Tubi is the best overall free movie-streaming service for most people in the U.S. It has a broad on-demand catalog, works on phones, computers, smart TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices, and does not require a paid subscription. Expect advertising rather than a monthly bill.

Choose Pluto TV, Sling Freestream, or Xumo Play if you prefer live channels and scheduled movie programming. Choose Kanopy or Hoopla if you have a participating library card or university login; they can provide better films and fewer commercial interruptions. For a particular movie, the fastest method is to search the U.S. JustWatch movie guide, set Price to Free, and then confirm the result on the provider’s own site before pressing play.

This guide covers U.S. availability checked against current service information on August 9, 2026. Catalogs, advertisements, device support, geographic availability, and app labels change frequently, so no service can promise that a particular movie will remain free.

Quick comparison: the best free movie services

“Free” does not always mean the same thing. Commercial services are generally free with ads; Kanopy and Hoopla are funded through libraries or universities; and public-domain collections are free because the relevant rights have expired or the material has otherwise been made available. The table separates those models so you can choose the service that actually fits your needs.

What counts as a genuinely free movie service?

A service belongs on this list when it lets you watch a complete movie without paying a rental fee, buying the film, starting a recurring subscription, or entering a free trial that automatically converts to a paid plan.

  • Ad-supported streaming: You watch without a subscription, while the service pays for licensing and operations through advertising.
  • Library- or university-funded access: Your institution pays for the digital loan or catalog access. You may need a library card, a university login, tickets, or monthly borrowing credits.
  • Public-domain viewing: Some older films are available because copyright has expired or the material is otherwise legitimately offered for public use.
  • Temporary promotions: These may be useful, but they should be labeled as promotions rather than described as a permanent free service.

A paid subscription with a few previews, a free trial, a rental discount, or a movie trailer is not the same as free movie streaming. Peacock, for example, currently presents paid plans: its $7.99-per-month Select tier excludes movies, while movie access is listed with higher paid tiers on its current movie plans page. It should not be treated as a generally free movie service for new users.

The best free streaming services, reviewed

1. Tubi: best overall for on-demand movies

Tubi is the easiest first choice when you want to pick a movie and start it immediately. Its catalog includes studio-library and independent content from partners such as MGM, Lionsgate, Paramount, and other distributors. Its genre depth is particularly useful for action, horror, documentaries, family movies, Black cinema, and older studio films.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tubi describes the service as free and legal, does not require credit-card information, and supports advertising-funded playback. It works through a web browser and official apps for platforms including Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Samsung TVs, Sony TVs, and other supported devices. Check the official device list for your particular TV or operating-system version rather than assuming every smart TV is supported.

There is also a live-TV section. Tubi’s U.S. lineup currently lists more than 260 unique live channels, but that figure should not be confused with the size or quality of its on-demand movie catalog. The on-demand library is the reason to choose Tubi for a specific film.

Ads interrupt movies, and titles leave or enter the service as licensing changes. You can often browse without creating an account, while an account adds features such as history, a queue, and personalization. To find a film, use the search bar on the web, the Browse or Explore magnifying-glass area on mobile, or Search in the left-side TV navigation. Tubi explains its current search flow in its search instructions.

For accessibility, look for the CC indicator on a title. Caption availability depends on the title and content partner, and caption controls can vary by device; see Tubi’s caption guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Pluto TV: best for live channels plus movies

Pluto TV is the closest free alternative to traditional cable. It offers hundreds of live channels alongside thousands of on-demand movies and television titles. You can browse themed movie channels, wait for a scheduled film on a live channel, or select an on-demand title when the catalog provides that option.

The difference matters: a live movie channel determines what is playing and when it starts, while on-demand playback lets you choose the title and begin it yourself. Pluto’s official on-demand page describes both sides of the service.

An account can add personalization, profiles, a kid-friendly space, and other convenience features, but the service is built around free, ad-supported viewing. Its weaknesses are discovery and repetition: the channel guide can be easier for casual browsing than for locating one exact movie, and licensing means a familiar title may disappear or move between live and on-demand sections.

3. The Roku Channel: best for Roku households and free originals

The Roku Channel combines free movies, television shows, Roku Originals, live channels, news, and kids’ content. It is a natural choice on a Roku television or player, but it is also available outside Roku hardware through the web and selected mobile, television, and streaming platforms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku describes the service as offering thousands of free shows and movies, while its support material describes more than 350 free live TV channels. These figures are catalog snapshots, not a guarantee about the number of feature films available today.

