There is no single best Google Photos replacement. Ente is the clearest managed choice if end-to-end encryption is your priority; Immich is the most flexible option for technically confident users who want to run their own server; Apple Photos is the natural fit for an Apple household; Amazon Photos can be compelling for eligible Prime members; and Proton Drive or OneDrive make the most sense when you already use those ecosystems.

Choose by balancing four things: how much storage you need, whether you trust a provider or want to operate the system yourself, which devices you use, and how much photo-specific organization you expect. Before deleting Google Photos, export the library, import a copy, verify it, and keep an independent backup.

What makes an alternative genuinely useful?

A replacement has to do more than accept image files. A practical photo library should back up phones reliably, preserve capture dates and metadata, find pictures quickly, create albums, share selected items, and make recovery straightforward. The right choice also depends on who is responsible when something breaks.

Storage and total cost

Google states that a personal account includes up to 15 GB shared by Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. On the US help page accessed October 13, 2026, Google lists Google One at $1.99 per month for 100 GB. Both figures are geography- and date-specific; local pricing and plan limits can differ. Ente’s comparison page lists a 10 GB free tier for Ente Photos. Other services in this guide have changing plans, regional eligibility rules, or separate photo and video allowances, so verify the current terms before moving a large library.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Privacy and encryption

“Encrypted” can mean encryption while data travels to the service and while it is stored, or it can mean end-to-end encryption (E2EE), where the provider cannot normally read the content. Google says Photos is encrypted in transit and at rest. Google also says photos and videos are not used for advertising. Those are Google’s published statements, not an independent audit of every privacy property.

Ente’s comparison describes Ente as encrypting by default, Apple Advanced Data Protection as optional, and Amazon Photos and OneDrive as not E2EE by default. Treat those statements as vendor-published comparisons rather than a substitute for a current security review. E2EE can also limit server-side search, previews, sharing features, or account-recovery options, so privacy and convenience involve a real trade-off.

Photo-specific features

Look for search that can combine people, places, objects, and dates; face grouping; automatic memories; non-destructive editing; shared albums; and collaborative workflows. Google documents natural-language-like search examples, editing, shared albums, and selective Partner Sharing. Availability can vary by country, device, account, and software version. A general file-sync service may upload every camera image yet still feel cumbersome when you need to find a particular trip.

Ecosystem and maintenance

Apple Photos is designed around Apple devices and operating systems. OneDrive is convenient when a Microsoft 365 account already stores your documents. Proton Drive is most coherent for people already using Proton services. A self-hosted platform such as Immich removes dependence on a hosted photo vendor but makes you responsible for installation, upgrades, disk capacity, network access, security, backups, and recovery testing.

Google Photos alternatives at a glance

Service Best fit Important trade-off Privacy or storage detail established by the cited sources
Ente Photos Managed photo backup with end-to-end encryption Finite storage plans; the comparison says Google remains stronger for advanced AI editing 10 GB free tier listed by Ente; encryption by default is a vendor comparison claim
Immich Technically comfortable users with a NAS or home server You operate installation, updates, storage, security, backup, and recovery Self-hosted; no hosted-plan price was stated
Apple Photos and iCloud Apple-first households wanting native sync and editing Best experience is inside Apple’s ecosystem; Advanced Data Protection must be enabled for the described E2EE benefit Shared Albums have a different protection status under Apple’s settings; no price was stated
Amazon Photos Eligible Prime members who value included photo capacity Video capacity is separate and the service is not E2EE according to the comparison Comparison describes unlimited photo storage for eligible members; confirm current eligibility and terms
Proton Drive Existing Proton users wanting encrypted file and photo backup More basic photo discovery and management than dedicated photo applications, according to the comparison No plan amount was stated in the cited material
OneDrive Microsoft 365 users who want camera uploads beside documents General cloud storage rather than a photo-first product; not E2EE by default according to the comparison No plan amount was stated in the cited material
pCloud General file and photo storage with a lifetime-pricing model Less photo-focused; zero-knowledge encryption is described as a paid add-on Current plan terms and prices were not stated

The table is a set of use-case matches, not a performance ranking. Ente publishes the comparative page and has a direct interest in the category, so its evaluations should be read as vendor claims. Google’s own storage and feature statements come from its official pages.

Detailed alternatives and their trade-offs

Ente Photos: the managed privacy-first option

Ente is the strongest fit when you want a ready-to-use photo app but do not want the provider to hold ordinary readable copies of your memories. The comparison presents Ente’s encryption as enabled by default and lists 10 GB at no charge. That makes it a straightforward starting point for a small library or a trial migration.

