Nokia’s sales, though not a current audited total for each model. An ETLA Research Institute report published in 2014 says the Nokia 3310, 1100 and 1200 each sold over 100 million units; it attributes that claim to a Telegraph article retrieved on July 5, 2013. The report also identifies launch years of 2000, 2003 and 2007, respectively. ETLA’s report is useful historical context, not a fresh sales audit.
Was the iPhone 6 the best-selling smartphone?
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are commonly cited as the top-selling smartphone family, with a combined estimate of about 222.4 million in the August 2026 iTechGuides compilation. That number covers both sizes together; it should not be presented as sales for the iPhone 6 by itself. As with other entries, the estimate is not a universally audited public total, and rankings can change when sources group variants differently.

Where the iPhone 17 fits
The iPhone 17’s current sales position is a quarterly result, not a lifetime ranking. Counterpoint Research’s Global Handset Model Sales Tracker placed it first among global smartphone models in both Q1 and Q2 2026, with 6% of global smartphone unit sales in each quarter. The Q2 top ten models together accounted for 26% of global smartphone unit sales; the iPhone 17 Pro Max and Pro followed the base model in the tracker’s top three. Counterpoint’s tracker insights report quarterly shares, which cannot be converted into cumulative lifetime units from those figures alone.

How to read any “best-selling phone” ranking
- Check the category: an overall mobile-phone ranking includes feature phones; a smartphone ranking does not.
- Check the unit being counted: a row may represent one model, two paired variants, or a multi-generation series.
- Check the measure: lifetime estimates, shipments and quarterly sell-through shares are different measures and should not be compared as if they were the same.
- Check precision: rounded estimates from compiled sources are not audited exact counts, even when presented in a numbered ranking.
