For a standard PDF you want readers to view inside a WordPress page, start by evaluating PDF Embedder: its free version offers a block and shortcode workflow. Choose EmbedPress if you also need broader media and document embeds or a 3D flipbook; consider DearFlip when a page-turning presentation is the point. No one option is best for every site, and a viewer is not the same as a download tracker or PDF generator.
Which WordPress PDF viewer fits your site?
These plugins solve overlapping but different presentation needs. Compare the reading experience you want with the controls and editor support you actually need. The features below are described in the vendors’ listings and documentation, not independent performance tests.
| Plugin | Best fit | What the product information describes | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDF Embedder | A conventional PDF displayed inline in a post or page. | The free plugin offers a Gutenberg block, shortcode support, responsive display, and self-hosted serving. Listed Premium features include a toolbar download control, clickable PDF links, continuous scroll, mobile full-screen mode, jump-to-page, full-text search, tracking, and watermarks. See the PDF Embedder listing. | Confirm current version compatibility and which paid plan includes any feature you need. Its listing says links inside PDFs are not clickable in the free plugin. The toolbar download button is Premium-only, although you can add a direct download link yourself. |
| EmbedPress | A site that needs PDF display as part of a broader media and document embedding toolkit. | The plugin describes PDF and other document embeds, workflows for Gutenberg, Elementor, and the Classic Editor, and a 3D flipbook feature. See the EmbedPress listing. | Check the current free-versus-paid feature split. Choose it for the broader embedding needs or flipbook option, not simply on the assumption that more embedding features make it a better conventional PDF reader. Exact current plan prices are not established here. |
| DearFlip | A site where a page-turning flipbook is an intentional design choice. | WordPress.org describes DearFlip as a PDF flipbook, viewer, and embed plugin. Its documentation has separate Lite and Premium support and a Lite-versus-Premium comparison section. See the DearFlip listing and DearFlip documentation. | Verify current Lite and Premium features and plan terms. Preview the actual document on a phone: page-turning presentation is not automatically easier to read than a standard viewer. |
Pick for reading, not just for effects
For a straightforward document, prioritize legible page sizing, navigation, and a clear way to download the file if readers need it. A flipbook can suit a brochure or visual publication, but for dense reference material, check that the presentation remains comfortable on small screens. If you need analytics, clickable links, or access deterrence, verify those exact capabilities and their plan limits before installing.

The plugin’s documented workflow uses the WordPress dashboard and Media Library. Menu labels can vary slightly by WordPress version or site configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- In the dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, find PDF Embedder, then install and activate it.
- Upload your PDF to the Media Library if it is not already there.
- Open the post or page where the document should appear. Add the PDF Embedder block and select the file in the block sidebar.
- Publish or update the page, then open the live page to review the embedded document.
In the Classic Editor or a compatible page builder, the listing documents a shortcode in this form: [pdf-embedder url="…"]. Replace the ellipsis with the PDF’s URL. The listing also says an external URL can be used if it points to the actual PDF file and the remote host permits fetching it. PDF Embedder’s listing provides the setup instructions.
Check the published page
- View the page at desktop and phone widths; confirm the document is readable and navigation works.
- Test links within the PDF and any download route you provide. The free PDF Embedder listing does not describe clickable PDF links or its toolbar download button as free features.
- If readers should be able to keep a copy, make sure the page offers a direct download link when needed.
- Check that the PDF is the intended file and that its public availability matches your needs.
What a PDF viewer does—and what it does not
A WordPress PDF viewer displays an existing PDF inside a page so visitors can read it there. That is distinct from creating a PDF from a form submission, generating a PDF version of a blog post, or making WooCommerce invoices. Those jobs call for different plugin functions; a viewer alone should not be assumed to provide them. WPBeginner’s PDF plugin guide discusses these as separate PDF-related tasks.
Viewing is not download tracking
Tracking file downloads is a separate need from embedding a viewer. PDF Embedder lists tracking among its Premium features, but verify what the current version records and which plan includes it before relying on it for reporting. Do not assume that installing any PDF viewer automatically gives you download analytics.
A viewer is not copy protection
Do not treat an embedded PDF as impossible to save, print, screenshot, or redistribute. PDF Embedder describes its Pro encryption as making casual saving or printing more difficult; its listing also says the direct file is easier to find in the free and Basic/Plus versions. That is a deterrent, not a guarantee that visitors cannot copy the content.

What to verify before paying
Plugin listings and plan features can change. Check the current product information before buying, especially if a specific capability is essential. Exact current prices and the detailed feature boundaries for paid plans are not established here, so compare them directly rather than relying on an assumed price or feature allocation.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Rank #4
- Does the plugin support your WordPress version and editor or builder?
- Is the feature you need—such as search, clickable links, analytics, or a download control—in the plan you are considering?
- Does the viewer suit the document type and work well at the phone size your readers use?
- Does the plugin’s file-serving approach meet your site’s needs? PDF Embedder describes its viewer as self-hosted and says viewer files load only on pages containing an embedded PDF; those are vendor statements, not independent performance measurements. Review its current listing.
- If you want to limit casual saving or printing, are you comfortable with a deterrent rather than guaranteed protection?
