An ofrenda is not simply a decorated altar. It is a way of bringing the dead close through memory: a ritual of attention to the life someone lived and the bond that remains. That idea offers a gentle lesson about grief—not that remembrance makes loss disappear, but that love can still have a place in ordinary life.

Remembering is an act of relationship

Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de los Pueblos Indígenas describes offering as being near the dead in order to “dialogue with their memory, with their life.” It calls the ofrenda a reunion with a ritual that summons memory. Those phrases suggest something more intimate than looking back: remembrance can be a way of staying in conversation with what a person gave, taught, and made possible.

That is what I find beautiful in the idea of an ofrenda. Grief can make a person’s absence feel like the only fact that matters. A ritual of remembrance makes room for another fact, too: the relationship happened, and it continues to shape the living. This is a reflection on what the practice can invite, not a claim that every person grieves in the same way or that an altar resolves grief.

INPI’s account of ofrenda elements describes the altar as a ritual of memory and reunion. Its meaning is not reducible to any one object on the table; the act of remembering is central.

What an ofrenda may include—and why there is no universal recipe

Descriptions of ofrendas often mention food, fruit, water, salt, candles, flowers, incense, and papel picado. INPI’s 2019 account, for example, lists bread, salt, fruit, prepared foods, water and, for adults, wine, alongside candles, flowers, copal incense and cempasúchil. Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture also names papel picado, pan de muerto, sweets, candles and flowers.

These are examples, not a checklist every family must follow. The objects and their meanings vary among families, communities and places. A particular arrangement may reflect local materials, a family’s inherited practice, the person being remembered, or the symbolism its makers choose. There is no single correct design established by these cultural accounts.

For that reason, the question “What belongs on a Día de Muertos altar?” has no one-size-fits-all answer. A candle or a piece of papel picado may be meaningful, but neither is a requirement for love, grief or remembrance.

A tradition shaped by many histories

Día de Muertos is not a frozen custom with one simple origin story. The North Carolina Museum of Art’s educational resource explains that traditions evolved over time and incorporated Catholic elements introduced by Spanish colonizers. Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture emphasizes the variety of expressions among Indigenous peoples and communities.

That history matters when we talk about ofrendas. Treating one altar as the definitive version erases the different communities and histories in which the practice has meaning. A respectful account makes room for variation rather than presenting a single family’s choices as universal.

The Secretariat of Culture’s description and the North Carolina Museum of Art’s overview offer useful context for that cultural variety and historical change.

Can an ofrenda help with grief?

Ritual can give remembrance a shape: a time to pause, objects to gather, stories to tell, or a shared practice through which people can name someone’s place in their lives. That may feel sustaining to some people. It should not be confused with a clinical treatment or a guaranteed way to feel better.

In an Associated Press report published on 2 November 2025, Cesáreo Moreno, chief curator and visual director of the National Museum of Mexican Art, described the tradition as having an important role in grieving. That is an attributed cultural perspective, not clinical evidence that ofrendas treat grief or produce a particular outcome.

Grief is not a task with a finish line, and people do not need to adopt a particular ritual to remember well. For some, a structured observance may offer connection; for others, remembrance may be private, occasional, or take another form. The value is in the meaning people make, not in performing a prescribed response.

Approaching the tradition with care

People who are not Mexican may wonder whether they can create an ofrenda. The cultural sources cited here do not set out a universal permission rule, so it would be misleading to offer a blanket yes or no. A thoughtful approach starts by learning about the tradition and the communities connected to it, avoiding claims that one’s version represents everyone, and listening when people from those communities describe what the practice means to them.

If you are making a remembrance space, it can help to be clear about what you are doing: honoring someone you love, learning about a cultural tradition, or taking part in a community observance. Those are not automatically the same thing. Where a family or community has invited you into its practice, follow its guidance; where you are unsure, learn from credible cultural sources rather than assuming that familiar objects carry the same meaning in every setting.

What stays with me

The beauty of an ofrenda is not that it denies death. It gives memory a place among the living: in a story retold, a meal recalled, a candle lit, or an object chosen with care. Its deepest lesson, as I understand it, is that remembering can be an act of relationship—one that leaves room for many traditions, many forms of grief, and many ways to carry love forward.