The main caution is the interface. The Roku Channel can also show rentals, purchases, premium subscriptions, or content from other providers. Check that a title is marked free before playback. Availability can differ by title and platform, so a movie visible on a Roku device may not be offered in exactly the same way on the web or another television system. See Roku’s service overview and free-content support page.

4. Fandango at Home: best free section inside a rental store

Fandango at Home, formerly Vudu, is useful when you want free movies but also want access to a large rental and purchase marketplace. Its free section includes thousands of free movies and television shows with limited commercials, and its site has dedicated areas such as Free Movies and Browse All Free Titles.

Roku Streaming Stick Plus with Voice Remote - 4K & HDR10+ | 4K & HDR Streaming Device for TV with Roku Voice Remote - Free & Live Local News, Sports
  • 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

The trade-off is the mixed storefront. A recognizable movie may sit beside a rental or purchase listing, and the newest title in search results is not necessarily the free one. Before selecting a button, verify that the page says Free, Stream Free, or equivalent. Do not enter payment information just to “unlock” a movie that is supposed to be free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fandango at Home is available through the web and supported apps. Account requirements can vary by device and playback flow. Downloads associated with purchased movies should not be interpreted as offline downloads for the free catalog.

5. YouTube Free Primetime Movies: best familiar interface

YouTube is convenient, but ordinary YouTube search is not a reliable free-movie catalog. YouTube operates an ad-supported Free Primetime Movies program in the U.S. and several other countries, and says viewers can browse the catalog at youtube.com/movies. The free catalog is updated regularly and may appear through a “free movies for you” shelf.

Use the official free-movie catalog or a verified studio or distributor channel. Search results can also contain rentals, purchases, trailers, clips, reviews, fan uploads, and full-length videos whose authorization is unclear. YouTube’s Free Primetime Movies help page explains the curated program, while its rental and purchase information explains the separate paid model.

Free Primetime Movies use ads. YouTube Premium can remove ads from qualifying free movies, but that is a paid subscription and does not make the underlying service “free without ads.” Offline playback is also associated with Premium rather than being a general feature of the free catalog.

6. Sling Freestream: best for free live TV and a large on-demand inventory

Sling Freestream is a strong choice if your idea of watching movies includes browsing a large live-channel guide. Sling says Freestream offers more than 600 free live channels and more than 40,000 on-demand shows and movies. Those are provider-reported totals that combine categories and can change; they should not be read as 40,000 unique feature films.

You can watch without an account or credit card. Creating a free account adds watchlists, favorites, profiles, parental controls, rewards, and up to 10 hours of free DVR according to Sling’s service page. DVR is not the same as downloading a movie for offline viewing.

Freestream is more television-oriented than Tubi or Fandango at Home. Pick it for live channels, news, themed programming, and a broad free catalog—not necessarily as the fastest way to locate one specific movie. See Sling’s Freestream page and Freestream FAQ.

7. Xumo Play: best when you do not want an account

Xumo Play is free, ad-supported, and does not require a subscription, account, or credit card. It combines live channels with thousands of on-demand movies. Xfinity describes the service as offering more than 300 free channels, although the exact lineup and catalog can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Supported platforms include the web, iOS, Android, Fire TV, Android TV, Google TV, Chromecast, Roku, Samsung TVs, Sony TVs, Vizio SmartCast, Xfinity devices, and Xumo hardware, subject to platform and regional restrictions. Xumo’s device support page is the best check for a particular setup.

Xumo is more channel-oriented than library-oriented. It is useful for casual browsing and free movie channels, but it may not be as efficient as Tubi when you already know which film you want. There is no paid Xumo Play tier that removes the ads. Xumo says the service is available in the U.S., in Canada through certain Rogers and Shaw devices, and in the U.K. through Sky Glass and Stream devices; do not assume the U.S. catalog travels with you.

8. Plex: best alongside a personal media library

Plex makes sense when you want free ad-supported movies and television alongside your own legally acquired media collection. Plex offers free movies, documentaries, television shows, and live channels in almost every country, although individual titles vary by geography.

