Best overall: The Samsung HW-Q990F is the strongest all-around soundbar system with a subwoofer in 2026, thanks to its powerful bass, clear dialogue, convincing Dolby Atmos height effects, and included rear speakers. The JBL Bar 1000MK2 is the better choice if you want detachable wireless surrounds, while the Hisense AX5140Q delivers the most affordable route to a full Atmos setup.

The first four recommendations below include a separate subwoofer. The Klipsch Flexus Core 300 is the space-saving exception: its subwoofer drivers are built into the soundbar rather than supplied as a wireless external box. That distinction matters because an external subwoofer usually delivers deeper, more forceful bass, but it also needs floor space.

Quick comparison

This list follows the current five-category lineup from RTINGS’ best soundbars with a subwoofer guide, updated August 3, 2026. RTINGS says it has tested more than 250 soundbars using multi-stage testing and considers performance, price, user feedback, and availability.

1. Samsung HW-Q990F: best overall

Choose it if: You want the most complete movie and TV surround system and have room for a wide soundbar, a separate subwoofer, and rear speakers.

The Samsung HW-Q990F is the safest overall recommendation in this group. RTINGS reports that it produces intelligible dialogue, convincing Dolby Atmos height effects, and accurate movement of sounds from side to side and front to back. Its bass remains controlled even at high volume, while explosions, movie scores, and other low-frequency effects have the physical impact expected from a dedicated subwoofer.

It is a full 11.1.4-channel package consisting of the soundbar, wireless subwoofer, and rear-speaker kit. The high channel count does not guarantee perfect surround in every room, but it gives the system more physical speakers with which to create a broad sound field and overhead effects.

ULTIMEA 5.1CH Surround Sound Bar System with Dolby Atmos, Poseidon M60
  • Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
  • Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
  • 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
  • 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Samsung’s official HW-Q990F specification sheet lists Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, HDMI eARC, two HDMI inputs, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, Alexa support, and Dynamic Bass Control for the subwoofer. It also supports 4K/120Hz passthrough, which is useful for a compatible gaming console or PC when you want to route the source through the soundbar.

Physical size is the main warning. The bar is approximately 48.5 inches wide, making it a better fit for medium or large TVs than for a compact stand. You also need convenient locations for the subwoofer and rear speakers, plus power outlets for the components.

Samsung TV owners may be able to use Q-Symphony, which combines compatible Samsung TV speakers with the soundbar. However, Samsung specifies that Q-Symphony depends on supported TV generations and models. A Samsung television is not required for normal soundbar operation, so verify compatibility before paying extra for that ecosystem feature.

2. JBL Bar 1000MK2: best mid-range surround package

Choose it if: You want genuine rear-channel surround but do not want the rear speakers permanently occupying the room.

The JBL Bar 1000MK2 is unusually flexible because its rear surround speakers detach from the main bar and operate wirelessly on rechargeable batteries. You can position them behind the seating area for a movie, then dock or store them when the room needs to serve another purpose. This makes the system particularly attractive for renters, apartments, and multipurpose living rooms.

JBL identifies the system as 7.1.4-channel. Its package includes a 10-inch wireless subwoofer and detachable, battery-powered surround speakers. JBL rates the detachable speakers for up to 10 hours of playback, although actual battery life varies with volume and content. The company also lists room calibration, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, HDMI eARC, and 4K Dolby Vision passthrough on the official product page.

RTINGS describes the JBL’s bass as somewhat heavy compared with the Samsung. That can be enjoyable for action films and bass-heavy music, but listeners who prefer a more restrained tonal balance may need to adjust the bass level. RTINGS also notes that the soundbar lacks HDMI 2.1 video passthrough. If you use a high-refresh-rate console or PC, connect that device directly to a compatible TV instead of assuming the soundbar can pass through every gaming signal.

Remember that “wireless surrounds” does not mean that every component is cable-free. The detachable rear speakers need charging, and the main soundbar and subwoofer still need power. The advantage is that you avoid routing permanent signal cables to the rear of the room.

