The best lightweight laptop for most people is the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air M5. It weighs 2.7 pounds, starts at $1,099 in the US, runs quietly, and combines strong everyday performance with excellent battery life. If you need Windows, the 2.15-pound Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura Edition is the lightest full Windows option, while the 3-pound Dell XPS 14 is the better conventional Intel choice for long tested endurance.
The rest of the shortlist serves distinct needs: ASUS offers the largest screen at ultralight weight, Microsoft delivers the most polished Windows touchscreen experience, and HP offers premium OLED with unusually high memory options. This guide is US-focused and uses starting or tested weights because every laptop’s mass can change with its display, processor, battery, and regional configuration.
Best overall: The 13-inch Apple MacBook Air with M5 is the easiest recommendation for most macOS buyers. Windows users should choose the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura Edition Gen 11 when minimum weight matters, or the Dell XPS 14 for conventional Intel compatibility and outstanding tested battery life.
This shortlist is category-based because no lightweight laptop is best for everyone. The six recommendations cover macOS, conventional Intel Windows, Windows on Arm, touchscreen use, large-screen portability, and premium OLED displays.

Battery figures are not directly comparable: reviewers use different brightness levels, workloads, resolutions, browsers, and test procedures. Manufacturer maximums are controlled scenarios, not promises of everyday runtime.
1. Apple MacBook Air M5, 13-inch: best lightweight laptop overall
Choose it if: You want the safest all-around balance of weight, speed, battery life, quiet operation, build quality, and price—and you are comfortable with macOS.
The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 is the default pick for most people because it solves the everyday laptop problem without adding much bulk. Apple lists a 10-core M5 CPU, an 8-core GPU in the base configuration, a 13.6-inch 2560×1664 Liquid Retina display, 500-nit brightness, a 2.7-pound weight, and up to 15 hours of wireless web use or 18 hours of video streaming.
Tom’s Hardware measured 15 hours 28 minutes in a test combining web browsing, video streaming, and light OpenGL work at 150 nits. That result is from the reviewer’s test environment; Apple’s longer figures use different workloads and should not be treated as equivalent.
Why it wins
- At 2.7 pounds, it is easy to carry without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or comfortable trackpad.
- The M5 delivers strong productivity and creative-app performance while keeping the laptop quiet during normal work.
- macOS works especially well for buyers already using an iPhone, AirPods, iCloud, or other Apple devices.
- The $1,099 US starting price is comparatively low for a premium aluminum laptop.
What you give up
- There are only two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, plus MagSafe charging and a headphone jack.
- The display is sharp and bright but lacks touch input and runs at 60Hz.
- macOS is not a substitute for Windows-only enterprise, engineering, specialist, or game software.
- Memory and storage are selected at purchase rather than upgraded later, so the initial configuration matters.
Recommended configuration: Choose 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD for general work, study, writing, browsing, and office applications. Move to 24GB or 32GB if you routinely keep large browser sessions, virtual machines, photo catalogs, video projects, or several demanding creative apps open. A compact USB-C hub is worthwhile if you regularly connect HDMI displays, USB-A accessories, SD cards, or wired networking.
2. Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura Edition Gen 11: lightest full Windows pick
Choose it if: Every ounce matters, but you still need conventional Windows and Intel compatibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe 14-inch Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura Edition Gen 11 weighs just 975g, or 2.15 pounds, on Lenovo’s current product page. That makes it the lightest traditional Windows laptop in this group. Its magnesium-aluminum chassis, 75Wh battery, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, and high-resolution OLED touchscreen give it a specification mix that is unusual at this weight.
The cited review configuration uses an Intel Core Ultra 7 355 processor, 32GB of soldered LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB SSD, and a 14-inch 2880×1800 OLED touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Tom’s Hardware measured 16 hours 38 minutes in a mixed web-browsing, video-streaming, and WebGL test at 150 nits.
Lenovo’s own figures are higher: up to 19 hours in MobileMark at 250 nits and up to 27 hours of local 1080p video playback at 150 nits. Those are controlled manufacturer scenarios, so the independent 16-hour-plus result is the more useful expectation for comparison.
Why it wins
- At 2.15 pounds, it is the easiest Windows laptop here to carry all day.
- The OLED panel provides deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and more vivid color than a basic LCD.
- The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and pen or touch interactions feel smoother.
- The cited configuration includes 32GB of memory and 1TB of storage, useful for heavy multitasking.
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports provide unusually strong high-speed connectivity for an ultralight.
What to watch
- The glossy OLED surface can reflect windows and overhead lights.
- Premium configurations cost substantially more than the MacBook Air.
- The thin chassis makes fan noise and heat more noticeable during long CPU-heavy or creative workloads than during office work.
- Memory is soldered, so choose the capacity carefully.
The Yoga is the best answer for a traveler who sees weight as the primary constraint. Its only major compromise is that its premium, high-refresh OLED configuration costs more than its low weight initially suggests.
3. Dell XPS 14 (DA14260): best conventional Windows all-rounder
Choose it if: You want premium Windows hardware with Intel compatibility, a larger 14-inch workspace, and exceptional battery life from the base display.