A Plex account is not required for basic access, but one adds watchlists and cross-device continuation. Plex’s free catalog is separate from media streamed from your own Plex Media Server: your own files can be ad-free, while Plex-provided free content is ad-supported. Plex Pass does not remove ads from Plex’s free catalog, and Plex says those free movies cannot be downloaded for offline viewing. Its free streaming FAQ explains these distinctions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you only want free movies, setting up a personal media server is unnecessary. Also check the source label because Plex can show free streaming, personal media, rentals, and discovery results in the same broader ecosystem.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

9. Prime Video’s “Watch for free” section: the current home of former Freevee content

Freevee is no longer a separate service. Amazon deprecated the standalone Freevee brand in early 2025 and integrated its free, ad-supported movies, television shows, and FAST channels into Prime Video. Amazon says Prime membership is not required for the free titles, although the Prime Video interface also contains Prime-included programs, paid subscriptions, rentals, and purchases.

Look for labels such as Watch for free and check the playback screen before choosing a title. Do not assume that “included with Prime,” “rent,” “buy,” and “watch for free” mean the same thing. Amazon’s official FAST guide describes the Freevee-to-Prime Video transition.

Best ad-free options if you have a library card

Kanopy: best for serious film fans

Kanopy is often the highest-quality option for independent, foreign, classic, documentary, and educational films. It is funded through participating public libraries and universities, so you generally need a qualifying library card or university login. Kanopy describes its viewing experience as ad-free in the conventional commercial sense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Public-library patrons may use tickets, while university users may encounter “In Collection” and “Request Access” categories. A participating institution can also temporarily limit access for budget reasons. Catalogs differ substantially by institution, so having a library card does not guarantee that every Kanopy film will be available to you.

Use Kanopy’s search and ticket guidance to understand whether a title consumes a ticket. Check the service’s access-limit information if a title or collection is unavailable.

Hoopla: best for borrowing and offline mobile viewing

Hoopla works like a digital library loan rather than an unlimited streaming subscription. A valid card from a participating public library is required. The catalog includes movies, television, audiobooks, e-books, comics, and music, and the available titles and monthly borrowing limits are set by the library.

Hoopla says most movie titles can be downloaded to Apple, Android, or Kindle Fire mobile devices for offline viewing. Supported TV platforms include Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung televisions, and Chromecast. This makes Hoopla the most useful choice in this guide when offline mobile viewing matters. Downloads are loans and expire according to the borrowing period; they are not permanent ownership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hoopla also provides Kids Mode, which filters adult titles from search and browsing. Start with the Hoopla movie catalog and confirm participation through your library or the registration page.

If neither digital service has the movie, check your library’s physical DVD or Blu-ray collection. A library loan is still a legal no-subscription way to watch a film, even though it is not streaming.

Public-domain and historical movies: Library of Congress

The Library of Congress National Screening Room is a smaller but authoritative source for historical films, silent films, documentaries, actualities, and other preserved material. Its online National Film Registry viewing collection includes more than 550 films, while its public-domain film collection highlights selected films that can be viewed freely.

Do not assume that every old movie is public domain. Copyright depends on the work, publication history, renewals and applicable law; the U.S. Copyright Office explains the general framework in its copyright overview. A restored edition can also contain newly copyrighted elements—such as a new score, restoration work, subtitles, or other additions—even when the underlying film is public domain. Rights can differ outside the United States as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to find a particular movie for free

A list of apps is useful only until you want one specific film. Use this repeatable workflow instead of installing every service.

  1. Open the U.S. JustWatch movie guide. Go to justwatch.com/us/movies and search for the title.
  2. Set the Price filter to Free. Add genre, release year, age rating, runtime, or IMDb-rating filters if needed.
  3. Select the movie, not a similarly named sequel or clip. Check the year, poster, cast, and runtime.
  4. Choose a listed provider. JustWatch can identify free options such as Tubi and Pluto TV, but its listing is an index rather than a guarantee that the title is still available.
  5. Confirm the provider directly. Look for “Free,” “Watch for free,” or an equivalent label. Make sure the page is not offering only a rental, purchase, premium add-on, trailer, or free trial.
  6. Check a library service. If no ad-supported provider is available, search Kanopy and Hoopla using your library credentials.
  7. Try a public-domain source for older films. The Library of Congress is preferable to an anonymous full-movie upload when it has the title.
  8. Recheck when necessary. If playback requests payment, return to the provider’s free section and search again. The title may have left the catalog, the aggregator may be stale, or you may have selected a paid listing.

JustWatch is a discovery tool, not a copyright guarantee for every result. The final check should always happen on the official provider page or app.

How to watch safely

Use the provider’s official website or install its app through your device’s official app store. Legitimate free services generally do not require a special codec, an unfamiliar browser extension, an unofficial APK, a “player” download, or a browser notification permission before showing a movie.

