For lower-cost multiroom audio, start by matching the speaker system to your music services and devices—not by comparing one speaker’s price with one Sonos model. WiiM Sound is a feature-rich Wi-Fi option, while HomePod mini and Amazon Echo models make more sense for Apple- or Alexa-centered homes. Audio Pro and Bluesound are other systems to consider, but the available comparisons do not establish them as the cheapest choices.

What makes a speaker a Sonos alternative?

A Sonos alternative is more than a speaker that plays music wirelessly. If you want audio synchronized across rooms, or different music in different rooms, check that the speakers support Wi-Fi grouping in the system you plan to use. What Hi-Fi? describes multiroom as generally involving Wi-Fi speakers that can play the same or different audio simultaneously on each speaker (What Hi-Fi?’s multiroom guide). Bluetooth speakers should not be assumed to offer the same whole-home behavior.

You also do not have to equip every room at once. What Hi-Fi? recommends starting with one or two speakers and adding more room by room, which can spread the cost (What Hi-Fi?’s Sonos alternatives guide). Before buying, decide whether you need synchronized playback, separate zones, stereo pairing, portability, TV or surround use, or compatibility with equipment you already own.

Which alternatives are worth considering?

Option Best fit What to check
WiiM Sound A Wi-Fi speaker with broad streaming options and a 3.5 mm input Apple Music and AirPlay 2 are not supported in the cited review; its reviewer also found room correction weaker than the Sonos Era 100.
WiiM Sound Lite A lower-cost WiiM smart-speaker candidate Confirm its current price and exact specifications; connections and technologies vary across the WiiM range.
Apple HomePod mini Smaller, less expensive HomePod experience for Apple-oriented homes Consider whether its ecosystem fits your household; it is not a neutral cross-platform default.
Amazon Echo family An Alexa-centered route to multiroom audio Confirm the exact Echo model, grouping features and music-service support you need. Echo is not automatically equivalent to every Sonos model in sound, connections or system breadth.
Audio Pro A multiroom system for buyers prioritizing performance What Hi-Fi? names the C20 W its best overall multiroom pick in a separate guide, but the cited sources do not establish it as the cheapest option.
Bluesound A current category-level competitor to investigate The cited guide does not provide a specific model price or enough detail for a model-to-model verdict.
Bose Lifestyle Ultra A speaker with multiple streaming connections and grouping options Its reported review price places it in a competing midrange tier, not an assured budget pick. It lacks Bose CustomTune and is not backward-compatible with older Bose equipment as a surround speaker.

How the leading options differ

WiiM Sound: feature-rich, but not necessarily cheaper

In a comparison published January 11, 2026, TechRadar reported US prices of $299 for WiiM Sound, $219 for Sonos Era 100 and $479 for Sonos Era 300. These are prices reported at the time of that comparison, not verified current offers (TechRadar’s WiiM Sound and Sonos comparison). The reviewer describes WiiM Sound as a Wi-Fi multiroom speaker with 24-bit/192kHz streaming, access to more than 20 services through the WiiM Home app, and a 3.5 mm input. However, it does not support Apple Music or AirPlay 2, and the reviewer found its room correction weaker than the Era 100. In that comparison, TechRadar concluded that the Era 100 offered better value—an important reminder that “alternative” does not mean “cheaper.”

WiiM Sound Lite: check the exact model before choosing

What Hi-Fi? describes the Sound Lite as a cut-price WiiM smart speaker that competes with Amazon Echo speakers. Its guide says the WiiM app provides access to numerous services and that high-resolution audio is supported across the range, while warning that connections and technologies vary by model (What Hi-Fi?’s Sonos alternatives guide). Check the Sound Lite’s current specifications and price rather than assuming it has the same inputs or features as another WiiM model.

HomePod mini and Echo: choose by ecosystem

HomePod mini is a budget-oriented option for people who want a smaller, cheaper HomePod experience; its appeal is strongest in an Apple-oriented home (What Hi-Fi?’s Sonos alternatives guide). Echo speakers can work together in a wireless multiroom system, and What Hi-Fi? notes that models may be discounted. Treat Echo as an Alexa-centered path, and verify the features and services on the specific model you are considering (What Hi-Fi?’s Sonos alternatives guide).

Audio Pro, Bluesound and Bose: compare the exact system

What Hi-Fi? rates Audio Pro highly among alternatives and names the C20 W its best overall multiroom pick in a separate guide. That is evidence of a credible option, not proof it is the lowest-cost one (What Hi-Fi?’s multiroom guide). The same publication added Bluesound to its alternatives guide in May 2026, but the cited passage does not identify a model price or establish a direct comparison (What Hi-Fi?’s Sonos alternatives guide).

Tom’s Guide reported a US price of $299 for Bose Lifestyle Ultra in its 2026 review. The speaker supports Google Cast, Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth 5.3 and a 3.5 mm input; it can be stereo-paired or grouped across rooms. The review says it lacks Bose CustomTune room tuning and cannot serve as a surround speaker with older Bose equipment (Tom’s Guide’s Bose Lifestyle Ultra review). Its reported price is review context, not a guaranteed current deal.

How to choose a system that fits your rooms

  1. List the rooms and listening behavior you need. Decide whether audio should follow you through the home, play separately by room, form stereo pairs, or expand into a TV or surround setup. These are different system requirements.
  2. Check music services and device compatibility. Confirm that your preferred services work in the speaker’s app or through a supported connection. Apple Music and AirPlay 2 support are particularly important to verify for Apple users considering WiiM Sound.
  3. Verify grouping and expansion. Look for Wi-Fi multiroom support across the specific models you plan to combine. If you already own speakers or home-theater equipment, check model-family compatibility rather than assuming products from the same broad brand work together.
  4. Compare connections and room tuning. Check whether you need an analog input, such as the 3.5 mm input on WiiM Sound or Bose Lifestyle Ultra, and whether room correction matters in your space. A higher streaming-resolution specification does not by itself settle which speaker will suit your room.
  5. Compare the total cost for your plan. Use current local prices for the first speaker and any later additions. Treat the cited US review prices as dated reference points, not live offers, and compare the cost of covering the rooms you will actually use.
  6. Start small if you are unsure. Begin with one or two speakers, confirm that the app, services and grouping work as you expect, then expand room by room.

What is a good alternative to Sonos?

There is no universal best pick in the cited comparisons. For a feature-rich Wi-Fi speaker, assess WiiM Sound against your service needs and its dated review price; for an Apple home, consider HomePod mini; for Alexa-led multiroom, investigate the Echo model that fits your budget. If tested multiroom performance matters more than finding the lowest price, compare Audio Pro, while treating Bluesound and Bose as model-specific alternatives rather than automatic budget winners.