The Dell XPS 14 (DA14260) is the most conventional choice in the shortlist. It uses an aluminum chassis, a 70Wh battery, Wi-Fi 7, and three Thunderbolt 4 ports. Dell lists a starting weight of 3 pounds for the 2K LCD configuration. Higher-resolution OLED and faster configurations weigh or cost differently.
Tom’s Hardware measured 20 hours 41 minutes on the base 1920×1200 LCD model in a mixed test involving web browsing, video streaming, and OpenGL work at 150 nits. That is one of the strongest independent endurance results recorded for an x86 Windows laptop. The OLED configuration has materially different power behavior; in the same review coverage, the OLED model lasted about 12 hours 23 minutes under the test conditions.
Pricing needs context. Tom’s Hardware listed a $1,600 starting price, while Dell’s live US page displayed a temporary promotional price of $1,349.99 when checked. These are different time and configuration snapshots, not necessarily conflicting specifications.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why it wins
- The base LCD combines sharp enough resolution with excellent efficiency.
- Intel-based Windows avoids the application and driver questions attached to Windows on Arm.
- Three Thunderbolt 4 ports support fast storage, displays, docks, and other demanding accessories.
- The 3-pound chassis remains highly portable while providing more workspace than a 13-inch laptop.
What to watch
- The low-travel, lattice-free keyboard can take time to learn and may produce more typing errors for some users.
- There is no USB-A port, so older accessories require an adapter or dock.
- Choosing OLED improves image quality but can reduce battery life and increase the purchase price.
Choose the base LCD if endurance is the priority. Choose OLED if color, contrast, and resolution matter more than maximum unplugged runtime.
4. ASUS Zenbook A16: best large-screen ultralight
Choose it if: You want a spacious 16-inch canvas but do not want to carry a typical 16-inch laptop.
The ASUS Zenbook A16 is the most distinctive laptop here. ASUS fits a 16-inch display into a chassis starting at about 1.20kg, or 2.65 pounds. The result is a very wide workspace for split-screen documents, timelines, spreadsheets, and photo editing without the usual weight penalty of a large laptop.
Current Snapdragon X2 configurations can include a 2880×1800 120Hz OLED display, up to 48GB of LPDDR5X memory, and a 70Wh battery. Ports are unusually useful for an ultralight: two USB4 ports, USB-A, HDMI, and a headphone jack. The official specification page shows that weight and battery capacity can vary between configurations, so check the exact SKU before buying.
Recommended Free Tools
ASUS advertises more than 21 hours of battery life in controlled video, web, or online-video scenarios. Windows Central recorded 14 hours 13 minutes of continuous 4K YouTube playback on its tested unit at roughly 200 nits and without energy-saving mode. That result cannot be compared directly with the MacBook Air 15 M5’s 15 hours 37 minutes in a different web-surfing test, but it shows why workload and display settings matter.
Why it wins
- The screen-to-weight ratio is exceptional.
- The 120Hz OLED option is well suited to visual work and media.
- Up to 48GB of memory gives creators and multitaskers more headroom than many ultraportables.
- USB-A, HDMI, and a headphone jack reduce the need for dongles.
What to watch
- Snapdragon means Windows on Arm, so compatibility should be checked for specialist applications, games, drivers, and peripherals.
- OLED can consume more power than a basic LCD in some workloads.
- The laptop is light, but its 16-inch footprint is physically wider and may not fit comfortably on every airplane tray or small café table.
The Zenbook A16 is the right choice when screen area is more valuable than the smallest possible footprint. It is not the right choice simply because its manufacturer advertises a large battery number; verify the display and processor configuration first.
5. Microsoft Surface Laptop 8th Edition, 13.8-inch: best polished touchscreen Windows laptop
Choose it if: You want a refined Windows laptop with a high-refresh touchscreen, quiet operation, and Microsoft’s hardware-and-software design.
The consumer 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 8th Edition weighs 2.96 pounds and starts at $1,599.99 in the US. It offers Snapdragon X2 Plus or X2 Elite processors, a 2304×1536 120Hz HDR PixelSense touchscreen, USB4, USB-A, Surface Connect, and a headphone jack.

Microsoft’s May 2026 controlled testing lists up to 20 hours of local video playback and up to 16 hours of web browsing for the 13.8-inch Snapdragon model. In a more demanding real-world review, The Guardian got just under 14 hours while using many Chrome tabs, Evernote, text editing, chat applications, and photo editing. The Guardian also found the Surface slower than Apple’s M5 MacBook Air in its comparison.
Why it wins
- The 120Hz HDR touchscreen is more versatile than the MacBook Air’s non-touch 60Hz panel.
- The 2.96-pound chassis is light enough for commuting but does not feel unusually compromised.
- USB-A, USB4, Surface Connect, and a headphone jack make the port selection practical.
- It is quiet and polished for everyday productivity.
What to watch
- It uses Windows on Arm, so x86 and x64 compatibility is not identical to an Intel Windows laptop.
- The price is high for a machine aimed mainly at productivity.
- Native Arm applications generally deliver the best performance and battery life, while emulated apps may behave differently.
