RTINGS’ current top HDR-monitor pick is the ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3, a 32-inch 4K QD-OLED that the roundup praises for deep blacks, bright highlights, accurate HDR, and vivid color. That is a third-party recommendation, not an independent test by iTechGuides. It is a strong starting point, but the right monitor depends on room lighting, screen size, intended use, and how well the display handles HDR—not just whether its label says “HDR.”
Best HDR monitors in 2026 at a glance
| Monitor | Best fit | What the cited roundup says |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM Gen3 | Best overall HDR pick | RTINGS names it the top pick, citing deep blacks beside bright highlights, bright small details, accurate HDR, and vivid colors. It is a 32-inch 4K QD-OLED. Current price and regional availability are not stated in the roundup summary. RTINGS HDR-monitor guide |
| ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM | Smaller alternative | RTINGS says it performs similarly overall but is less bright than the larger ASUS pick. Current price and regional availability are not stated. RTINGS HDR-monitor guide |
| Samsung Odyssey OLED G80SH S32HG802S | High-end OLED with a matte finish | RTINGS says it competes with the ASUS top pick and uses the same panel. Its matte coating handles reflections better, while the ASUS produces clearer images. Current price and regional availability are not stated. RTINGS HDR-monitor guide |
The guide’s July 2026 update notes also name the LG 27GX700A-B and Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx as replacements in its recommendations. The available summary does not establish their current ranking or provide comparable HDR test details, so check the live guide before choosing either as a specific HDR recommendation. An HDR logo or compatibility claim alone does not tell you how convincing HDR will look. Compare the display’s black level and contrast, highlight behavior, tone mapping, and color reproduction. These characteristics work together: a high peak-brightness figure cannot compensate for weak contrast or ineffective local dimming.
#1 Best Overall
- Samsung’s 27” Odyssey G5 QHD Gaming Monitor delivers brilliant visuals and unparalleled lightning-fast action.
- QHD resolution (2560x1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
- With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers precise, radiant hues.
- 200Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (MPRT) enable fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, and AMD FreeSync Premium reduces choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
Black levels, contrast, and local dimming
Deep blacks make bright objects stand out against dark scenes. On LCD monitors, local dimming controls light in zones behind the panel; its effectiveness affects both dark areas and highlights. RTINGS cautions that ineffective local dimming can mute small highlights even on a bright screen. OLED pixels emit their own light, which is why VESA provides separate DisplayHDR True Black tiers for emissive displays rather than treating their certification numbers as directly interchangeable with LCD tiers. Peak versus sustained brightness
A tier’s nominal luminance number is not a promise that the monitor can sustain that output across the whole screen. VESA’s CTS 1.2 criteria distinguish center-patch peak tests from full-screen flash and long-duration tests. For the long-duration full-screen test, the listed LCD minimums are 320 cd/m² for DisplayHDR 400, 320 for 500, 350 for 600, 600 for 1000, and 900 for 1400. The corresponding True Black long-duration minimums are 250, 300, 350, 500, and 700 cd/m². These are certification test requirements, not generic peak-brightness readings or a guarantee of a particular real-world viewing result. VESA DisplayHDR performance criteria

Tone mapping and PQ EOTF tracking
HDR content is mastered to defined brightness levels. A display’s processing determines whether it follows the intended PQ EOTF (the transfer function that maps encoded signal levels to displayed brightness) or renders the image brighter or darker. Two monitors with the same panel can behave differently because their processing differs. Look for measured tracking information rather than assuming that a shared panel guarantees identical HDR.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteColor gamut and color volume
Gamut describes the range of colors a monitor can show at a given luminance; color volume describes how well it maintains colors across different brightness levels. A display with limited color volume can make bright or dark colors look muted even if its gamut sounds impressive on paper. RTINGS treats both as part of its HDR evaluation. What DisplayHDR certification does—and does not—tell you
Certification gives shoppers a defined performance specification to check, but the tier and specification version matter. VESA warns that a generic HDR-support claim without a DisplayHDR performance specification—or a pseudo-label such as “HDR-400”—may not satisfy its certification requirements. Check the model against VESA’s certified-product list rather than relying on marketing shorthand. VESA certified products
VESA’s current criteria summary identifies CTS 1.2, released May 7, 2024, as the latest criteria set described there. The revision tightened luminance, gamut, and bit-depth requirements and added tests for color accuracy, contrast ratio, black levels, and subtitle flicker. Older-certified displays may still be on sale, so verify the specification version attached to the exact model. VESA’s transition period for DisplayHDR 1.1 certification ended in May 2025 for monitors and May 2026 for laptops. VESA DisplayHDR performance criteria VESA’s DisplayHDR 1.2 announcement

- Dark-room gaming: prioritize strong black performance, contrast, and highlights that remain visible in small bright details.
- A bright or reflective room: consider measured brightness and how the finish handles reflections. RTINGS says the Samsung matte model handles reflections better than the ASUS top pick, while the ASUS has clearer images.
- Limited desk space or a preference for 27 inches: the ASUS PG27UCDM is the cited smaller option; its trade-off is lower brightness than the 32-inch pick.
- Creative work: check color gamut, color volume, and accuracy measurements, along with the resolution and size that suit your workflow. An HDR tier alone does not establish color suitability.
- Budget-sensitive buying: compare current local prices and verified test results. The cited recommendation summary provides no current price figures, so it cannot establish which option is the best value today.
Set up HDR in Windows and check the signal path
A capable monitor is only one part of an HDR setup. Microsoft says an external display for HDR video should support HDR10 and connect through DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, or Thunderbolt. Microsoft recommends certified displays, particularly DisplayHDR 1.2 and tier 500 or higher. This is compatibility guidance, not a guarantee that every cable, graphics device, app, or streaming service will deliver HDR correctly. Microsoft: HDR settings in Windows

- Check the monitor’s manual or specifications for HDR10 support and for the required input and cable standard.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the external HDR display, and check the HDR settings available for that screen.
- Enable HDR for the display and use Windows’ HDR controls to adjust the balance for SDR content if needed. The exact options can vary by Windows version and hardware.
- Test with HDR content in an app or service that supports it. Protected playback can also depend on hardware DRM and codecs; Microsoft’s guidance names HEVC for Netflix HDR and VP9 for YouTube HDR. Check each service’s current requirements because support can change.
If HDR does not appear or playback looks wrong, confirm the selected display, connection, and content support first; then check the graphics hardware, cable, and app or service requirements. A monitor’s certification by itself cannot validate the entire playback chain.