  • Wireless Subwoofer, Place It Anywhere: The wireless subwoofer connects to the soundbar without audio cables, giving you the freedom to place it anywhere in your room for flexible setup.
  • Mica-Reinforced Drivers for Greater Accuracy: Mica-reinforced diaphragms increase driver rigidity by up to 30%, helping suppress cone breakup and unwanted resonance. The enhanced stability helps reduce distortion by up to 20%, delivering cleaner, more accurate sound with improved clarity and detail.
  • VoiceMX Technology for Clear Dialogue: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. By dynamically boosting the 120 Hz–6 kHz vocal range with adaptive EQ and gain control, dialogue stays clear and easy to follow in any scene.
  • BassMX Deep Bass Technology: With an 18 mm high-excursion driver, 6.5 L tuned cabinet, and high-density magnetic circuit, the wireless subwoofer produces strong low-frequency output. BassMX optimizes 45–150 Hz bass for deeper, tighter, and more realistic sound at any volume.
  • 240W Peak Output with 2.1 Channel System: Featuring a precision-tuned soundbar and a dedicated wireless subwoofer, the system delivers up to 240W of peak power for room-filling sound. 3. Hisense AX5140Q: best budget Atmos system

Choose it if: You want a separate subwoofer, rear speakers, and up-firing Atmos channels without moving into the premium price tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Hisense AX5140Q packs a lot of surround hardware into a budget-oriented system. Its 5.1.4 layout includes a separate subwoofer and two rear satellites with up-firing drivers. Those upward-firing speakers are designed to add height information to Dolby Atmos content, giving the system a better chance of creating overhead effects than a conventional bar with front-facing speakers alone.

According to RTINGS’ testing, the AX5140Q has a balanced frequency response, punchy bass, a discrete center channel for detailed voices, broad audio-format support, and video passthrough. The dedicated center channel is especially useful for dialogue-heavy films, television dramas, and broadcasts where speech clarity matters more than maximum bass.

The compromises are build quality and room correction. RTINGS reports that room correction is unavailable unless the system is paired with a compatible Hisense TV. Buyers with another TV brand should therefore avoid assuming that the system will automatically compensate for the room. Its height effects are also less convincing than those of the Samsung HW-Q990F.

The AX5140Q is best understood as a value-focused Atmos package, not a premium-finish system. It makes sense when channel count and separate speakers matter more than luxury materials, advanced calibration, or the most precise overhead imaging.

4. Vizio SV510X-0806: best cheap option

Choose it if: Your budget is tight, your room is small, and you still want a subwoofer and rear speakers instead of a bar-only system.

The Vizio SV510X-0806 is the lowest-cost-oriented choice here. RTINGS found its midrange balanced enough for realistic dialogue and detailed instruments, while its dedicated subwoofer adds noticeable impact to music. The two rear satellites create a more enveloping sound field than many similarly priced soundbars that rely only on the front bar.

Vizio’s official specifications list Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, HDMI eARC, Bluetooth 5.2, a compact wireless subwoofer, and two satellite speakers. The soundbar is approximately 33 inches wide, so it is easier to fit beneath a smaller TV than the 48.5-inch Samsung.

  • PICK UP EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE: Hear voices more clearly with automatically amplified dialogue allowing it to stand out so you don't miss a word, no matter what you're watching.

There is an important wiring detail: the satellites connect by wire to the subwoofer. The subwoofer’s connection to the soundbar is wireless, but the rear speakers are not independent, cable-free units. Plan the cable route around the subwoofer’s location before buying.

RTINGS found that the small subwoofer emphasizes mid- and high-bass frequencies rather than reproducing the deepest low bass as effectively as the higher-ranked systems. The rear speakers also lack up-firing drivers, so the SV510X-0806’s overhead Atmos effects are less convincing. It is nevertheless a sensible pick when the priority is affordable 5.1 surround rather than room-filling bass or premium height immersion.

5. Klipsch Flexus Core 300: best built-in-subwoofer solution

Choose it if: You want stronger bass but cannot—or do not want to—place a separate subwoofer on the floor.

The Klipsch Flexus Core 300 is the best space-saving option in this list. It does not include a wireless external subwoofer. Instead, RTINGS identifies it as the best soundbar with a built-in subwoofer it has tested, with bass performance that approaches the leading separate-subwoofer systems.

Klipsch’s official product information lists two pairs of built-in 4-inch high-output subwoofer drivers, four front-firing drivers, a horn-loaded tweeter, two up-firing Atmos drivers, and two side-firing drivers. The bar supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and its side- and up-firing drivers can add a degree of surround and height immersion without separate rear speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Core 300 also has a wired subwoofer output and can be expanded with compatible Klipsch subwoofer and surround speakers. That gives you an upgrade path if your room or listening habits change, although adding those components reduces the simplicity and space savings that make the bar attractive in the first place.

