The 8BitDo FlipPad gives compatible phones physical controls for portrait-oriented retro games, but it stays wired to the phone and does not replace a handheld console. Its appeal depends on whether you value compact, tactile controls enough to accept that phone-first setup—and whether repeated play makes the trade-off feel worthwhile.
What the 8BitDo FlipPad does
FlipPad is a compact mobile controller that connects directly to a phone over USB-C. 8BitDo designed it for portrait play, including retro games and mobile titles that support controllers. It is an attachment for your phone, not a standalone handheld, and the product page does not describe Bluetooth connectivity. GamesRadar’s September 30, 2026 review likewise notes that the direct USB-C connection leaves the controller dependent on the phone. 8BitDo’s FlipPad product page · GamesRadar’s review
That distinction matters for Game Boy-style play: the controller provides physical inputs, while the phone still runs the game and supplies the display. A title or emulator must support the controller for its controls to work; the available compatibility information does not establish that every game or emulator will work.

8BitDo lists support for iOS 26.2 and later and Android 13.0 and later. Those are operating-system minimums, not a guarantee that every compatible-version phone, game, or case will work. The company recommends phones 8–10 mm thick and says cases more than 2 mm thick are incompatible. Check the thickness of the phone and the case together against those limits before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Weighs 24.8 grams featuring 16 buttons. Ultra-portable and versatile.
- Made for 2D games
- Connection: wired USB-C.
- Supported operating systems: iOS 26.2 or later; Android 13.0 or later.
- Fit guidance: recommended phone thickness of 8–10 mm; cases over 2 mm thick are incompatible, according to 8BitDo.
- Size and weight: 70 × 66.5 × 19.7 mm and 31.5 g, as listed by 8BitDo.
If your phone uses a case thicker than the stated limit, or is outside the recommended thickness range, do not assume the controller will fit. Confirm your exact setup against 8BitDo’s compatibility and fit details.
Why the hinge may make a difference
The hinged controls can flip out of the way while the controller remains connected, according to 8BitDo. That is useful when a game or emulator needs touchscreen input for a menu or setting, or when you need to use the phone without unplugging the controller.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
GamesRadar’s reviewer, who said they tested FlipPad for a month, praised its compact design and button feel, while listing phone dependence and a limited feature set among the drawbacks. Those are that reviewer’s observations, not a universal assessment. For someone who mainly wants tactile controls for compatible portrait games, the hinge may be a practical convenience; for someone who wants a controller that works independently of a phone, it does not solve that need.

FlipPad versus GameSir Pocket Taco
GamesRadar identifies the GameSir Pocket Taco as a rival, but the available verified information is not enough for a detailed specification-by-specification comparison. Before choosing between them, compare their current official listings for the points that determine everyday use:

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Phone dependence: Does the controller attach to and rely on the phone, or can it work independently?
- Fit: What phone dimensions and case thickness does each support?
- Screen access: Can you reach the touchscreen or move the controls out of the way?
- Controls and comfort: Does the layout suit the games you play and the way you hold your phone?
- Portability: Compare dimensions and weight rather than relying on product photos.
- Price and availability: Check the current listing for your region; both can change.

- Officially licensed by Xbox. Bluetooth connection. Supports Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Officially supported by Apple. Compatible with Apple and Android devices. Stretchable design fits most phones (100–170mm in length).
- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers - Upgraded. Robust and long-lasting. Offering higher precision and sensitivity.
- Tactile bumpers and D-pad, 2 Pro back paddle buttons, Xbox button, and wear-resistant metal joystick rings for more ways to play.
- Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 on mobile.
8BitDo says the hinge is rated for over 6,000 open/close cycles and the USB-C connection for over 10,000 insertions. The company describes these as ideal-environment lab figures; they are manufacturer claims, not independent durability test results. 8BitDo’s product page
Who should consider it?
- A good fit: You want physical controls for compatible portrait-oriented mobile games, your phone and case meet the fit guidance, and you value a compact controller that can swing aside for touchscreen use.
- Think twice: You want a standalone handheld, wireless play, confirmed support for a particular game or emulator that has not been verified, or a setup that works with a thicker case.
The key trade-off is straightforward: FlipPad adds tactile controls in a small, phone-attached design, but your phone remains essential and game support is not universal. Whether it wins you over comes down to how often that specific setup suits the games you actually play.