Roku Streaming Stick 4K - HDR & D. Vision Roku Streaming Device for TV with Voice Remote & Long-Range Wi-Fi - Free & Live TV (Renewed)
  • Hides behind your TV: The all-new design plugs right into your TV with a simple setup
  • Super-fast startup: Start streaming channels like Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Netflix, Sling, and Hulu in a snap—just turn on your TV
  • Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote
  • Voice search & control: Quickly search, play entertainment, and control your streaming device with the voice remote

Be especially cautious when a site:

  • opens repeated pop-ups or redirects;
  • asks you to click Allow notifications to continue;
  • requires a suspicious download or “codec”;
  • requests a credit card to verify a supposedly free movie;
  • claims every new theatrical release is free;
  • offers a full movie through an unknown mirror, torrent index, loaded Kodi add-on, or unofficial streaming app.

The FTC warns that illegal streaming sites and pirate apps can expose viewers to malware, stolen credentials, malicious pop-ups, and compromise of other devices on the same network. Its guidance on malware from illegal streaming apps and unfamiliar movie-download sites explains the risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a VPN as the default answer when a movie is unavailable in your country. Geographic restrictions reflect licensing, and a provider may block playback when location conditions do not match. The safer solution is to find a domestic provider, library service, physical library loan, or legal rental.

Accounts, ads, downloads, and device support

“No account required” normally means you can begin basic playback without registering. It does not necessarily mean that watchlists, DVR, profiles, parental controls, cross-device history, or purchases work without an account.

  • Most convenient without registration: Tubi, Sling Freestream, and Xumo Play generally allow basic viewing without a paid account; Xumo explicitly says no subscription, account, or credit card is required.
  • Mixed free and paid interfaces: The Roku Channel, Fandango at Home, YouTube, Plex, and Prime Video require careful label checking because free content appears beside paid choices.
  • Fewest conventional commercial interruptions: Kanopy, Hoopla, and Library of Congress collections are the strongest options, but Kanopy and Hoopla require institutional access.
  • Offline viewing: Hoopla supports downloads for most movie titles on supported mobile devices. Plex says its free ad-supported movies cannot be downloaded. YouTube offline playback is generally tied to Premium, and free commercial services should not be assumed to offer downloads.
  • Smart-TV support: Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV or Android TV, Samsung, Sony, Vizio, Xbox, PlayStation, and mobile support varies by service, region, app version, and exact device model. Check the provider’s compatibility page before buying hardware or troubleshooting.

Every commercial FAST service uses advertising, but ad duration and repetition vary by title, device, time, and inventory. There is no reliable permanent winner for “fewest ads” without current, comparable testing. Do not treat a general industry estimate as a measured rate for every service.

Accessibility and family viewing

Before starting a movie, look for the title’s CC, subtitle, audio-description, language, or accessibility indicators. Caption coverage is title-specific, and the controls may be in the player, app settings, or device settings. If captions are essential and one provider lacks them, check the same title on another legal service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free catalogs mix family movies with R-rated films, horror, true crime, and mature television. For children, use Kids Mode or a child profile where available, enable device-level parental controls, and confirm the rating before playback. Hoopla’s Kids Mode filters adult titles from search and browsing, but no catalog filter should replace checking the title and rating yourself.

Common problems and practical fixes

The movie is marked free but asks for payment

The title may have left the free catalog, the aggregator may have stale information, or you may have selected a rental, purchase, or premium-channel listing. Return to the provider’s dedicated free section, search again, and verify the price label immediately before playback. If it is no longer free, check another provider, JustWatch again, Kanopy, Hoopla, or your library’s physical collection.

The app is missing from your device’s app store

Your device model, operating-system version, or country may not be supported. The provider may also offer a built-in channel rather than a standalone app. Try the official web player, a supported streaming device, or casting where the provider officially supports it. Do not install an unofficial APK or a “loaded” streaming app.

Playback is black, stalls, or fails

  1. Confirm that the internet connection works with another app.
  2. Force-close and reopen the streaming app.
  3. Restart the TV, phone, computer, streaming box, or browser.
  4. Update the app and device firmware.
  5. Try a different title; a single title can have a licensing or encoding problem.
  6. Disable browser extensions that interfere with playback and try a supported browser.
  7. Check the HDMI cable, receiver, splitter, or capture hardware.
  8. Try playing directly on the television instead of through an older intermediary device.
  9. Check DRM and content-protection compatibility.

