The 5 best free endpoint protection solutions are Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Avast One Essential or Avast Free Antivirus, Bitdefender Antivirus Free, AVG AntiVirus Free, and Avira Free Security. For most supported Windows PCs, Microsoft Defender is the best default; Avast offers the most free extras, Bitdefender the least clutter, AVG a feature-rich Avast-family alternative, and Avira privacy-oriented tools.

This is a Windows consumer and very-small-office antivirus comparison, not a ranking of full enterprise EDR or XDR platforms. Free antivirus can provide real-time malware scanning and some web protection, but it generally does not include centralized administration, threat hunting, incident response, organization-wide policies, or managed endpoint detection and response.

The recommendations and test references below use information available as of August 16, 2026. Product names, free-tier features, supported Windows versions, and availability can vary by country and may change after publication.

Key takeaways

  • Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the best default for most supported Windows users because it is built into Windows, requires no separate installation, and scored 17.5/18 in AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 consumer test.
  • Avast Free Antivirus scored 18/18 in AV-TEST’s June 2026 test and offers a broad free feature set, including real-time protection, web protection, and Wi-Fi security scanning.
  • Bitdefender Antivirus Free is the best minimalist alternative, but current independent test scores cited for Bitdefender come from paid editions rather than necessarily from the free edition.
  • AVG AntiVirus Free also scored 18/18 in AV-TEST’s June 2026 test, but AV-Comparatives identifies AVG’s scan engine as Avast’s, so AVG and Avast are not completely independent detection-engine choices.
  • Free consumer antivirus is not the same as business endpoint protection: organizations needing central management, EDR investigation, remote isolation, or compliance reporting need a business product.

What are the best free endpoint protection solutions?

The best free endpoint protection solution for most Windows users is Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Microsoft Defender is already included with supported Windows installations and provides a sensible “set it and forget it” baseline without another vendor’s installer, account, renewal, or promotional interface.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The other four recommendations are useful when the reader has a specific preference:

  1. Microsoft Defender Antivirus: best default choice for most Windows users.
  2. Avast One Essential or Avast Free Antivirus: best free feature set.
  3. Bitdefender Antivirus Free: best minimalist alternative.
  4. AVG AntiVirus Free: best feature-rich Avast-family alternative.
  5. Avira Free Security: best for privacy and utility extras.

“Best” here means best fit for a particular user, not proof that one product blocks every threat or wins every independent test. The ranking considers free-edition availability, real-time protection, independent evidence, usability, system impact, web features, commercial behavior, and the distinction between consumer antivirus and business endpoint security.

Quick comparison of the five free products

Product Best for Free real-time protection Primary scope Latest test signal Main drawback
Microsoft Defender Antivirus Most Windows users Yes Windows AV-TEST June 2026: 17.5/18 Fewer visible extras and more reliance on Windows integration
Avast One Essential / Avast Free Antivirus Free features and visible security tools Yes Windows; other platforms have different features and availability AV-TEST June 2026: 18/18 for Avast Free Antivirus Upselling, notifications, and edition confusion
Bitdefender Antivirus Free Minimalism and simple core protection Yes Windows according to the free product page Current cited lab results use Bitdefender Total Security, not necessarily the free edition Fewer free extras and possible upgrade prompts
AVG AntiVirus Free Web, email, and Wi-Fi features Yes Windows; other platforms have different features and availability AV-TEST June 2026: 18/18 for AVG Antivirus Free Uses the Avast scan engine according to AV-Comparatives
Avira Free Security Privacy and system-utility extras Yes, subject to the current free edition Verify current edition and platform details before installation AV-TEST June 2026: 16.5/18 for Avira Internet Security Edition-specific evidence and a lower performance score

How were these free endpoint protection solutions selected?

The comparison uses the latest research cutoff of August 16, 2026, with preference given to AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives rather than vendor marketing. The most important distinction is whether an independent lab tested the exact free edition being recommended.

AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 consumer test scores protection, performance, and usability from 0 to 6 each. AV-TEST’s TOP PRODUCT designation begins at 17.5 points. The test table identifies versions including Avast Free Antivirus 26.4/26.5, AVG Antivirus Free 26.4/26.5, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0, Avira Internet Security 1.1, and Microsoft Defender Antivirus 4.18.

AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test uses a different methodology and product set. AV-Comparatives also publishes product and feature information, so test results from the two laboratories should not be treated as interchangeable scores.

A perfect score for a paid edition does not automatically prove that the vendor’s free edition is identical. Bitdefender’s cited 18/18 result is for Total Security, and Avira’s cited result is for Internet Security. Avast and AVG were listed as free products in the AV-TEST consumer test, making those particular scores directly relevant to those editions.

1. Why is Microsoft Defender Antivirus the best default?

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the best default for most users with a supported, fully updated Windows PC. Defender is included in Windows, protects against viruses, spyware, and other malware, integrates with Windows Security, and receives security updates through Windows-managed mechanisms. Microsoft documents the included consumer protection in its Windows antivirus provider guidance.

AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 consumer test gave Microsoft Defender Antivirus 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability, totaling 17.5/18. That total reaches AV-TEST’s stated TOP PRODUCT threshold.

What does the free Defender experience include?

  • Real-time protection against malware on supported Windows installations.
  • On-demand quick and full scans.
  • Security intelligence updates.
  • Windows Security integration.
  • Microsoft Defender Offline scanning for appropriate recovery situations.

Defender is particularly suitable for a home user, student, freelancer, or very small office that wants protection without creating another account or managing another security dashboard.

What are Microsoft Defender’s limitations?

Defender is Windows-centric, and some web and phishing protections depend on Microsoft’s browser and Windows integration. Advanced ransomware controls and hardening settings can also be confusing for nontechnical users. Defender does not make a Windows PC immune to phishing, stolen passwords, malicious browser extensions, software vulnerabilities, or social engineering.

Microsoft’s consumer Defender Antivirus should not be confused with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint or Defender for Business. Microsoft describes the latter products as business security platforms with capabilities such as centralized management and endpoint detection and response. The free consumer product does not provide the same business console, investigation workflow, organization-wide policy controls, or automated response.

Choose Defender if: you want no installation, no subscription renewal, no third-party security suite, and dependable baseline protection for one or more supported Windows PCs.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

2. Is Avast One Essential the best free antivirus for features?

Avast One Essential or Avast Free Antivirus is the best choice when free features matter more than a quiet interface. Avast’s current consumer presentation varies by market: some users see Avast One Essential, while independent tests may list Avast Free Antivirus or Avast One Free Antivirus. Check the exact product name and edition shown by the installer before accepting the default options.

Avast’s official Windows 11 product information lists free anti-malware protection, malicious-website protection, and Wi-Fi security scanning. The free product is intended to provide real-time antivirus and additional visible security utilities.

AV-TEST’s June 2026 consumer test gave Avast Free Antivirus 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability, totaling 18/18. AV-TEST’s result is for the free product named in the test, rather than a paid Avast business edition. AV-Comparatives also included Avast One Free Antivirus in its February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are Avast’s trade-offs?

Avast provides more components and notifications than Defender or Bitdefender, which can mean more upgrade prompts and interface clutter. Avast’s free consumer product should not be represented as equivalent to Avast Ultimate Business Security or another managed business endpoint platform.

Avast’s own product-page claims are vendor statements, not a substitute for independent laboratory results. The independent 18/18 score is the stronger evidence for the specific Avast Free Antivirus edition listed by AV-TEST.

Choose Avast if: you want free web, network, and security utilities presented prominently and you are comfortable reviewing optional offers during setup.

3. Is Bitdefender Antivirus Free the best minimalist option?

Bitdefender Antivirus Free is the best minimalist alternative for Windows users who want core antivirus protection without a large suite of utilities. Bitdefender positions the free product around essential protection and a low-clutter experience rather than VPN, cleanup, password-management, or broad privacy features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bitdefender states on its official free antivirus page that Antivirus Free for Windows provides ongoing access without a validity due date. The same page presents the product as Windows-focused and centered on core protection.

What does independent testing show for Bitdefender?

AV-TEST’s June 2026 test gave Bitdefender Total Security 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability, totaling 18/18. AV-Comparatives’ 2026 consumer testing also included Bitdefender Total Security.

