For hands-on repairability, the Fairphone 6 (also called Fairphone Gen. 6) is the clearest pick in the available evidence. iFixit’s 2025 assessment highlights its modular design and adhesive-free screen and battery repairs, while Fairphone provides parts and repair instructions. The HMD Skyline is a credible alternative, though its battery uses mild adhesive and the available information does not establish that it matches the Fairphone across repairability measures.
Neither repairability nor a high score alone settles which phone is right for you. Check the exact model’s repair procedures, parts access in your country, network compatibility, current price and software-support commitments before buying.
Best repairable phones at a glance
| Phone | What makes it repair-conscious | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Fairphone 6 / Fairphone Gen. 6 | iFixit’s 2025 assessment describes substantial modularity and adhesive-free screen and battery repairs. Fairphone’s help page lists replaceable batteries, screens, ports and cameras, with repair guides. | Parts availability can vary by country and over time; verify current stock and the procedure for the repair you plan to do. |
| HMD Skyline | iFixit praises its opening mechanism and says HMD offers parts and instructions for common repairs. | The battery has mild adhesive that requires extra effort to remove and clean. The available evidence does not establish parity with the Fairphone 6. |
| Google Pixel 10 and 2025 iPhone models | iFixit notes parts and instructions, and reports improvements to Pixel 10 battery and charge-port repairs compared with earlier models. | Adhesives and, for the iPhones, screw variety remain tradeoffs. These are alternatives for people prioritizing mainstream ecosystems, not the most modular picks in this shortlist. |
These are repairability-led comparisons, not a ranking of camera quality, performance, value or overall phone experience. The cited assessments do not provide a like-for-like basis for those comparisons.

iFixit’s 2025 assessment describes Fairphone 6 screen and battery repairs as adhesive-free and says they take only a few minutes. It also characterizes the phone as easy to disassemble and substantially modular, with repair parts and instructions available from Fairphone. Fairphone’s Fairphone Gen. 6 help page lists replaceable batteries, screens, ports and cameras, and links to repair guides.
#1 Best Overall
- Privacy smartphone
- Privacy Fairphone
- Compatible with T-Mobile and its MVNOs
- Compatible with T-Mobile and its MVNOs. This phone isn't compatible with Verizon network.
That combination matters for self-repair: a component that can be removed without fighting strong adhesive is only part of the job; the right replacement part and a clear, model-specific procedure matter too. The manufacturer’s help page is a practical starting point, but it is not a guarantee that every part is in stock in every country at the moment you need it.
HMD Skyline: a credible alternative
iFixit describes the HMD Skyline as having an easy opening mechanism and prioritizing screen and battery repairs. It also says HMD support offers parts and instructions for common repairs. The battery’s mild adhesive takes extra effort to clean and replace, so battery work is not entirely adhesive-free. The available assessment supports considering Skyline, but not treating it as equivalent to Fairphone 6 across all repair dimensions.

How to compare repairability before buying
Look beyond a single score or the phrase “repairable.” Compare the parts of the repair process that affect the work you expect to do:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Opening and adhesive: Find out how the phone opens and whether screen or battery work involves adhesive. Adhesive-free access generally means fewer obstacles, but does not by itself establish that a repair is simple.
- Replaceable components: Check which parts are designed to be replaced, such as the battery, screen, ports or cameras. A modular design can make some jobs more direct than replacing a larger assembly.
- Parts and instructions: Confirm the manufacturer provides both compatible replacement parts and a guide for the exact model and repair.
- Local availability and fit: Check parts access in your country and confirm the precise model works with your carrier or network.
- Other buying priorities: Compare current price, durability and software-support commitments separately. The repairability evidence here does not establish those details for the candidate phones.
What iFixit repairability scores can—and cannot—tell you
iFixit’s scores are its own teardown-based evaluations, not a universal standard. The site says its scoring rubric is updated, so a score from one model or year should not automatically be compared with an older score as though both used identical criteria. Read the model’s scorecard and its version, then consider the specific repair notes, parts and instructions alongside the score.
Rank #3
- Unlocked for GSM Carriers like T-Mobile and not compatible with Verizon, Sprint, and US Cellular. Dual SIM (nano-SIM + eSIM) both 5G enabled
- Android 15 (Software updates until 2033)
- 6.31" inch, Full HD LTPO P-OLED, 1116x2484 resolution, 431ppi, Gorilla Glass 7i
- 10-120 Hz refresh rate, 240 Hz touch screen sample rate
- 256GB UFS3.1 storage, microSD up to 2TB external storage capacity, 8GB LPDDR5 RAM
For example, iFixit’s current score page notes that Pixel 10 battery and charge-port repairs are easier than on prior models and that parts and instructions are readily available, while also noting adhesive-secured components. Its 2025 iPhone entries similarly report manufacturer parts and instructions alongside tradeoffs including varied screws or adhesive. Those details can help mainstream-phone buyers assess service access, but do not make these devices as modular as the Fairphone 6 in the reviewed evidence.
What the EU repairability label means
For covered smartphones and tablets sold in the EU, rules apply from 20 June 2025. The European Commission’s smartphones and tablets policy page explains that the EU label assigns a repairability class from A (most repairable) to E (least repairable), and points consumers to the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) for model-specific details. Use the label as one comparison point, then inspect the actual repair procedure and parts access for the exact model.

The Commission says covered manufacturers must make key spare parts available within 5–10 working days and for at least seven years after a model is no longer sold in the EU. It also describes operating-system update availability for at least five years after the final unit is placed on the market. These are EU requirements for covered products, not a worldwide guarantee or proof that every phone already in circulation meets them. The Commission’s 20 June 2025 announcement also says covered products must withstand at least 800 charge cycles while retaining at least 80% of initial battery capacity; that is a regulatory requirement, not a claim about every phone currently in use.
The Commission estimates that the rules could save almost 14 terawatt-hours of primary energy annually by 2030. Its 2025 announcement separately projects 2.2 TWh of electricity savings and €20 billion in consumer expense savings in 2030. These are projections, not measured results, and the primary-energy figure is distinct from the electricity-savings estimate.

How to prepare for a DIY phone repair
- Confirm the exact model and network compatibility. Check the model number, country-specific availability and carrier requirements before buying; product names alone may not identify every regional variant.
- Read the manufacturer’s repair guide for the specific job. For Fairphone 6, start with the official help and repair resources. Do not assume the steps for a battery replacement apply to a screen, port or camera repair.
- Check replacement-part availability and compatibility. Verify that the part is intended for your exact model and is currently available where you live; the presence of a support page does not guarantee current stock.
- Use the guide’s tool list. Fairphone’s repair resources identify tweezers and opening picks as common tools, but the requirements depend on the repair. Follow the particular guide rather than assuming a generic kit is sufficient.
- Pause if the procedure or part is unclear. A repairable design does not remove the risk of damaging components. If the guide does not cover your exact model or you cannot confirm the replacement part, seek manufacturer support or a qualified repair service.
Which phone should you choose?
Choose the Fairphone 6 if your main priority is a modular phone with adhesive-free screen and battery repairs and manufacturer repair resources. Consider the HMD Skyline if you want a repair-conscious alternative and are comfortable with extra battery-adhesive work. A Pixel 10 or 2025 iPhone may be worth considering if mainstream ecosystem and parts-and-instructions access matter more than maximizing modularity.
Before deciding, check the repair guide, local parts supply, network compatibility and the EU EPREL listing if you are buying a covered model in the EU. The evidence cited here does not settle current price, regional stock, long-term software-support dates for each candidate, or camera and performance differences.