These steps align with Tubi’s official playback and DRM troubleshooting guidance. DRM problems are particularly likely with older HDMI equipment, unsupported browsers, or capture and display chains that do not meet the service’s requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Captions are missing

The provider may not have captions for that particular title. Check for a CC indicator before playback, review the title’s language options, enable device caption preferences if required, and try another provider if accessibility is essential.

The movie is available only in another country

Do not assume that changing your location will produce a legal or reliable stream. Licensing differs by country, and services may restrict playback when location conditions are not met. Search the local version of an aggregator, your domestic library services, or a legal rental instead.

Services and claims to treat carefully

Freevee: It is no longer a current standalone app. Former Freevee content was integrated into Prime Video’s ad-supported “Watch for free” area.

Peacock: Its current movie access is attached to paid plans rather than a generally free service for new users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube: It has an official free-movie program, but not every full-length movie in YouTube search is free or authorized.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best completely free movie app?

Tubi is the best overall choice for most U.S. viewers who want on-demand movies without a subscription. It is ad-supported, and its catalog changes. Pluto TV, Xumo Play, and Sling Freestream are better if you prefer live channels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I watch free movies without creating an account?

Often, yes. Tubi, Sling Freestream, and Xumo Play support basic viewing without a paid subscription, and Xumo explicitly says no account or credit card is required. Other services may require an account for particular devices or features such as profiles, watchlists, or DVR.

Which free movie service has the fewest ads?

There is no permanent, independently verified winner because ad frequency changes by title, device, and available advertising inventory. Kanopy, Hoopla, and Library of Congress collections avoid conventional commercial interruptions, but Kanopy and Hoopla require library or university access.

Can I watch new theatrical movies for free legally?

Usually not soon after release. Free services may carry relatively recent films when licensing permits, but they are not a dependable source for current theatrical releases. Search JustWatch with the Price set to Free, then verify the provider’s listing directly.

Are Tubi and Pluto TV legal?

They are official, ad-supported services that license and distribute their catalogs. That does not make every similarly named third-party website legal. Use the official websites and apps rather than mirror sites or unofficial streaming applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Freevee still available as its own app?

No. Amazon deprecated the standalone Freevee brand and integrated its free ad-supported movies, shows, and channels into Prime Video. Look for the “Watch for free” area and distinguish it from Prime-included, rental, purchase, and premium add-on content.

Can I download free movies for offline viewing?

Hoopla says most movie titles can be downloaded to supported Apple, Android, and Kindle Fire mobile devices for the duration of a library loan. Plex says its free ad-supported catalog cannot be downloaded, and YouTube offline playback is generally associated with Premium. Do not assume an ad-supported service supports permanent downloads.

Which free movie services work with a library card?

Kanopy and Hoopla are the main options in this guide. Participation, title availability, ticket limits, borrowing limits, and supported devices depend on your public library or university. A library card alone does not guarantee access if the institution does not participate.

Can I watch these services on a smart TV?

Most major services support at least some smart TVs or streaming platforms, including Roku, Fire TV, Google TV or Android TV, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio, but exact support varies by model, app version, and region. Check the provider’s device page or use the official web player.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I find one particular movie for free?

Search the U.S. JustWatch movie guide, select the title, set Price to Free, and follow a listed provider link. Confirm the provider still labels the title free before playback. If no ad-supported option exists, check Kanopy, Hoopla, your library’s physical collection, and public-domain sources for older films.

Are free movie websites safe?

Official services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, YouTube’s curated free catalog, and the other providers listed here are safer choices than anonymous streaming sites. Avoid pages that require a codec, browser extension, suspicious APK, notification permission, or credit card to play a supposedly free movie. The FTC warns that illegal streaming sites and apps can distribute malware and steal credentials.

Why did a movie disappear from a free streaming service?

Free catalogs are licensed for limited periods and can change by country, device, and service. An aggregator may also update more slowly than the provider. Search the title again, check another legal provider, and try library or public-domain sources.

Can I watch these free movie services outside the United States?

Some services operate internationally, but catalogs and device availability are country-specific. Xumo, Plex, YouTube’s free-movie program, and other services publish different geographic coverage. Check the provider’s local site and do not assume that a U.S. listing will play abroad.

The Bottom Line

Start with Tubi for a movie you want to choose now. Use Pluto TV, Sling Freestream, or Xumo Play for free live-channel browsing; try Kanopy or Hoopla if you have library access; and use the Library of Congress for authoritative historical and public-domain films. For any specific title, use JustWatch’s Free filter and verify the provider’s label directly. That two-step check is the best defense against stale listings, accidental rentals, piracy, and fake free-movie sites.