Aiolo Innovation 500GB External Hard Drive Ultra Slim Portable HDD-USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, Laptop, PS4, Xbox one,Xbox 360 HD-A4
  • Ultra fast data transfers: the external hard drive works with USB 3.0 thickened copper cable to provide super fast transfer speeds. Theoretical read speed is as high as 110MB/s-133MB/s and write speed is as high as 103MB/s.
  • Ultra-thin and quiet: the motherboard adopts a noise-free solution, giving you a quiet working environment. Lightweight and portable size designed to fit in your pocket for easy portability.
  • Compatibility: compatible with PS4/xbox one/Windows/Linux/Mac/Android,Stable and fast downloading on game console no difference from fast transmission when using on PC.
  • Plug and Play: no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use. The hard drive chip is wrapped with aluminum anti-interference layer to increase heat dissipation and protect data
  • Package Contents: 1* portable hard drive, 1 *USB 3.0 cable, 1*USB to type C adapter,1 *user manual, shell packaging, three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services

The limitation is capacity and feature emphasis. Storage is finite, and the comparison says Google is stronger for advanced AI editing. If your workflow depends on sophisticated automatic edits, test the destination with representative photos and videos before committing. Also check how albums, shared links, search, and exports behave with encrypted content. Encryption protects the library, but you still need a recovery method for account credentials and a second copy of irreplaceable files.

Immich: a Google Photos-style library you operate yourself

Immich suits a reader who already owns a NAS, home server, or other reliable computer and is comfortable administering software. Self-hosting can provide control over where originals live and how the system is exposed to the internet. It also avoids a recurring hosted-storage relationship for the library itself.

That control is a responsibility, not a free safety feature. You must install the application, apply updates, monitor disk health, protect administrator accounts, configure remote access safely, and maintain backups that are separate from the server. A single disk failure, ransomware incident, accidental deletion, or failed upgrade can still destroy the only copy. Plan recovery before importing the whole collection: know where an export goes, how you will rebuild the service, and how you will restore the database and media.

Apple Photos and iCloud: the native Apple household choice

Apple Photos is the natural option when most of the household uses iPhone, iPad, and Mac hardware. Native camera-roll integration, editing, library synchronization, and sharing reduce friction because the operating system already understands the library. It is particularly convenient when family members want to browse and edit without learning a separate application.

Apple’s Advanced Data Protection must be turned on for the described end-to-end-encryption benefit; it is not the default assumption you should make for every account. Shared Albums have a different protection status, so do not treat an invitation link as equivalent to a private, E2EE library. Check the device and account requirements before enabling stronger protection, and make sure trusted recovery contacts or recovery keys are documented. The cited material does not establish a current plan price, so check the iCloud storage screen for your country.

Amazon Photos: useful when Prime eligibility already covers you

The comparison describes unlimited photo storage for eligible Prime members, which can make Amazon Photos attractive when your household already pays for that membership. Confirm that your account and country qualify and read the current terms before treating the benefit as permanent. Video capacity is separate, so a library containing many phone videos can still require another plan.

  • TOUGH & TRUSTED: Files stay secure, no matter the terrain; Samsung's flash memory technology makes the Type-C a trustworthy drive to store your valuable data; It's waterproof, shock-proof, magnet-proof, temperature-proof, and X-ray-proof body, plus it's backed by a 5-year limited warranty

The same comparison says Amazon Photos is not end-to-end encrypted. That may be acceptable if convenience and included capacity matter more than provider-inaccessible encryption. If you use it, keep an independent export rather than assuming an included benefit is a complete backup strategy.

Proton Drive: encrypted storage inside an existing Proton account

Proton Drive is a logical choice for people already invested in Proton’s encrypted mail and storage ecosystem. It can keep backup and sharing in one account and may reduce the number of providers handling personal files.

For a large, long-lived photo collection, the comparison characterizes its discovery and management tools as more basic than those of dedicated photo apps. Check whether the current clients provide the search, face grouping, memories, album behavior, and mobile background uploads your household expects. The cited material does not specify a plan amount, so use the current regional pricing page when calculating total cost.

OneDrive: practical for Microsoft 365 users

OneDrive is convenient when documents, family files, and camera uploads already live in a Microsoft account. Keeping photos beside other files can simplify sharing and desktop access, and the existing subscription may make incremental storage less expensive than maintaining another provider.

It is general cloud storage rather than a photo-first service. The comparison says it is not E2EE by default, so it does not meet the same privacy model as a service that encrypts before the provider can access content. Test automatic camera upload on every phone in the household, especially when battery-saving settings or cellular-data restrictions are enabled.

pCloud: general storage with a lifetime-pricing angle

pCloud may appeal to readers who want one place for photos and other files and who are considering a lifetime-pricing model instead of an indefinite subscription. The comparison describes it as less photo-focused than dedicated libraries and says zero-knowledge encryption is a paid add-on.