Its limitation is physics and coverage: a built-in subwoofer cannot create the same room-filling effect as a large external subwoofer placed separately in a large room, and the bar does not produce the same surround immersion as a complete system with dedicated rear speakers. For an apartment, small room, or neighbor-sensitive household, however, the compromise can be worthwhile.

How to choose the right soundbar with a subwoofer

Decide whether the subwoofer should be separate or built in

A separate subwoofer gives the bass speaker its own cabinet and lets you place it away from the soundbar. That generally produces deeper and more powerful bass, particularly for explosions, orchestral scores, sports sound effects, and electronic music. The trade-off is floor space, another powered component, and more packaging to install.

JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass (MK2) - 2.1 Channel soundbar with Wireless subwoofer (6.5’’), 300W Max Output, Bluetooth Enable (Black)
  • Bring the power: Fill your whole room with sound. An impressive 300W of total system power puts you in control. Your movies and music have never sounded so good.
  • Surround yourself with sound: JBL Surround Sound instantly brings movies, sports and music to life. Upgrade to an immersive sound experience for your TV without any extra wires or speakers.
  • All about the bass: Why just listen to the bass when you can experience it. The 6.5’’ wireless subwoofer delivers deep, thrilling sound.
  • Visit the movies, from your sofa: Get the popcorn ready. Built-in Dolby Digital gives you an authentic cinematic experience in your home.
  • Stream it all: Not in the mood for a film. No problem. With the JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass, you can also enjoy wireless music streaming via Bluetooth from your mobile or tablet.

A built-in-subwoofer bar such as the Klipsch Flexus Core 300 is easier to fit and less visually intrusive. It is usually the better choice when the TV stand has no room beside it, the room is small, or neighbors make very deep bass undesirable. It is not equivalent to a full system with a large external subwoofer and rear speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the system to the room, not just the TV size

Measure the available width beneath or in front of the TV, then identify a safe location for the subwoofer and rear speakers. The Samsung’s 48.5-inch bar is a substantial piece of equipment; the Vizio’s 33-inch bar is much easier to accommodate in a compact setup. The other systems also need adequate space for their external components or, in the JBL’s case, a practical place to dock and charge the rear speakers.

Large channel counts can be wasted if the rear speakers must sit directly beside the TV or if the seating position is pressed against a wall. Before choosing a 7.1.4 or 11.1.4 system, make sure the room can support speaker placement behind or beside the seating area.

Prioritize real rear speakers for surround immersion

A soundbar can simulate surround effects through processing and side-firing drivers, but separate rear speakers generally create a more enveloping sound field because effects originate behind the listener. The Samsung, JBL, Hisense, and Vizio all include rear speakers. The Klipsch relies on drivers built into the bar unless you add compatible expansion speakers later.

For Atmos, look for up-firing drivers as well as rear speakers. The Samsung and JBL provide the most complete premium arrangements in this group. The Hisense includes up-firing drivers in its rear satellites, while the Vizio’s rear speakers lack them. The Klipsch has up-firing drivers in the bar but no included rear-speaker kit.

Check HDMI features before buying for gaming

HDMI eARC is important when you want the TV to send high-quality audio formats to the soundbar. HDMI passthrough matters when you plan to connect a console or PC to the soundbar first. The Samsung specification sheet lists 4K/120Hz passthrough. RTINGS notes that the JBL does not provide HDMI 2.1 bandwidth passthrough, so high-refresh-rate gaming devices are better connected directly to a compatible television with audio returned over eARC.

Do not choose solely by the number of HDMI ports. Check the exact video resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and gaming features supported by the soundbar and TV combination.

Consider ecosystem features as bonuses, not requirements

Samsung’s Q-Symphony can be useful for owners of compatible Samsung TVs, but it is not required to use the HW-Q990F. Hisense room correction similarly depends on pairing the AX5140Q with a compatible Hisense TV, according to RTINGS. If you own another brand of television, compare the systems on sound, connections, speaker layout, and placement rather than assuming that ecosystem features will work.

Understand what “wireless” means

  • Wireless subwoofer: Usually means the audio signal travels wirelessly from the bar, but the subwoofer still needs a power outlet.
  • Wireless rear speakers: May still require power or charging. JBL’s detachable surrounds are battery-powered; they are not permanently wired to the bar.
  • Vizio satellite speakers: The subwoofer is wireless to the bar, but the rear satellites connect by wire to the subwoofer.

