APQP is a cross-functional automotive quality-planning approach for moving a project from concept toward launch while reducing lead times and startup issues. For launch teams, the key current change is that the AIAG APQP 3rd Edition and the separately published Control Plan 1st Edition are distinct but connected references. The manuals guide the work; customer-specific requirements determine what a particular program must submit and when.
What is APQP?
Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) is an automotive approach to planning product quality from concept through launch. AIAG describes it as a way to move projects from concept to launch while minimizing lead times and startup issues. It is cross-functional in practice: launch readiness depends on connected decisions about customer needs, product and process risks, sourcing, changes, and production controls—not on completing a checklist in isolation.
APQP is a framework, not a substitute for the controlled manual or the requirements agreed with a customer. The exact phases, deliverables, evidence, acceptance criteria, and gate timing should be taken from the current licensed publication and the applicable customer-specific requirements.

How does APQP help launch a product?
APQP gives a team a way to coordinate quality planning as a project moves toward production. The practical value is in making dependencies visible early: a sourcing decision can affect process planning; a product or process change can alter risk and controls; and a readiness review is only useful if the team can see what evidence exists and what remains unresolved.
#1 Best Overall
This is an explanatory way to connect the areas AIAG says its current edition emphasizes, not a replacement for the formal process defined in the manual. AIAG does not publish a general effectiveness percentage on the cited pages, so no specific reduction in cost, defects, lead time, or launch problems should be assumed.
What changed in APQP 3rd Edition?
AIAG published the APQP 3rd Edition in March 2024. It identifies product code APQP-3 and lists multiple purchase formats. The update expands attention beyond deliverable completion to a set of planning and management topics:
- Agile product management
- Sourcing and change management
- APQP program metrics and gated management
- Risk assessment and mitigation plans
- Part traceability
- Checklists and examples of analytical techniques
These topics help frame what a launch team should keep connected across the program, but the public summary does not establish universal forms, thresholds, or gate criteria. Use the manual and customer requirements to determine the required evidence for a live project. See AIAG’s APQP information and APQP 3rd Edition manual.

The work remains connected, but the documents are now separate. AIAG removed Control Plan content from the APQP manual and published a standalone Control Plan 1st Edition. The companion manual explains its links to APQP, use of control plans, and best practices. AIAG’s release materials also highlight Safe Launch requirements in control plan phases and examples for highly automated manufacturing.
Rank #3
For a launch team, this means planning and risk analysis should align with the controls used to manage production and the launch period. Do not interpret the separate publication as meaning a Control Plan is no longer part of quality planning.
When do we use the Control Plan?
A Control Plan is used to define and communicate how production controls are planned and managed; the standalone AIAG manual provides the relevant guidance and examples. The public release summary does not specify a universal sequence, required content for every program, or customer approval trigger. Confirm those details against the current manual and customer-specific requirements, including any Safe Launch expectations.

What should an APQP launch team focus on?
Make ownership visible across the functions involved in the program, following the organization’s and customer’s requirements for who participates. Then keep the following connected as the project advances:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Sourcing and timing: Surface sourcing decisions and dependencies early enough for their effect on readiness to be reviewed.
- Changes and risk: Assess product or process changes alongside risks, mitigation actions, and program timing.
- Metrics and gates: Use program metrics and gated reviews to expose readiness issues and unresolved risk; consult the manual for prescribed details.
- Traceability and analysis: Maintain traceability and apply the checklists and analytical techniques required by the program.
- Production controls: Align production controls and any Safe Launch arrangement with Control Plan guidance and customer requirements.
- Required evidence: Confirm the customer’s required editions, submissions, and timing before declaring a deliverable complete.
AIAG’s overview identifies these areas but does not define a universal team roster or evidence package. The licensed manuals and applicable supplier/customer requirements govern those specifics.

What implementation dates did AIAG state?
AIAG states that implementation of APQP 3rd Edition and Control Plan 1st Edition was required by GM and Stellantis as of September 1, 2024, and by Ford as of December 31, 2024. These dates are AIAG’s stated milestones for those automakers; they do not establish identical requirements for every OEM, supplier contract, plant, or geography. For a current program, verify the customer-specific requirements and applicable editions before setting gates or submission dates. See AIAG’s APQP information and its March 2024 release announcement.
