The best fast-food side depends on what you want from it: a crisp, salty benchmark, a dish with its own signature sauce, or something substantial enough to steal attention from the main. This subjective ranking weighs flavor identity, texture, distinctiveness, meal fit, staying power, and availability context. It draws on a 2025 published ranking for candidates and market details, but it is an editorial list—not a verified sales chart or a claim of universal agreement.

How this ranking works

Fries are the essential benchmark, but a memorable side can win on more than crispness. Each entry is judged for recognizable flavor, texture, how distinct it is from a generic substitute, how well it fits a meal, and documented staying power where available. When longevity or popularity is not established, the placement is editorial judgment rather than a measured result.

Lovefood’s June 20, 2025 list considered reviews, accolades, popularity, sales, longevity, and reaction at release; its own ranking acknowledges subjectivity. The entries below use that list as a source of candidates, not proof of consensus or independently verified sales. The Ringer offers a separate example of a staff-vote approach: its staff nominated more than 100 items before a general election, with condiments excluded. This ranking is not a reader poll or a staff vote.

The 10 best fast-food sides, ranked

1. McDonald’s World Famous Fries — United States

They take the top spot because they are the fast-food side against which the rest are measured: familiar, salty, crisp, and easy to pair with almost anything on the menu. Their defining strength is not novelty but dependability. McDonald’s USA identifies Russet Burbank and Shepody among the potatoes used. Its product page listed a small serving at 230 calories when accessed in 2026; McDonald’s cautions that nutrition can vary with formulation, supply, serving size, preparation, region, and season. The fries are a current U.S. menu item, though the exact serving and nutrition details can vary.

2. In-N-Out Animal Style Fries — United States

Animal Style turns fries into a full-on menu experience, with a savory, saucy topping that makes them feel less like an accompaniment and more like a dish to share—or keep to yourself. Their appeal is the contrast between a familiar base and a distinctive preparation. They are associated with In-N-Out’s U.S. market; do not assume they are available outside its operating footprint.

3. Habit Burger & Grill Tempura Green Beans — United States

A strong ranking needs a side that is not another potato. Habit’s tempura green beans offer a crisp coating around a tender vegetable, giving them a lighter-feeling alternative without sacrificing crunch. They stand out because the format is less common at burger chains. The 2025 ranking places them third; that placement is editorial, not a measured cross-chain popularity result. Check local menus for current availability.

4. Burger King Have-sies — United States

Have-sies solve a familiar fast-food dilemma by combining fries and onion rings in one side. That mix earns its place for variety: one order provides both the straight potato crunch and the sweeter, battered onion bite. The name and availability may be market- or menu-specific, so treat this as a standout from the U.S.-leaning ranking rather than a guarantee that every Burger King offers it today.

5. Wendy’s fries — United States

Wendy’s fries make the list for their role as an everyday burger companion: straightforward, familiar, and easy to order without turning the meal into a project. They do not need elaborate toppings to make sense beside a burger. Their fifth-place position follows Lovefood’s 2025 editorial ranking; no common dataset establishes that this placement reflects a measured sales or taste-test result.

6. Chick-fil-A Waffle Potato Fries — United States

The waffle cut gives these fries an identity of their own, with ridges and a substantial shape that make them easy to dip and satisfying alongside chicken. Chick-fil-A currently describes them as crispy outside and tender inside, and lists them among its popular items. That is useful menu information, not a comparative award. They are a current U.S. option, with location-specific menu availability always worth checking.

7. Chick-fil-A Mac & Cheese — United States

This is the pick for a creamy, filling side rather than a crunchy one. It rounds out a chicken meal with a texture and comfort-food character that fries cannot provide. Chick-fil-A lists Mac & Cheese as a small-side choice in kids’ meals on its menu support page. That listing establishes a current menu presence in the U.S.; it does not mean the item is offered in every meal format or location.

8. Poutine — Canada

Fries, cheese curds, and gravy make poutine a side with the substance and richness of a meal in its own right. The appeal is the combination of crisp, soft, salty, and savory elements in a single dish. Its Canadian identity makes it an essential regional entry in an all-time list, but fast-food availability depends on the chain and location; it is not a standard U.S. menu item everywhere.

9. Onion rings — United States and other markets

Good onion rings bring a sweet onion center, a crisp coating, and a flavor that fries do not replicate. Their place here recognizes a whole category rather than claiming one chain’s version is definitively best. Availability and preparation differ among restaurants and countries, so the ranking is for the fast-food side style, not a universal menu item.

10. Tater tots — United States

Tots earn the final spot for compact, crunchy potato comfort: crisp on the outside, soft within, and easy to share or dip. They are a welcome change from fries when a restaurant offers them, but they are not a standard side across chains. This is a category-level pick, not a claim about a particular restaurant’s current menu.

How to choose the right side

  • For the classic pairing: fries are the safest match for burgers and sandwiches; the top-ranked McDonald’s version is the benchmark here.
  • For a more distinctive order: choose a topped or mixed side such as Animal Style Fries or Have-sies, where available.
  • For a change from potatoes: tempura green beans offer crunch with a vegetable base.
  • For a filling, creamy option: mac and cheese shifts the meal toward comfort-food territory.
  • For a regional specialty: poutine is a Canadian classic whose fast-food availability depends on the restaurant and location.

For current descriptions, official menus are the better guide; older or broad editorial rankings are useful for discovering legacy, regional, and limited items. The fast-food comparison tool from Fast Food Nutrition is also framed around comparing items when choosing what to order, but a cross-chain comparison is only meaningful when serving sizes and markets match.

Lovefood’s 2025 all-time ranking provides broader context for sides beyond this top ten, including biscuits, mashed potatoes, chili, chicken sides, and limited or regional dishes. Its order is one publication’s editorial judgment, not an independently verified sales leaderboard.
