The best projector depends first on your room, screen size, and placement—not just its resolution or price. For a dedicated home theater, TechRadar names the Epson LS9000; for a compact 4K option, its guide picks the BenQ GP520; and for ultra-short-throw placement, it selects the Hisense PX3-Pro. Portable buyers have different trade-offs: TechRadar favors the 1080p Samsung The Freestyle 2nd Gen, while RTINGS selects the pixel-shift 4K XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K. These are each publisher’s category picks, not a single consensus ranking.

Current projector picks by use case

The models below come from category-specific guides updated in 2026. Their rankings and specifications are attributed to the publisher that reported them; they are not results of a shared head-to-head test. Check current regional availability, pricing, and model details before buying.

How to choose a projector for your room

Start with throw distance and screen size

Throw describes the distance a projector needs from the screen to produce a given image size. Standard-throw, short-throw, and ultra-short-throw models have different placement geometry, so a projector that fits one room may not fit another. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s projection-size and distance guidance for your intended screen size and mounting position. TechRadar lists the Hisense PX3-Pro for an 80–150-inch image, but that range does not replace checking the precise geometry of your installation.

  • Measure the available distance from the planned projector position to the screen.
  • Choose the target image size, then confirm the model can produce it from that position.
  • For UST placement, check the required clearance and screen position rather than assuming it can sit anywhere near a wall.
  • Consider lens shift, zoom, and other optical adjustments if the projector cannot be mounted exactly in line with the screen. The BenQ GP520, for example, has no optical adjustments according to TechRadar.

Match brightness and contrast to ambient light

Ambient light washes out a projected image, so a bright shared room creates different demands from a dark theater. RTINGS emphasizes contrast for dark home-theater viewing, while TechRadar presents the high-brightness Epson QL7000 as a sports option for ambient-light use. Brightness figures are not automatically comparable: the TechRadar guide lists some models in lumens and others in ANSI lumens. Treat each number as that publisher’s reported specification, not a cross-model measurement made under one common method.

Understand what “4K” means

A 4K label does not always mean the projector uses a native 3840 × 2160 imaging chip. RTINGS says every model in its 2026 4K roundup uses pixel shifting. This technique shifts pixels to produce a sharper image than conventional 1080p, while remaining distinct from native 4K imaging. The XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K is described in RTINGS’ portable roundup as a pixel-shift 4K option; TechRadar lists the Epson LS9000 and BenQ GP520 at 3840 × 2160.

Check gaming features as a set

A “gaming” label alone does not tell you what a projector can do. Compare the resolution and refresh-rate combinations it supports, input lag, variable refresh rate (VRR), and the HDMI features you need. TechRadar reports 4K/120Hz and low input lag for the Epson LS9000, while RTINGS reports that the XGIMI TITAN Noir Max supports 4K at 60Hz or 1080p up to 240Hz, with VRR and low input lag. These are different modes and model-specific findings, not a like-for-like performance ranking.

Weigh setup and built-in features

Setup tools can matter as much as headline resolution if you move the projector or cannot place it perfectly. Check for lens shift, motorized zoom, autofocus, keystone correction, obstacle avoidance, integrated streaming, speakers, and the ports your devices require. These features vary by model: RTINGS highlights motorized zoom, autofocus, automatic keystone correction, and obstacle avoidance on the Elfin Flip 4K, while TechRadar notes integrated streaming and speakers on the GP520. Do not assume one projector’s convenience features are standard across the category.

Which projector type fits your situation?

Choose a home-theater model for controlled viewing

If you can darken the room and want a dedicated cinema setup, prioritize contrast, color, HDR handling, and the screen size your room can support. TechRadar’s LS9000 pick is a laser 3LCD model with HDR10+ and two HDMI 2.1 inputs, one supporting eARC. Its guide also notes that it lacks dynamic tone mapping and 3D support, and does not offer Auto Low Latency Mode. Those omissions may matter depending on your source devices and viewing habits.

Choose a compact 4K model when flexibility matters

The GP520 combines a broad listed image-size range with a compact body, integrated streaming, and speakers, per TechRadar. Its lack of optical adjustments makes placement more important, and the guide describes its color as average. It is a plausible fit when portability and an all-in-one setup matter more than fine placement control or top-tier color.

Choose UST only after checking the installation

A UST projector can sit close to the screen compared with conventional placement, which can suit a living room where a ceiling mount or long throw is impractical. The PX3-Pro is TechRadar’s UST selection and is listed for 80–150 inches, with three HDMI 2.1 ports and a 240Hz gaming mode. Check the manufacturer’s placement and screen guidance for the actual installation before deciding that the image size will fit.

Choose portable for convenience, not bright-room performance

The Freestyle 2nd Gen prioritizes compactness and flexible use, but its TechRadar-listed 230 ANSI lumens and 1080p resolution are important limitations. It is better suited to controlled lighting than a bright room. The Elfin Flip 4K offers pixel-shift 4K and more automated setup features according to RTINGS, but the cited roundup does not supply a brightness figure that can be compared directly with the Samsung’s listing.

Choose a high-brightness sports model for a different job

The Epson QL7000’s TechRadar-listed 10,000 lumens and 60–300-inch range target large, brighter viewing spaces. The guide also flags its high price and some shadow-detail loss. This is a different category of use from a compact portable or a dark-room home-theater projector, so its headline brightness should not make it a default choice for every buyer.

How to interpret projector reviews and specifications

Testing approaches and category rankings vary. TechRadar says its team evaluates picture quality under different lighting and considers peak brightness, contrast, and color-gamut coverage. RTINGS says it buys and tests projectors using a standardized methodology and publishes its test methods. ProjectorCentral says it measures real-world brightness, color accuracy, and input lag. Those statements describe each publisher’s approach; the category recommendations above should not be treated as a single shared lab comparison.

TechRadar’s separate 8K category also needs careful interpretation: its listed JVC DLA-NZ800 specification is 3840 × 2160, so it should not be described as native 8K based on that listing alone.
