Start with the recipient’s platform and device, then set a budget. A compatible accessory or a platform gift card is usually a safer bet than a game you guessed at. If you know which games they play and which console or handheld they use, buy for that. If you don’t, a store credit lets them choose. If they already own most of the obvious gear, shift toward the hobby around gaming: a book, a tabletop product, or a collectible tied to a game they clearly love.
Step one: confirm the platform and device
Most gaming gifts only work on one ecosystem. A controller, storage card, headset, or case can be useless on the wrong console, so confirm the exact device before you add it to the basket.

Should you buy the latest game?
Buy the game only when you can answer three questions: which title, which platform, and whether they already own it. Without those answers, a platform gift card is the more reliable choice, because it lets the recipient pick their own game, add-on, or subscription.

A gift card is digital purchasing power, not physical merchandise or hardware. It suits a recipient who likes choosing their own games. It feels thin as a present for someone who enjoys opening something, so pair it with a small physical item if you want a more personal gift.

Accessories: compatible upgrades versus novelty gifts
Accessories are the category most likely to be useful, but only when they match the device and the recipient’s habits. Treat the two groups below differently.
Practical, compatibility-checked upgrades
- Xbox audio: SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds for Xbox and Razer BlackShark V3 Pro for Xbox. Xbox Wire’s holiday guide listed these at $199.99 and $249.99 respectively; confirm current pricing.
- Xbox controllers: CRKD x Gibson Les Paul Pro Edition (listed at $134.99 and $124.99 for its two variants) and Backbone Pro – Xbox Edition, a mobile controller. Confirm which variant and which Xbox edition the listing names.
- Xbox storage: Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S (4TB), listed at $429.99. It is a large purchase, so confirm they need more space before buying.
- ROG Xbox Ally: the protective case and SanDisk microSD cards, which Xbox’s page says start at $69.99.
- Multi-platform or model-specific gear: SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Omni, Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded, Logitech G RS50, and KontrolFreek thumbsticks (named in GamesRadar+’s 2026 guide). Check the listing’s supported platforms and, for thumbsticks, the exact controller model.

Collectibles and novelty items
- Lighting and decor: Paladone gaming lights and a PlayStation ornament.
- Figures and bricks: Funko Gengar, LEGO Minecraft Chicken Jockey, and LEGO Game Boy.
- Merchandise: a Fortnite accessory locker. Good Housekeeping’s September 3, 2026 guide also lists merchandise and gadgets as gift categories, but that doesn’t mean they fit every recipient.
Novelty gifts work best when the recipient has shown a specific attachment to a franchise. A generic “gamer” item is a weaker choice than a figure or lighting kit from a series they already follow.

Match the budget to the gift type
Budget narrows the category more than the label does. Use the table as a starting point, then check current prices.

Before you buy: a checklist

- Check that the listing names the same platform and edition as the recipient’s device.
- For a platform gift card, confirm the recipient’s account platform and region match the card.
- Recheck prices, stock, and bundle contents on the live listing; guide prices change quickly.
- Avoid buying a duplicate of hardware they already have.