The Surface Laptop 8 is the most attractive Windows choice for people who value the touchscreen experience and Microsoft’s cohesive design more than maximum performance per dollar.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. HP OmniBook Ultra 14: best premium OLED and high-memory option
Choose it if: You want a premium OLED touchscreen, abundant memory and storage, and a high-end Windows-on-Arm configuration.
The HP OmniBook Ultra 14 weighs 2.83 pounds and measures approximately 12.25×8.49×0.42 inches. Current models use Snapdragon X2 processors and OLED touchscreens. Depending on the configuration, the screen is either 2K or 3K, with the premium version reaching a 120Hz refresh rate.
HP advertises up to 44.45 hours of local video playback, but that figure applies only to a specific Snapdragon X2 Plus configuration with 16GB of memory, a 70Wh battery, and a 2K OLED panel under a controlled FHD video test. It should not be applied to the 3K, 120Hz, high-memory model.
Tom’s Guide lists a starting price of about $1,899 and measured 13 hours 27 minutes in its web-surfing test. Windows Central reviewed a much higher-end 64GB/2TB Snapdragon X2 Elite model with a 3K 120Hz OLED touchscreen and praised its display, keyboard, performance, and battery life. Three 40Gbps USB-C ports provide excellent modern connectivity, but the cited current configuration has no USB-A port.
Why it wins
- The OLED display, chassis, keyboard, and haptic touchpad create a genuinely premium package.
- High-memory configurations are attractive for large creative projects and heavy multitasking.
- Three 40Gbps USB-C ports provide strong support for fast drives, docks, and displays.
- It remains under 3 pounds despite the premium display and large memory ceiling.
What to watch
- High-end configurations are expensive and may be difficult to find consistently.
- Battery results vary sharply with panel resolution, refresh rate, memory, processor, and workload.
- There is no USB-A on the cited current configuration.
- As with the Surface and Zenbook, Arm compatibility must be checked before purchase.
The OmniBook Ultra 14 makes sense for buyers who know they want OLED and more than the usual 16GB of memory. It is overkill for basic browsing and documents, especially at its higher configurations.
Windows on Arm: check this before buying three of these laptops
The Surface Laptop 8, ASUS Zenbook A16, and Snapdragon HP OmniBook Ultra 14 run Windows on Arm. This platform is now much more capable than early Windows RT-era devices: Microsoft says many x86 applications run through its Prism emulation layer, and x64 emulation is broadly available in Windows 11. Native Arm applications remain preferable for performance, battery life, and reliability.
The important limitation is not ordinary web browsing or Microsoft 365. It is the software and hardware around your specific workflow. Microsoft says peripherals depend on built-in Windows drivers or Arm64 drivers supplied by the hardware maker. Some games, antivirus tools, virtualization software, assistive technologies, specialist engineering applications, and unusual USB devices may require extra checking.
Compatibility checklist
- Search the developer’s support page for an Arm64-native version or confirmed Prism compatibility.
- Check printer, scanner, audio-interface, security-token, docking-station, and other peripheral drivers.
- Confirm that anti-cheat systems support your games if gaming matters.
- Verify virtualization, local database, CAD, scientific, and enterprise tools before purchase.
- Do not assume that an application’s presence in the Microsoft Store guarantees full hardware or plug-in compatibility.
Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ and its software and peripherals guidance are the best places to verify a must-have application or device.
How to choose the right lightweight laptop
Start with the operating system
Choose the MacBook Air M5 if macOS works for you and you value the lowest-friction overall experience. Choose the Dell XPS 14 or Lenovo Yoga if you require traditional Intel Windows compatibility. Choose the Surface, Zenbook, or HP only after checking your software and peripherals against Windows on Arm.
Decide whether weight or screen area matters more
The Yoga is the lightest at 2.15 pounds. The MacBook Air is only slightly heavier at 2.7 pounds. The Zenbook A16 is the physical outlier: its 16-inch display is much larger, but its starting weight is still only 2.65 pounds. The Dell, Surface, and HP sit around 2.8 to 3 pounds and feel more like conventional premium notebooks.

LCD is usually the sensible choice for battery-conscious office work, as the Dell XPS 14 demonstrates. OLED is better for contrast, color, movies, and visual work, but glossy surfaces and higher power draw can be trade-offs. A 120Hz display improves scrolling and interaction, but it can consume more power than a 60Hz panel.
Buy enough memory at the beginning
Lightweight laptops commonly solder memory to the motherboard. For ordinary productivity, 16GB is the practical minimum recommendation in 2026. Choose 24GB or 32GB for heavier multitasking, creative applications, or a longer ownership horizon. The Yoga reaches 32GB in the cited configuration, ASUS offers up to 48GB, and HP has been reviewed in a 64GB/2TB configuration.
Do not compare battery claims without reading the footnotes
Apple’s maximums combine wireless web and video streaming. Lenovo uses MobileMark and local video playback. Microsoft reports local video and web browsing. ASUS uses several controlled scenarios. HP’s 44.45-hour headline belongs to one particular 2K configuration. Independent reviews are more useful for comparison, but even they use different test methods.