What you keep by staying with Google Photos

Google’s official product page describes search, editing, organization, backup, shared albums, and Partner Sharing. Search can accept natural-language-like requests, but Google notes that feature availability may vary by country, device, and account. Those tools are why many people prefer a managed service even when they are considering a more private or self-hosted alternative.

Google says Photos content is encrypted in transit and at rest and that photos and videos are not used for advertising. These statements explain Google’s stated protections; they do not mean the service provides end-to-end encryption by default. If a provider-held decryption capability is outside your threat model, compare an E2EE service or a self-hosted design instead.

Storage policy matters even if you never migrate. Google says an account can have photos deleted after two or more years of not using Google Photos, with an email at least three months beforehand and an opportunity to keep the library active by using Photos again. Google also warns that Photos content might be deleted if the account remains over its storage limit for two years. Read the current policy and keep an export and second copy rather than relying on an inactivity email.

Move from Google Photos without losing memories

Migration is a verification project, not a one-click promise. Album structures, edits, face groupings, sharing permissions, and metadata may not transfer identically between services. Keep the original library until you have checked the destination.

  1. Measure the library. Note the approximate number of photos and videos, total size, largest files, and the albums you cannot recreate from memory. Separate personal originals from duplicates if you already know which copies are safe to remove.
  2. Create an export. Use Google Takeout or the appropriate Google download route. Choose the complete Photos library or clearly defined date ranges, and retain the exported files exactly as downloaded until verification is complete.
  3. Prepare the destination. Create the account, enable the intended security controls, install the mobile and desktop clients, and confirm there is enough storage for the import plus future uploads. For Immich, finish the server, backup, and recovery design before exposing the library to the network.
  4. Import a copy. Upload the export rather than moving or deleting the Google originals. If the destination offers an importer, follow its instructions; otherwise upload in manageable batches so failures are visible and repeatable.
  5. Check representative media. Open photos from different years, phone models, cameras, and file formats. Test short and long videos, edited images, screenshots, scans, burst shots, and files with time-zone-sensitive capture dates.
  6. Check organization. Compare several album counts and names, verify capture dates and locations, inspect metadata, and test search, face grouping, shared links, collaborative albums, and downloads. Do not assume an album, edit, or permission survived because the file itself is present.
  7. Compare counts and size. Where the destination reports totals, compare them with the export and the Google library. Investigate missing or duplicated items instead of guessing that the discrepancy is harmless.
  8. Keep the source during a settling period. Continue normal phone backup to one system while you resolve exceptions. Only after the destination passes your checks should you decide whether to stop Google uploads or delete anything.
  9. Keep an independent copy. Store an export on a USB external hard drive or another local destination sized for your library. One drive is an archive copy, not a complete backup strategy; a second location protects against theft, failure, and accidental deletion.

Ente’s comparison also advises confirming the import before deleting the source. Its migration guidance and Google’s download help are useful starting points, but neither promises identical preservation of every album, date, or metadata field.

Verification and failure checks

Files are present but dates are wrong

Some export workflows place metadata in sidecar files or interpret time zones differently. Compare the original and imported capture date for a sample from each camera and year. If the destination supports a bulk date adjustment, use it only after preserving the untouched export.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Albums or shared links did not transfer

Recreate critical albums manually and invite people again. A shared link is a permission object, not merely a folder name, so expect to rebuild access controls. Save a list of essential albums before migration to make this check finite.

Videos are missing or exceed the plan

Check the destination’s video allowance and upload-size limits separately from photo capacity. Export large videos to local storage, then import them in smaller batches. Do not delete the Google copy until every video opens and plays through.

Mobile backup stops in the background

Verify that the app has permission to access all photos, background activity, and the desired cellular-data setting. Battery-optimization rules can pause uploads when the screen is off. Leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power while the first backup completes, then confirm new test photos arrive automatically.

A self-hosted server becomes unavailable

Do not treat the application interface as the backup. Check disk health, database backups, service logs, network changes, and restore instructions. If you cannot restore a small test set, you do not yet have a dependable recovery plan for the full library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the library safe after migration

  • Use a unique, strong account password and multi-factor authentication wherever the service supports it.
  • Keep at least one copy that is not continuously connected to the same computer or server as the primary library.
  • Schedule periodic restore tests; a backup that has never been opened is only an assumption.
  • Review inactive-account and over-quota policies annually, especially when a service changes plans or household members leave.
  • Document who can access shared albums and revoke links that no longer need to work.
  • Before a major provider or server change, export a fresh copy and record the date, size, and location of each backup.

The safest decision is usually a combination: a service that is pleasant enough for daily uploads plus an independent copy you control. Pick the alternative whose trade-offs you can maintain for years, not merely the one with the largest headline storage number.
