The best first phone for a child may not be a smartphone. Choose the least complicated device that meets the family’s real need—whether that is calling after school, texting, location sharing, or broader app access—and decide together what limits you can maintain. A basic cell phone, child-focused phone, communication-enabled watch, or carefully configured smartphone can each be a reasonable fit for a different child.

Start with what the device needs to do

Before choosing a device, list the situations in which your child needs to reach you or someone else. A child who travels independently may need reliable calls and texts; a child who stays close to a caregiver may need no personal device yet. If the goal includes apps, web access, or social connection, consider whether those features are necessary now and whether your family is prepared to manage them.

  • Contact during travel: Prioritize dependable calls and texts, battery life, and a service plan that works where the child goes.
  • Restricted communication: Check whether the device lets parents manage contacts and whether the child can contact emergency services.
  • Location sharing: Decide whether it is useful for your family, how it works, who can see the location, and when tracking should be turned off.
  • Internet, apps, or social connection: Consider the added demands of content, privacy, purchases, and screen-time rules.

The Federal Trade Commission describes a basic cell phone without web browsing or apps as an option for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics also points to flip phones and communication-enabled watches as alternatives for children who may not be ready for a smartphone. These categories vary by model, so verify the features rather than relying on the label. FTC guidance on kids and cell phones; AAP guidance on a child’s first phone.

There is no category-wide feature guarantee. A “kids’ phone” or “smartwatch” may still differ substantially by model, service, and settings. Before buying, check each device against these questions:

Device type Calls and messages Internet and apps Contacts and location Controls and dependencies
Basic cell or flip phone Often centered on calls and texts; confirm exact capabilities. A basic phone may omit web browsing and apps; confirm the model. Confirm which contacts are permitted and whether location features exist. Check available controls, service-plan requirements, and school rules.
Child-focused phone May provide calls or messages within a managed setup; confirm who can contact the child. App and browser access depend on the model and configuration. Review location sharing, who can access it, and contact restrictions. Find out whether management requires a parent account, app, subscription, or cellular plan.
Communication-enabled watch Some support calls or messages, but functions vary. App access is model-specific and may be limited. Check contact approval and location behavior, including who can view location. Check whether setup depends on a parent’s phone, account, or paid service, and whether the watch is allowed at school.
Configured smartphone Supports calls and messaging, subject to settings and service. Can provide broad internet and app access; restrictions depend on device settings and family rules. Review contact permissions and location settings rather than assuming defaults are appropriate. Check content filtering, app downloads and purchases, screen-time tools, privacy settings, and the parent’s ability to manage them.

Use the table as a checklist, not a product ranking. The available evidence does not establish comparative independent testing of current models, carrier compatibility, total ownership cost, or retailer stock. Confirm supported carriers and bands, service or subscription fees, return terms, and the device’s current availability before choosing one.

Decide whether your child is ready for a smartphone

Age alone cannot answer whether a child is ready. The AAP recommends considering the child’s judgment and impulse control, the reason they need a phone, their peer connections, online safety, and whether parent and child can keep talking openly about digital life. Its advice is to “Treat getting a phone like an experiment.” That approach makes it reasonable to start with a limited device or settings, agree on expectations, and revisit the decision as the child shows how they handle it. AAP first-phone guidance.

In a Pew Research Center survey of 3,054 U.S. parents of children age 12 and younger, fielded May 13–26, 2025, 61% said their child had ever used a smartphone and 11% said their child used a smartwatch. Separately, 68% said children generally should be at least 12 before having their own smartphone. These are parent reports and opinions, not expert age recommendations. International figures show how common connected devices have become, not what an individual child should receive. An OECD report published in 2025, drawing on 2021 data, says 93% of 10-year-olds had an internet connection and approximately 70% of 10-year-olds owned a smartphone on average. The report also notes that much research on digital media and wellbeing is correlational rather than causal. OECD, How’s Life for Children in the Digital Age?

Make parental controls part of a family plan

“Parental controls” can refer to several different protections. Check each one separately, and confirm that the device and service actually provide it:

  • Contacts: Can you limit who contacts your child and whom they can contact?
  • Content: Can you filter or restrict age-inappropriate material, and does the filter apply to browsers and apps?
  • Apps and purchases: Can you approve downloads, limit access, or prevent purchases?
  • Screen time: Can you set schedules or limits that fit your household and school routines?
  • Privacy and location: Can you control location sharing and review what data or permissions apps use?
  • Family monitoring: What can a parent see or manage, and does monitoring require a particular account, phone, or subscription?

The FTC cautions that children may try to bypass or disable controls. Settings are therefore not a substitute for clear expectations and ongoing conversations. Agree on when the device can be used, where it should be kept, what to do about unwanted messages or upsetting content, and how your child can ask for help. Account for school, privacy, and wellbeing

A device that works at home may not be suitable at school. Check the school’s rules for phones and watches, including whether a device may be carried, worn, or used during the day. Make sure the child can follow those rules and that caregivers understand how to reach one another if the device must be put away.

Location features can help coordinate pickup, but they also share sensitive information. Discuss who can see the child’s location and when, and avoid treating continuous tracking as a replacement for trust or communication. Likewise, do not assume a simpler device guarantees safety or better mental-health outcomes. A UK government evidence summary says high-quality causal evidence linking children’s mental health and wellbeing to digital technology use, including smartphones and social media, remains limited. UK government evidence summary.

Use a trial period and revisit the choice

Treat the first device as a decision the family can review, not a one-time milestone. Start with the device and permissions that match the immediate need. Set a check-in date and ask whether it is helping, whether rules are working, and whether the child is handling the responsibility. If the device creates more problems than it solves, tighten settings, change the arrangement, or return to a simpler option. If the child is managing it well and their needs change, reconsider what access is appropriate.

Google’s February 2025 announcement described Family Link controls and named Fitbit Ace LTE and Samsung Galaxy Watch for Kids among youth products.