Setup checks before you buy

  1. Measure the TV stand. Confirm the bar will fit without blocking the screen or the TV’s remote sensor. Pay particular attention to the Samsung’s approximately 48.5-inch width.
  2. Plan subwoofer placement. Reserve floor space near an outlet. Do not assume a wireless subwoofer can be placed anywhere without regard to walls, furniture, or the listening position.
  3. Plan rear-speaker power and cable routes. JBL’s rears need charging; Vizio’s satellites need cables running back to the subwoofer. The Samsung and Hisense also require space and power for their rear-speaker components.
  4. Use HDMI eARC when available. It is the connection to prioritize for compatible TV and soundbar audio features. If you are replacing an old cable during installation, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is a sensible accessory for systems and sources that need high-bandwidth HDMI features.
  5. Check the TV and console specifications together. Confirm that the TV supports the desired eARC, 4K, HDR, and refresh-rate features, and that the chosen connection path will not reduce gaming performance.
  6. Calibrate and test dialogue. Play a dialogue-heavy scene before judging bass. Excess bass can mask voices, and a system that sounds impressive with explosions may still need its center-channel or bass level adjusted for everyday television.

Strong alternatives not included in the five

The Sonos Arc Ultra with Sub 4 remains a strong premium alternative for music-focused buyers. SoundGuys names the combination its best soundbar-with-subwoofer setup. It is not included in the primary five because this list follows RTINGS’ current category lineup and gives more space to budget and space-saving options. See SoundGuys’ soundbar recommendations for that alternative perspective.

The Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 is another premium option for buyers who prefer to start with a standalone bar and add Sony subwoofers and rear speakers later. Sony lists 13 speaker units, 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, room optimization, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced support. The subwoofer is sold separately. Details are available on Sony’s official BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 page.

How this list was selected

The performance descriptions in this article are attributed to RTINGS’ testing and to the manufacturers’ published specifications; they are not claims of hands-on testing by iTechGuides. RTINGS’ August 3, 2026 update is the primary basis for the five recommendations and says its picks were rechecked for validity and stock at that time.

Retail prices, discounts, inventory, and regional availability can change. Treat any retailer listing or price shown elsewhere as time-sensitive and verify it immediately before purchase. Product availability may also differ by country, so the specifications and model names should be checked against the local manufacturer page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are soundbars with a separate subwoofer better than soundbars with built-in bass?

Usually, a separate subwoofer produces deeper and more powerful bass because it has a larger dedicated enclosure and can be positioned independently. A built-in-subwoofer bar such as the Klipsch Flexus Core 300 is easier to place and can perform very well, but it is a space-saving compromise rather than a full replacement for a large external subwoofer in a large room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which soundbar here is best if I do not have room for a subwoofer?

The Klipsch Flexus Core 300 is the best fit because its subwoofer drivers are built into the bar. It does not include a wireless external subwoofer, and it will not create the same surround field as a complete system with rear speakers, but it avoids placing a separate bass cabinet on the floor.

Are the JBL Bar 1000MK2 rear speakers completely wireless?

The JBL rear speakers are detachable, battery-powered, and wirelessly connected for flexible placement. They still need charging, while the main bar and subwoofer need power. The system is therefore convenient and cable-light, not entirely free of cables.

Do I need a Samsung TV to use the Samsung HW-Q990F?

No. The soundbar can be used with other compatible TVs. A compatible Samsung TV is only relevant if you want features such as Q-Symphony, and Samsung says compatibility depends on particular TV generations and models.

Which model is the best choice for 4K/120Hz gaming?

The Samsung HW-Q990F lists 4K/120Hz passthrough in its specification sheet. RTINGS notes that the JBL Bar 1000MK2 lacks HDMI 2.1 passthrough, so high-refresh-rate consoles and PCs should generally connect directly to a compatible TV, with audio returned through eARC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Samsung HW-Q990F if you want the most complete home-theater package and have room for all of its speakers. Choose the JBL Bar 1000MK2 when detachable rear speakers are worth prioritizing. The Hisense AX5140Q is the budget Atmos pick, the Vizio SV510X-0806 is the cheapest practical surround option, and the Klipsch Flexus Core 300 is the right answer when strong bass must fit into one soundbar instead of a separate subwoofer.