Those results support the strength of Bitdefender’s tested technology, but they do not prove that Bitdefender Antivirus Free itself received 18/18. The free edition and the paid Total Security edition must be named separately because paid products can contain different features, settings, and test configurations.

What are Bitdefender Free’s limitations?

The free edition is Windows-only according to Bitdefender’s product information and has fewer extras than Avast or AVG. Users wanting VPN access, password management, parental controls, or multi-platform coverage may encounter paid upgrade prompts. The minimalist design is an advantage for users who want simplicity, but a disadvantage for users who want built-in privacy and network utilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Bitdefender Free if: you want a simple Windows antivirus and prefer fewer visible tools over a larger free security suite.

  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

4. Is AVG AntiVirus Free a good Avast alternative?

AVG AntiVirus Free is a capable feature-rich alternative with real-time antivirus, web, email, and Wi-Fi-related features. AVG’s free antivirus information and Windows 11 product page describe malware protection alongside web and email shields and Wi-Fi security scanning.

AV-TEST’s June 2026 consumer test gave AVG Antivirus Free 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability, totaling 18/18. AV-Comparatives also included AVG AntiVirus Free in its February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test.

Does AVG use the same engine as Avast?

AVG and Avast should not be treated as completely independent detection-engine choices. AV-Comparatives’ December 2025 consumer summary identifies AVG Free Antivirus as using the Avast scan engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AVG can still differ from Avast in interface, defaults, bundled features, notifications, and commercial messaging. However, a reader choosing between AVG and Avast is largely choosing between products in the same vendor family rather than two unrelated malware-detection technologies.

What are AVG’s trade-offs?

AVG may show more upgrade prompts and bundled features than Defender. AVG’s own comparative claims should be treated as vendor marketing, while the AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives results provide independent evidence. AVG is a preference-level alternative to Avast, not necessarily a fundamentally different protection engine.

Choose AVG if: you prefer AVG’s interface and want visible web, email, and Wi-Fi controls while remaining within the Avast-family product ecosystem.

5. Is Avira Free Security worth using?

Avira Free Security is a reasonable alternative for users who value privacy and system-utility extras, but its current edition-specific evidence is less direct than the evidence for Defender, Avast, or AVG. Avira maintains a free Windows security offering, and its free Windows product page should be checked before publication for current edition, operating-system, and feature details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AV-TEST’s June 2026 consumer test listed Avira Internet Security for Windows 1.1 with 6/6 for protection, 4.5/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability, totaling 16.5/18. The result indicates strong protection and usability but a lower performance score than the leading products in the same test.

Avira Internet Security is a paid edition, so the result must not be presented as a score for Avira Free Security. AV-Comparatives’ December 2025 consumer summary lists Avira Free Security as a free Windows product, but free-tier features and current platform details should be manually rechecked because the product page was not fetchable during research.

What are Avira’s trade-offs?

Avira’s free tier may restrict or cap privacy, VPN, cleanup, and optimization tools. Users who want the least resource impact or the clearest free-edition test evidence may prefer Defender or Bitdefender. Users who specifically want privacy-oriented extras may find Avira more attractive despite the uncertainty around edition-specific testing.

Choose Avira if: privacy and utility features are more important to you than having the strongest directly comparable free-edition test record.

What does “endpoint protection” mean for a home user?

An endpoint is a device such as a desktop PC, laptop, phone, or server. In this article, endpoint protection means free consumer antivirus for Windows PCs, not a complete security operations platform.

Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue
  • Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
Free consumer antivirus generally provides Business endpoint protection may additionally provide
Real-time file scanning Centralized administration
On-demand malware scans Device inventory and organization-wide policies
Malware and potentially unwanted application detection EDR telemetry and threat hunting
Some download, browser, email, or phishing protection Automated investigation, remediation, and remote isolation
Quarantine and basic recovery controls Application control, attack-surface reduction, SIEM, identity, and ticketing integrations

Free antivirus can be entirely appropriate for a home PC or a very small office with no centralized-management requirement. Free antivirus is a poor substitute for managed endpoint protection when a business needs remote response, role-based administration, compliance records, or an investigation trail.

