As of 7 October 2026, RTINGS’ VPN router roundup names the ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000 as its top pick and the TP-Link Archer BE230 as its budget choice. The right router depends less on the headline ranking than on three questions: whether you need a kill switch, how precisely you want to choose which devices or apps use the VPN, and whether you want the router to grow into a mesh or managed network later.

The five picks below and their feature details come from RTINGS’ 2026 roundup, not from our own lab testing. Prices and regional availability change quickly, so check them on the day you buy.

What a VPN router actually does

A VPN router runs the VPN tunnel itself, so every device connected to it can use the VPN without installing VPN software on each one. That matters for devices that cannot run VPN apps. ASUS specifically points to TVs and set-top boxes as examples of devices that may not support VPN applications.

  • Client mode sends your home traffic out through a commercial or other VPN provider. This is the mode most people mean when they ask for a “VPN router.”
  • Server mode lets you connect into your home network from outside, for example to reach local files or services while you are away. It does not change how your home devices reach the internet.

Most of the routers below support both modes, but the two are often configured separately, so check each one before assuming a feature is available.

The five picks at a glance

RTINGS ranks the five models from top pick down to budget. The table shows the feature differences RTINGS highlights. Where the roundup does not state a value, the cell says so.

The five routers, one by one

ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000: the top pick for whole-home Wi-Fi 7

RTINGS places this model first because of its combination of Wi-Fi 7 coverage, mesh flexibility and VPN features, including support for several VPN connections at once and a dedicated VPN network. It suits a household that wants one router to handle both the VPN and a large Wi-Fi footprint. Its weak point is the absence of a kill switch, so households that rely on traffic being blocked whenever a tunnel drops should look at the other models first.

UniFi Dream Router 7: granular rules for a prosumer setup

The UniFi Dream Router 7 is the choice when the question is not “which devices” but “which traffic.” It can send traffic according to device, app, domain, VLAN or IP subnet, and it includes a kill switch. That level of control comes with a steeper learning curve. Provider configurations must be downloaded and imported before client use, and Wi-Fi expansion depends on UniFi access points, so the true cost of the setup grows with the network.

GL.iNet Flint 3 (GL-BE9300): flexible Wi-Fi 7 for a home network

The Flint 3 is the most balanced option among the GL.iNet models in the list. It pairs tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with a kill switch, policy routing and presets for more than 30 VPN services, which makes provider setup faster than importing files by hand. It is a weaker fit if you plan to manage a larger fleet of switches and access points from one system.

GL.iNet Flint 2 (GL-MT6000): the cheaper GL.iNet route

The Flint 2 keeps the same VPN approach as the Flint 3, including the kill switch, policy routing and more than 30 provider presets. What you give up is the newer radio standard: it is dual-band Wi-Fi 6 rather than tri-band Wi-Fi 7. It also has fewer high-speed Ethernet ports and no mesh expansion. It makes sense when the VPN features matter more than wireless headroom.

TP-Link Archer BE230: the budget Wi-Fi 7 router

The Archer BE230 is the simplest option for choosing devices. You add the devices you want on the VPN, and the rest of the network keeps its normal connection. TP-Link’s own support guide states this directly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Only the devices you add to this list will use the VPN connection. All other devices on your network will continue to use your regular Internet connection as normal.”

The tradeoffs are the lack of a dedicated kill switch and the lack of a preset commercial VPN profile, so you will need to import a provider configuration. WireGuard applies only to select models, and TP-Link notes that availability varies by region and hardware revision.

Routing: all devices or only some

How a router chooses which traffic goes through the VPN is often the most important difference between models. There are three common approaches in this roundup:

  • Device-based selection, as on the TP-Link Archer BE230, where you pick the devices that use the tunnel and everything else stays on your normal connection.
  • Policy routing, as on the two GL.iNet models, which lets you define rules for which traffic is sent through the VPN.
  • Granular rules by app, domain, VLAN or IP subnet, as on the UniFi Dream Router 7, which suits networks with separate segments such as a guest network or IoT devices.

A dedicated VPN network, as on the ASUS model, is a different kind of setup: it separates the VPN traffic into its own network rather than only tagging devices. If you need one device to be off the VPN while others are on it, confirm that the selection method you need is supported before buying.

Speed: what the numbers do and do not tell you

Wi-Fi speed ratings describe the wireless link between your device and the router. They do not tell you how fast your traffic will move through a VPN tunnel, because the encryption, the provider’s server and your internet connection all limit throughput. RTINGS explicitly excludes speeds measured while connected to a VPN from its roundup scores.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

The clearest vendor figures in the sources come from GL.iNet’s product page for the Beryl AX, a travel router rather than one of the five picks. The page lists maximum client-mode speeds of 300 Mbps with WireGuard and 150 Mbps with OpenVPN. GL.iNet says these were measured on a local network, that real-world speeds may differ, and that server-mode speeds are slower. Treat these as vendor claims for that specific device and test conditions, not as the performance of the routers above.

Before you buy: setup checks

Use this checklist before ordering, because most setup problems start with a mismatch on one of these points:

  • Protocol support: confirm that your provider offers WireGuard or OpenVPN and that the router supports that protocol on your exact model. TP-Link limits WireGuard to select models.
  • Provider configuration: the UniFi Dream Router 7 and TP-Link Archer BE230 require you to import a provider configuration. The GL.iNet models offer presets for more than 30 services. ASUS advises confirming the connection type with your VPN provider.
  • Hardware revision and region: availability of specific features can vary by region and hardware revision, so check the model number on the box and the product page for your country.
  • Subscription: a router’s VPN feature does not include a commercial VPN subscription. You may need an existing account and its configuration file.
  • Firmware: RTINGS’ list reflects the features as of its 7 October 2026 review. Update the router’s firmware and confirm the feature list in the current product documentation.

What a VPN router does not guarantee

A VPN router changes which network your traffic leaves through. It does not, by itself, make you anonymous or protect you from every party that can see your traffic. It also cannot guarantee that a streaming service will always be accessible through a VPN location, since that depends on the provider and the service. RTINGS names region-specific streaming access as one common use case, but that is a use case, not a promise.

Which router to choose

  • If you want the strongest overall pick for a large Wi-Fi 7 home and do not need a kill switch, choose the ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000.
  • If you need to control traffic by app, domain or VLAN and already run or plan to run UniFi equipment, choose the UniFi Dream Router 7.
  • If you want kill-switch protection and provider presets with current Wi-Fi 7, choose the GL.iNet Flint 3.
  • If you want the same VPN features as the Flint 3 for less money and can accept Wi-Fi 6, choose the GL.iNet Flint 2.
  • If you only need certain devices on the VPN and want a budget Wi-Fi 7 router, choose the TP-Link Archer BE230, after confirming WireGuard support for your model and region.
