There is no single best smartphone for everyone. In 2026 expert buying guides, the strongest choices depend on whether you want iOS or Android, a versatile camera, a large screen, a foldable design, or better value. This US-oriented shortlist synthesizes recommendations and reported testing from Stuff, TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, and PhoneArena; it is not a claim that iTechGuides independently tested these phones.
The 9 best smartphones of 2026 at a glance
| Best for | Phone | Why it stands out | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best iPhone all-rounder | Apple iPhone 17 | Stuff’s all-rounder pick, with a 120Hz OLED display and A19 chip. | No dedicated telephoto camera, according to Stuff. |
| Best Android all-rounder | Google Pixel 10 | Stuff’s overall Android pick, with a 6.3-inch 120Hz display and versatile camera system. | Stuff flags 128GB base storage and slower wireless charging than Pro models. |
| Best big-screen power phone | Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra | Stuff highlights its integrated S Pen and Privacy Display. | Its large-screen, feature-rich design is most relevant to buyers who will use those capabilities. |
| Best budget pick | Nothing Phone 4a | Stuff describes it as an all-rounder with distinctive Glyph lights. | Stuff says its camera and performance are less competitive than some rivals. |
| Best flagship Android | OnePlus 15 | Stuff praises its performance, battery, cameras, and software. | Choose it for the combined flagship package rather than a particular specialist feature. |
| Best premium iPhone | Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max | Featured among leading iPhone recommendations by Stuff and PhoneArena. | Neither source’s recommendation makes it the right fit for someone who prefers Android or a smaller phone. |
| Best camera-focused option | Xiaomi 17 Ultra | Stuff’s camera-phone pick, with Leica-backed processing and optional physical-control accessories. | Camera priorities and image preferences are personal; accessories and regional availability need checking. |
| Best book-style foldable | Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 | Stuff’s foldable pick for readers considering a phone that opens into a larger screen. | A foldable form factor is a specific preference, not a universal upgrade over a conventional phone. |
| Best flip phone | Motorola Razr 60 Ultra | Stuff’s pick for the flip-phone category. | Its appeal depends on wanting a compact, folding design. |
These are attributed category recommendations, not a controlled head-to-head ranking. The source guides do not establish current prices, stock, or availability for every model and region, so check the exact US variant and retailer listing before buying.
How to choose among the picks
Start with your operating system and ecosystem
If you already rely on iPhone apps, services, or accessories, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro Max are the iOS choices in this shortlist. For Android, the Pixel 10, Galaxy S26 Ultra, Nothing Phone 4a, OnePlus 15, Xiaomi 17 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Razr 60 Ultra cover different priorities. A reviewer’s category winner does not make one operating system universally better.

Decide which camera capability matters
The Pixel 10 is Stuff’s overall Android recommendation partly for its versatile camera system, while Stuff positions the Xiaomi 17 Ultra specifically as its camera-phone pick. The iPhone 17 has a clear limitation for zoom-oriented buyers: Stuff notes that it lacks a dedicated telephoto lens. Camera processing and image style are subjective, so choose based on the kinds of photos you actually take rather than the word “best” alone.

- Super-bright 6.7" display + Bass Boost: Take your entertainment to the next level with a fast-refreshing 120Hz display* and stereo sound with more powerful bass****.

Match the form factor to how you use a phone
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is Stuff’s large-screen, power-user choice and includes an S Pen. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Motorola Razr 60 Ultra are recommendations for different folding formats: a book-style foldable and a flip phone. A conventional model may be a better fit if you do not specifically want a larger folding screen or a compact folding body.
Balance value, performance, and long-term ownership
Stuff identifies the Nothing Phone 4a as its budget pick, but notes camera and performance compromises relative to some rivals. Its guide praises the OnePlus 15 for a combination of performance, battery, cameras, and software. Those are reviewer assessments, not verified price comparisons here; compare current local prices, storage configurations, and the support terms for the exact model before deciding.

What expert testing does—and does not—tell you
Testing claims belong to the publication that performed the test. TechRadar says its guide draws on extensive testing in dedicated labs and reviewer experience, and notes that recently announced Pixel 11 models still await reviews and comparisons. Tom’s Guide reported 20 hours and 34 minutes for the Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro in its battery test in 2026. That is a result from Tom’s Guide’s test, not a promise of everyday battery life or a result for the other phones in this list. Tom’s Guide also notes camera weaknesses and dated software support for that gaming-focused model, which is why it is not included among these nine category picks.

Buying checks before you commit
- Confirm the exact model name, storage capacity, and regional variant in the listing; the guides do not establish current retailer inventory or prices.
- Check whether the phone’s operating system and ecosystem suit the apps and devices you already use.
- For camera buying, distinguish a dedicated telephoto lens from general camera versatility and from a reviewer’s preferred image processing.
- For foldables, decide whether the folding form factor itself serves your needs rather than assuming it is automatically better.
- Review the manufacturer’s current software-support terms and confirm the precise configuration offered in your market.