For context, AV-TEST’s April 2026 business endpoint test evaluated business products such as Microsoft Defender Antivirus Enterprise, Avast Ultimate Business Security, and Sophos Intercept X Advanced. Those products are not free consumer recommendations and should not be conflated with the five products in this ranking.

Is Microsoft Defender enough for a Windows PC?

Microsoft Defender is usually enough for a supported, fully updated Windows PC when the user also practices basic account, browser, and backup security. Defender is not a guarantee against every threat, and no antivirus can replace secure behavior and recovery planning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows and application updates, a password manager, multifactor authentication, careful browser habits, and offline or versioned backups. Antivirus may not stop a convincing phishing page, a malicious browser extension, a stolen password, an approved malicious MFA prompt, or social engineering.

Ransomware protection also requires recovery preparation. Keep at least one backup disconnected from the PC, restrict unnecessary write access where practical, handle Office macros and scripts carefully, and test that files can actually be restored. Antivirus detection is not the same as ransomware rollback or guaranteed recovery.

Can two free antivirus programs run at the same time?

Do not run two full real-time antivirus engines simultaneously. Microsoft warns that installing another antimalware program can turn Defender off and that running two full products at once can cause conflicts, performance problems, or unreliable protection. Microsoft’s guidance is available in its consumer antivirus provider documentation.

When a third-party antivirus registers as active, Windows normally places Defender into a non-primary operating mode. The safe approach is to choose one product for real-time protection and verify the active provider in Windows Security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A second product can sometimes be used as an on-demand scanner if its real-time protection is disabled. Before relying on a Malwarebytes-style second-opinion configuration, check the product’s current licensing and real-time protection behavior because those details can change.

Are free antivirus products really free?

Core free editions generally do not require a subscription payment, but vendors commonly monetize free users through upgrade prompts and paid add-ons. Optional paid features can include VPN access, password managers, cleanup tools, identity monitoring, privacy controls, multi-device coverage, and advanced ransomware protection.

“Free forever” should not be assumed unless the vendor explicitly says so. Bitdefender currently states that its free Windows protection has no validity due date. Other products may change their free-tier limits, account requirements, promotional messages, or platform availability.

During installation, select the free edition deliberately, read each optional offer, and avoid entering payment details for a premium trial unless a paid trial is actually intended. A trial that later converts to a subscription is not the same as free antivirus.

Which free endpoint protection should you choose?

Your priority Recommended choice Why
No installation, account, or extra interface Microsoft Defender Already included with supported Windows installations and integrated with Windows Security
Most visible free web and network features Avast One Essential / Avast Free Antivirus Offers real-time protection, malicious-website protection, and Wi-Fi security scanning
Minimal interface and core antivirus Bitdefender Antivirus Free Windows-focused and designed around essential protection
Web, email, and Wi-Fi controls in the AVG interface AVG AntiVirus Free Feature-rich free product, with the caveat that its scan engine is identified as Avast’s
Privacy and maintenance extras Avira Free Security Offers a broader consumer-security direction, although current free-edition details need verification

For most people, the practical decision is not “which antivirus wins absolutely?” The practical decision is whether the user wants Defender’s quiet integration, Avast’s larger free feature set, Bitdefender’s minimalism, AVG’s familiar controls, or Avira’s privacy-oriented utilities.

How do you install and verify a free antivirus safely?

Checking Microsoft Defender

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Confirm that real-time protection and security intelligence updates are active.
  4. Select Quick scan for a routine check.
  5. Use Full scan for a broader scan or Microsoft Defender Offline when an offline check is appropriate.
  6. Optionally open PowerShell and run:
Get-MpComputerStatus

Microsoft documents Get-MpComputerStatus and explains that AMRunningMode reports whether Defender is running normally, passively, or in another operating mode in its Defender Antivirus documentation.

Installing Avast, Bitdefender, AVG, or Avira

  1. Download the installer only from the vendor’s official website.
  2. Remove or deactivate an existing third-party antivirus before installing the replacement.
  3. Confirm that the installer is offering the free edition rather than a time-limited premium trial.
  4. Decline optional software and paid upgrades that are not wanted.
  5. Complete installation and allow the product to update.
  6. Confirm that real-time protection is enabled.
  7. Run a quick scan.
  8. Open Windows Security and verify which antivirus is registered as active.
  9. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  10. Do not install a second real-time antivirus.

What should you do if installation fails?

  • Use the previous antivirus vendor’s official removal tool, then reboot.
  • Install all available Windows updates and check that the Windows edition is supported.
  • Temporarily remove incompatible endpoint, VPN, or system-tuning software.
  • If malware is suspected, use Safe Mode or an offline rescue scanner instead of repeatedly installing security products over a compromised system.
  • If the device shows signs of persistent compromise, restore from a known-good backup and change important passwords from a clean device.

When should a small business upgrade from free antivirus?

A small business should consider managed endpoint protection when it needs central reporting, remote isolation, EDR investigation, organization-wide policy enforcement, device inventory, compliance records, role-based administration, or managed response.

Microsoft Defender for Business and Microsoft 365 Business Premium are logical upgrade paths for organizations already using Microsoft 365 and Windows. Microsoft presents standalone Defender pricing and Microsoft 365 business plans, including a Business Premium trial, but prices vary by plan, billing term, geography, and sales channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bitdefender’s consumer paid plans and GravityZone serve different audiences: paid consumer plans add features and device coverage, while GravityZone is the business-management path. Avast offers paid consumer products and business endpoint protection. AVG Internet Security is a paid expansion for existing AVG users, while Avira Prime is the broader consumer privacy-and-security bundle. Sophos Intercept X Advanced is an organization-focused product, not a free consumer recommendation.

Do not publish a current price for these paid products without checking the live official pricing or checkout page for the target country and billing term. A paid trial is also not a free endpoint solution.

What free antivirus cannot replace

  • Multifactor authentication: reduces the damage caused by stolen or guessed passwords.
  • A password manager: helps create unique passwords and reduces password reuse.
  • Software updates: close vulnerabilities that antivirus may not be able to prevent attackers from exploiting.
  • Backups: provide recovery from ransomware, accidental deletion, disk failure, and account compromise.
  • Browser caution: helps prevent credential theft through fake login pages and malicious extensions.
  • Business controls: central policy, reporting, investigation, and response are outside the normal free consumer tier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Microsoft Defender enough for most Windows users?

Yes. Microsoft Defender is usually enough for a supported, fully updated Windows PC when the user also uses multifactor authentication, unique passwords, careful browsing, current software, and offline or versioned backups. Microsoft Defender does not guarantee protection against phishing, stolen credentials, malicious extensions, or social engineering.

Can I use two free antivirus programs on one computer?

Do not run two full real-time antivirus products at the same time. Choose one active antivirus; a second product may be usable as an on-demand scanner only when its real-time protection is disabled and its current licensing behavior permits that configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does free antivirus protect Macs and phones too?

Not necessarily. This comparison is Windows-focused. Avast, AVG, and some other vendors offer products for additional platforms, but features and free availability differ by operating system, country, and edition. Bitdefender Antivirus Free is Windows-focused according to Bitdefender’s product page.

Is free endpoint protection suitable for a business?

Free consumer antivirus can suit a very small office with a few unmanaged Windows PCs, but it is not suitable when the organization needs central reporting, remote isolation, EDR investigation, role-based administration, compliance records, or managed response. Those requirements call for a business endpoint product.

Does antivirus stop phishing and account theft?

Antivirus can block some malicious websites, downloads, and files, but antivirus cannot reliably prevent users from entering credentials into convincing fake websites, approving malicious MFA prompts, reusing passwords, or being manipulated by social engineering. Multifactor authentication, a password manager, browser hygiene, and user caution remain necessary.

The Bottom Line

For most supported Windows PCs, keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus and spend your effort on updates, multifactor authentication, unique passwords, and tested backups. Choose Avast when free web and Wi-Fi features matter, Bitdefender when a minimalist interface matters, AVG when you prefer its feature-rich Avast-family experience, and Avira when privacy and utility extras are the priority. Install only one real-time antivirus, and move to managed business endpoint protection when central administration or incident response becomes necessary.
